INSANITY vs P90X: A Comparison for Women by a Woman

insanity-vs-p90x
A guide to choosing between two of the top at home workout programs of all time.

The question I kept on asking myself before trying to decide between the INSANITY and P90X workout programs was, “oh my gosh, when did I get so fat?!” I knew it made my heart race to walk up a few flights of stairs, but when did I gain nearly thirty pounds?!

Yes, I was over 150 lbs when I made the decision to get back in shape again, so I wouldn’t be self-conscious about getting in a bathing suit. This is when I began comparing INSANITY vs P90X. I saw enough of the infomercials on TV, so I was intrigued.

As a woman, my goals were to lose weight and tone up without getting a professional bodybuilder look. Unfortunately, most of the real reviews I was able to find online about either program were written by men. My problem with that was men lose fat quicker than women, and men tend to like different types of workouts than women.

Anyways, below is my comparison of the top two at-home workout programs from a woman’s perspective.

The Two Key Differences Between INSANITY and P90X

If I were to answer the questions, “What is P90X?” and “What is INSANITY?” in one sentence answers, this is what I would say this:

INSANITY is a 60-day intense workout program that is primarily a weight loss program where the workouts are performed 6 times a week and are 30-45 minute in length.

P90X is a 90-day total body workout program that consists of weight training workouts, cardiovascular exercise, and Yoga to help you not only lose weight, but also build lean muscle.

INSANITY vs P90X Comparison Chart

Being an art major(grad), I have always found it easier to take in information when presented visually, so  I figured my chart comparing INSANITY vs P90X would be an easy way for you to see key differences between the programs and which is better at achieving which result:

What Are the P90X and INSANITY Workouts Like?

The INSANITY workout program is based on something known as “Max Interval Training”, which is long-bursts of full blown cardiovascular exercise followed by shorter and lower intensity intervals of cardiovascular exercise. All of the INSANITY workouts will get your heart rate up and leave you pretty much drenched in sweat.

P90X bases its workouts around a training principle known as “muscle confusion”. The theory behind this principle is that, when you change up exercise order, workout order and even your diet, you don’t allow the body enough time to adapt to the training. This keeps you always moving forward with your health and fitness and not plateauing.

How the Workouts are Different

INSANITY workouts are high-intensity cardiovacular workouts that are not dance orienteted. You will be left in a puddle of sweat after these workouts from the plyometric moves that they incorporate with other physically demanding body weight only movements. Insanity workouts are done 6 times a week with no weights.

P90X workouts are also done six times a week. The program features three days of weight training, a plyometric workout, Kenpo(kickboxing) workout, and sweat inducing Yoga workout. The workouts are cycled in three week phases so you will not get bored with the workouts.

How the Diets Differ

The INSANITY diet plan is an easy-to-follow diet where you eat 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. This diet is well-balanced and easy to stick with. Everything is detailed in the INSANITY diet plan, which includes a step-by-step guide to calculating your calories and a bunch of easy-to-follow recipes that won’t keep you in the kitchen all day.

The P90X diet is more complicated than the INSANITY diet. The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase nutrition plan. In phase 1 of the P90X diet, which is called the Fat-Shredder phase, you eat a diet high in protein, low in fat, and low in carbohydrates. During the first phase of the P90X diet, people often notice significant loss of energy from the lower carbohydrates, but also significant weight loss. The second phase of the P90X diet is called the Energy Booster and is similar to the Insanity diet of 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. The third phase of the P90X diet is called the Endurance Maximizer and is nicknamed an athletic diet for this reason: unless you have extremely low body-fat levels, you should avoid this phase of the diet entirely and stick to the Energy Booster phase or you’ll likely add unwanted body fat.

What Equipment You Need for P90X or INSANITY

p90x-and-insanity-equipment
At the minimum you would need a resistance band to do the P90X workouts. Insanity requires no equipment, it use only bodyweight based exercises.

What I like most about the INSANITY workout program is the fact that it requires no workout equipment. This means I can just move my coffee table to the side, throw in a DVD, and start working out it minutes. You may want to add a heart-rate monitor to your workouts to make sure you stay in your target heart range.

On the other end of the spectrum, P90X  requires lots of equipment if you want to get the most out of the program. While it is recommended you have at least resistance bands and a yoga mat to do P90X, you will really need a few more pieces of equipment. Pull-ups and chin-up variations are major exercises in P90X, which means you’ll need a chin-up bar, plus likely a chair to help give you a boost until you’re strong enough. You’ll also want dumbbells up to thirty pounds, push-up bars, a yoga block, and a heart rate monitor is always very handy to have. The only good thing is that weights up to thirty pounds, yoga mat and heart rate monitor are something you will always be able to use down the road, so think of them as more of an investment in your health overall.

P90X vs  INSANITY  – Which Program is Harder?

For one reason or another, people always want to know which program is harder when comparing Insanity to P9oX. I can tell you this: both programs are extremely difficult, and both programs if followed properly are extremely rewarding. They will whip you into shape in 60 or 90 days and start you on track to a new and healthier lifestyle. However after trying both programs, I believe INSANITY is the harder of the two programs if you were to go all out with either.

Price Point – Where to Get p90X or INSANITY for the Lowest Prices

The good news is you do not have to let price be the deciding factor when choosing between INSANITY and P90X. Why? Because they both cost the same!

The lowest price for INSANITY and P90X is $119.88 plus shipping. But, if you order through a Team Beachbody store, you get free bonus workouts that are not available anywhere else.

If you order P90X through the link below, you get two free bonus workouts: Fountain of Youth Yoga and Mammoth UML, which is an upper body workout. And, as of writing this, you will also receive P90X Plus (4 DVDs – 5 workouts) for free, which is a $130 value alone.

Ordering INSANITY through the link below will also get you a free bonus workout called the Fast and Furious workout. I love this workout, and the fact it is only 20-minutes long makes an awesome addition to my workout line-up…especially on those days when I am short on time.

P90X vs INSANITY Results

INSANITY and P90X will undoubtedly get you real results. Both programs will help you lose weight, tone-up, and improve your cardiovascular health.

  • For weight loss, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.
  • For toning up, I would give P90X five stars and INSANITY four stars.
  • For cardiovascular health, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.

The Simple Way to Decide

If I had to put it into simplest terms, if you like weight training, lots of pull-ups and push-ups then P90X is for you. If you do not like weight training and love high-intensity cardio INSANITY is your better option.

  1. Hi Bethany,
I’m a college student, 22 years old, I’m 5 feet 9 inches tall and 170 pounds. This puts my BMI right off the edge into overweight. I had spent my whole life being rail thin compared my height and weighed in at 127 pounds before starting college. Over the years I have gained this weight and well let’s just say I’m not enjoying it and it has taken a toll on my self esteem, I really want to lose weight and hopefully be anywhere between 130-135 pounds again. Due to my height I’m not too concerned about being any lower than 130 because my fat distributes evenly at least. I’d say I’m in a healthy enough state that I can keep up with hard workouts as when I workout and eat right I tend to drop weight fast. My main issue is time and school taking up a lot of my day leaving me lazy for the rest of it. I also would really like to be toned in the way that you can see slight muscle definition, I have no need to be super muscly. I would also like to complete my 35-40 pound weight loss within 3 months if at all possible. Which workout do you think would be best for me? PS I live in an apartment with a gym if that helps with the decision.

    1. Hi Ray, Both of these programs are pretty intense and for people who have completed another program or are at an intermediate/advanced level. I would suggest looking at more of a beginner program like 21 Day Fix, T25, or P90 that focuses on building a solid foundation. I have reviews for most of these programs on my site if you select the category drop down menu were you can find a lot of info. And do not be afraid to take advantage of the Beachbody On Demand 14-day membership trial(link at the bottom of the blog post) to see which program workouts you like best and would stick with. Bethany

  2. As a woman who lifts heavy weights regularly, I was excited to find the first review of Insanity v P90X written by a woman for women. However, I was immediately turned off by your reference to the “icky” bodybuilder body. While I understand if having defined muscle is not your cup of tea, you may want to reconsider your word choices in order to not alienate readers just looking for an honest review.

    1. Hi Amy, I have reworded the post. I was just trying to share that my goal was not to build the body of Mr. or Ms. Olympia, which you are not going to do naturally with either of these two programs. Sometimes words written don’t portray what I was trying to get across or portray in my mind or what I think people would think and I apologize if I offended you or anyone else. I loved defined muscles on men or women!

  3. Hi. I am 37 ,157 cm and 55kg. BMI 22.3. I am in quite ok form just that I have some belly fat to get rid off. Which program do you think will be best for me? Many thanks. Z

    1. Hi Zita, It depends, if you are looking at a cardio/bodyweight only program then Insanity. But, if you want to incorporate traditional strength training then P90X would be a better option. You can always try both(and all other bEachbody programs) with the 14-day streaming trial to Beachbody On Demand, there is a link in the post before deciding which is right for you. Bethany

  4. Hi Bethany,

Thank you for your detailed article. I’m 36 years old, 165 lbs, and 5’2″. I lost about 55 pounds over the past 5 months because I had a gastric bypass surgery done. I am losing weight, but I’m scared of ending up with a ton of saggy loose skin. To be honest, I haven’t been working out much lately. I do some yoga, but that’s about it. About 10 years ago, I used to be a gym rat, going to the gym 4 to 6 times a week, anywhere from 1 to 3 hours per session, doing both cardio and strength training. So I know I am capable let of it, but I have a hard time staying focused and dedicated. Which program do you think would be best for me? Thanks!

    1. Hi Sabrina, With you just getting back into it and all, I would recommend checking out T25. It is 25 minutes, 5 day a week workout program from Shaun T. A good mixture of cardio and strength training makes this workout one of the best programs if you have been out the game for a while. I also have support groups via Facebook or the Beachbody Challenge tracker app if you are looking for some extra accountability, you can contact me via the contact form in the website header tab to learn more. 5. Hi Bethany !
I just want to say I love all the comments and support that I am seeing on your page. I just wanted to let you know that I will be starting p90x today as well as my husband. I am 23 currently 5’2 and weigh 186 , I use to weigh 198 about 6 months ago and since then am determined to keep going. I want to lose several more pounds I would like to get down to 130. . This time around I am committed I want to transform I have never been through a transformation in where I look different and feel great what would you recommend. should I begin with p90x?

    1. Hi Jackeline, I would start with either P90X3 or P90 then move up to the original P90X workouts. The original P90X is a pretty hardcore workout program that can easily lead to overtraining especially when just starting out. Since the new releases in the P90X series I suggest people start with one of these before the original. I do plan to cover them more in depth on the blog in the future. Bethany

  6. I gave birth a little over a year ago and Im still holding onto 40lbs of my pregnancy weight. I would like to thin out/tone up plus lose this awful spare tire/muffin top. Im a beginner when it comes to working out. Which program will help me lose weight in my midsection the best? Also I dont want to get overly muscular/bulky anything I need to watch out for?

    1. Hi Katrina, You can’t spot reduce weight loss, you’ll lose weight from everywhere no matter what program you do. I would suggest a beginners program like T25 or the 21 Day Fix. Insanity and P90X are more for people who have finished a Beachbody program and are pretty advanced. And, you don’t really have to worry about getting to muscular as a woman our testosterone levels are so much lower it is extremely difficult to get bulky muscles. Bethany

  7. Candice Carrington

    Hi Bethany,

I just turned 22 I am currently 5’4 and 175 pounds. I have struggled with loosing weight and then gaining weight all the weight back. I want to lose weight while also being toned. I ultimately want toned legs, small waist and to lift my butt. I’m unsure if I want to get insanity or p90x? I tried 21 day fix and it did tone my body, but not to the extent that I wanted it too. I’m not getting any younger and I want to have that dream body and also be healthy. I’m also wondering between p90x or insanity, which one is the easiest diet plan to follow?

    1. Hi Candice, Either program works. Just need to stick with a healthy diet and exercise until you reach your goals and then continue to maintain that lifestyle.. P90X includes weights and a lot more strength training than Insanity, but if you just like cardio workouts then Insanity would be a better workout program to follow. Both diets are pretty similar, you could follow the Fix diet plan also as it is in my opinion a more well rounded diet. Bethany

  8. Hi Bethany!

This article was super helpful. I’m almost 6 feet tall and fluctuating between 160 and 165 pounds. I used to be 140 and I’d love to get back to that, but I care more about being able to do any physical activity required of me. My biggest goal is to decrease my waist size back down and attain visible abs. Which program do you think would be best for me?

    1. Hi Jessica, Honestly, either program would help you reach your goals. In cases like this, I like to say if you want strength training and cardio, try P90C. If you would rather hardecore cardio/bodyweight only, then Insanity. Bethany

  9. Helloo Bethany ,
I’m 16 years old, height 5’2 and weigh 138 pounds. I want to lose about 15 pounds and get toned not super muscular. I would like to have a flat stomach and a firm butt and legs. I have 34.2% of body fat. I know that beach body doesn’t recommend these workouts for minors but I prefer exercising at home rather that at a gym.Which would you recommend

    1. Hi Sofia, Yes as a minor, you need to talk to your parents/guardians and consulting with a doctor would be best.

  10. Hey Bethany ,
I’m 18 years old, height 5’2 and weigh 151 pounds. I want to lose about 25 pounds and get toned not super muscular. I would like to have toned butt , legs and stomach. As for my arms, I would like a little definition of muscle because I have such flappy arms. Honestly I’m not much of a exercise person in general but I would like to make a change towards a healthier lifestyle. Which of the two programs do you recommend?

  11. Hi,
I used to play hardcore basketball, but I haven’t for more than a year. I got pudgy and want to regain my hollow cheeks and lean, skinny figure. I guess I want a “ballerina-ish” body. Not too muscular, but to where I look thin. I like p90x, the only problem is equipment. My dad used to do p90x and said that the workouts that included equipment could be substituted. Anyways, I would like your opinion.

    1. Hi Sussana, I think the minimal equipment you would need for P90X is a resistance band. Not sure you could really substitute the workouts that use equipment since that would be about half of the workouts.

  12. Hey Bethany!
Loved your article so much. It’s been so stressful trying to find a good workout that fits for women. I was always so intimidated by P90X, because even on their website – it looks like it gears more towards men.
I am 20 years old, 5’1″, and relatively new a healthy gym lifestyle. I used to dabble in sports in high school, but never had to stress too much about dieting and following a workout schedule. However, since college, I’ve gained a lot of weight and seen my naturally petite body get worse and worse. I was really hoping to get a bikini body and feel better about my health by the summer. In my experience at the gym, I tend to enjoy the actual machines more vs. cardio workouts – I absolutely hate running. What would you recommend?

    1. Ho Melissa, You can try them both with Beachbody on Demand to see which you like more, there is a link to trial in the article. Could also take a look at the BBL workout, I have reviewed it on my site also. Main thing is to find a program you like and are going to stick with.

  13. I am 37 years old, height 5’2, and weigh about 137. I’d like to lose about 20 more pounds and get tone, not muscular. Like to lift my flabby white girl booty and flatten stomach. I’ve recently started running and enjoy it and would like to step it all up to get in shape physically and mentally. What do you recommend insanity or p90x? I’m also single mom of 2.

    1. Hi Stephanie, Hmmm, while Insanity and P90X are both great programs, you can actually try them both with a trial to the Beachbody On Demand that I have linked to in the post. But, another program that you might want to look into is T25, there is the category drop down that you can look into this program more. I also have T25 / Running hybrid schedule that if use the search feature on this site you should be able to find that you might enjoy. Bethany

  14. I am currently doing insanity, started a couple of weeks ago. I am eating clean but not following the insanity diet. My goal is to lose weight especially in my belly area. I would also like to tone up and get abs once i reach my ideal weight. Any advice?

    1. Hi Tolu, Keep with! There is not much say, you’ll get results with dedication to your nutrition and workouts.

  15. I am 27years old. Two years ago I did P90X for a month and although I don’t have any weight problem, my muscles( especially leg muscles) grew a lot in volume. Now I’m thinking about starting Insanity, but I am afraid that it would do the same thing. Maybe I was doing something wrong? Can you give me any recommendation to improve muscle tone without gaining volume? Thanks

    1. Hi Maria, If by volume you mean larger muscles, P90X does use weight training for legs which in theory could have added some bulk to your legs. Insanity is all body weight and is pretty much strictly hardcore cardio, meaning people should not add a whole lot of muscle, rather cut and tone. If you were not doing so, be sure to measure as more muscular tone can appear bigger and in reality be smaller.

  16. ‘ Hi Bethany,

I am 35, 153 lb, 5’5″ ans size 14(wider mid-section). I have gained around 30 lbs during my twins pregnancy 4 years back. I have a wider mid-section(waist and tummy) and i don’t feel strength. I also needs to gain some muscles and endurance. I did JM and group exercise at local gym and lost 10-15 lb in 3 months but gained back in few months. I am looking for a program that will help in reducing my mid-section atleast to size6 and gain more muscles to have stronger body. Hoping to get some help from you.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Priya! I like Insanity better than P90X, but that is because I had a seriously tough time with P90X. With Insanity, I was able to tone it down to my fitness level more easily. It’s really up to you and your preference on what workout seems right for you (weights vs. body weight, equipment vs no equipment, Shaun T. vs Tony Horton, etc.), because either program will help you build endurance, lean muscle mass, and get you the body you want. Hope this helps! Bethany

  17. Hi Bethany,
    I am 49, 160 pounds and about 5’5”
I have got both Insanity and P90X programs.
My goal is to lose about 20 pounds for the beginning and then
see how I feel and maybe go for some few more pounds to lose.
I actually started already Insanity and doing it for four days,
During workout I stop some times, but keep going till the end.
Before that I was doing Cross Fit,
but had so little time, that I slept for about 5 or 5,5 hous a day.
So I decided that sleep is more important than Cross Fit and stoped going to the gym about two month ago.
I don’t feel good without exersising and gane some wait.
I feel great doing workouts, whether cardio or weight.
Someone told me, that Insanity is crazier and P90X is a bit slower.
My question is what would you suggest to continue with Insanity, even I am not able to keep up with all the workouts,
ot start on Monday, Febr, 1 with P90X and then continue with Insanity after 90 days?
    Please advise.
    Kindly,
    Lana

    1. Hi Lana, I would not say Insanity is harder than P90X, it is more cardiovascular of a program than P90X. P90X includes the weight training days, which can be just as intense, but different. If you have to rest during the Insanity workouts that is not a problem, most people need to take breaks.

      1. Hi Bethany,
thank you for your quick respond.
I actually did today both my Insanity Pure Cardio workout,
        as scheduled and
        did Fit Test for P90X.
I passed it and LOVED IT.
I think I will do one more Insanity workout to finish my week of Insanity
and will start P90X on Monday, Feb. 1 for 90 days
        and then will do Insanity.
I am feeling excited, happy and motivated.
If you want, I will keep you posted along the way.
        Lana

  18. Hi Bethany! My name is Taylor, I am about 5’5″ and I weigh around 152 pounds. I have completed both insanity and p90x over the past few years and I was wondering if you’ve heard of Kayla’s BBG workout. I am a vegan, so I was always unable to follow the meal plans for beachbody but I recently found a meal plan I can stick to. I’ve always struggled with my weight and my goal is to lose about 30 pounds. I am more of a weight lifter, but I also enjoy cardio. I am trying to decide whether to do Kayla’s or one of these programs.

    1. Hi Taylor, Just to note Beachboy’s newer programs, post Max:30 probably do account for and tell you ways to make the diet portion vegan and alternative diet friendly. Bethany

  19. Hi
I am 35 year old mother of five beautiful children. I have been athletic all my life and usually very active. Through some life changes and a new job I have now been nearly as physical as I like and it is really start to weigh me down both physically and mentally. After my last baby I lost all but 15 lbs then within the last year gained another 15 lbs and am wanting to loose 30 lbs as well as tone up and feel better overall. I am used to hard work and sweat and I am willing to put in what is necessary to make the changes. I am hoping you can give me some help because I am on the fence between P90X and Insanity. Thank you for any help that you can provide.

    1. Hi Christina, You could try the Beachbody On Demand this way you could get access to both workouts. There is a 30-day trial if you have not been a Beachbody Club member before. Bethany

  20. Hi Bethanny,
Thanks for this article very informative.
Back in June 2013 I embarked on my weightloss journey after 2 kids. By November 2014 I had lost 14kgs of the 18kgs I wanted to lose. I had lasted 9weeks of P90X. I’m not sure how much weight it helped me to lose.
So 1 year down the track Iv put on 1/2 of what I lost (due to poor eating/drinking and less exercise). I’m on week 2 of P90X but feel so run down. I enjoy weights but would probably prefer the cardio of insanity but at the same time am worried about the run down feeling.
Any tips on what you think I’d be better off doing (p90x or insanity) and do you encourage any supplements?

    1. Hi Netty, If you like P90X, Chalean Xtreme is similar but the workouts are much shorter, less than 50 minutes.IT is also on Beachbody On Demand if you want to take a look at the workouts. As far as supplements, it really depends not he individual, goals, and budget.I would avoid any sort of diet pill, but whey protein, a meal replacement shake could be things to look into. Bethany

  21. Hi Bethany,
I am 36 years old and I weigh 222 pounds. I’m 5.5 . I have struggled with my weight for 4 years now I am not very active I walk for my job all day but that’s about all the working out I do . I really need to take charge of my health and adopt and live a healthier and active lifestyle I have a little more then90 days to lose the weight, my husband will be deployed n
home in Feb . From your research and graph, I’m thinking that Insanity is my best bet for weight loss. However, I’ve heard that women should incorporate a lot more strength training in their workouts so, now I’m stuck between choosing one of the two. Also, as you can imagine, I need to lose a significant amount of weight for my height but I want to lose it gradually and healthy so that I can really stick to my new lifestyle and maintain an overall healthy weight. So, what do you think? Thanks for your input. Cheers!

    1. Hi Shannon, Strength training and cardio are both important. Insanity does not use weights, but you do use your body weight for resistance. No matter which you choose diet is going to be an important factor. Both of the programs are included in the new Beachbody On Demand area, if you wanted to sample both programs you could do that and see which you like more. Bethany

  22. Hi Bethany,

Thank you for putting all the information on this blog.

I ma 5’2″- 125 lbs. I am not looking to loose weight. My focus is to have a toned body -specifically toned abs and legs.

I am confused between Insanity an P90X.

    Can you please advise.

    Thank you
    Yas

    1. Hi Yas, Did you have any specific questions? You will tone up with either program, Insanity is more cardio while P90X mixes in three days of strength training with weights. Bethany

  23. Hi

I’ve completed both P90 X and Insanity with good results. However, last 6 months I fell out of shape and gained 28 lbs-bad diet, sitting down too much, and no working out. I need to re-boot and start over. I feel bulky because I was muscular and now it’s covered in fat. What do I do now? Insanity?

  24. Hi Bethany! This website has been super helpful so thank you for that! I’m 18 years old and a college freshman. I’ve never had weight issues until this past year. I had been able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want and not have to worry about a thing — and then I grew up. I gained around 20 pounds this past year and it’s seemed like no matter what cardio/ weight training I do, I can’t seem to lose the weight. I’m not overweight by any means, but I’m not happy with the way I look or feel whatsoever. I’ve also had a really hard time sticking to a good meal plan and staying motivated. As I said, I’m a college student so my time is limited as well. I was thinking of giving the Insanity a try, what do you think a good route for me would be? Thanks for all the help!

    1. Hi Dani, Insanity or you also may want to give a look at T25. This is another program from Shaun T, it is a good full body workout routine, plus the workouts all just 25 minutes, this might fit better into your schedule.

  25. sarah isis (@disisd)

have you done a p90x3 review? I’m doing 21dfix right now and thinking of doing the p90x3 later on. Thanks!

    1. Hi Sarah, No I have not done P90X3 workouts so I won’t review them until I have a chance to get into them. Looks better than the original though.

  26. Hi Bethany,

I had my second baby approximately ten (10) months ago after trying successfully at doing the Scarsdale Medical Diet I lost a significant amount of weight. Subsequent to that, I did the Insanity 60 Day Workout Programme and I am now back to my wedding day weight *dancing*.

My question is I am still plagued with the loose skin around the stomach area, I have started the Max 30 programme but do you think it’s enough or should something else be incorporated to assist with overall toning especially around the stomach area?

    Thanks for the review btw!!!

    1. Hi M, Time, working out and healthy eating will help the loose skin. I don’t think there is any special exercises you could do. Bethany

  27. Hi Bethany!

I really enjoyed your article – especially because most reviews I found of these programs are for men, so thank you! I am 21 years old, 5’5, and about 165 lbs. I’m at the time in my life where I am really motivated to become as fit and healthy as possible. As someone who still struggles with BED I am ready to make some changes and nourish my body (and mind) in a healthy way. I want to lose weight (around 25 lbs) but I also want to gain more muscle tone as well. I can’t decide which program would be more effective… any suggestions? Also, the only platform I have for these programs is my laptop, which does not have a CD player. Is there a way I can stream these videos online or something? Thank you!!

  28. Hi Bethany,
I am 34 years old and I weigh 285 pounds. I’m 5.4 and 3/4 tall. I have struggled with my weight since senior year in H.S. I really need to take charge of my health and adopt and live a healthier and active lifestyle. Cheers!

    1. Hello, Awesome that you have made the decision to change! Both of these programs are more geared towards the intermediates/advanced trainers. You might want to look at more of a beginner program like the 21 Day Fix. It is well rounded program that includes cardiovascular workouts and also uses weights for strength training too. And, the portion approach eating plan has been a game changer for a lot of people who have struggled with what eating healthy is about. Hope that helps, Bethany

  29. Hey Bethany,
I’m 5’1 weighing in at 233 at age 20. I’m in dire need of losing weight. I also want to tone my stomach arms and thighs. I workout here and there but have never stuck to it. AnyAny advice on which program would help me most in my situation. It would be greatly appreciated.
    -Trysh

    1. Hi Trysh, As you are starting out I would look at a couple of alternatives for these programs. One being T25 by Shaun T and the second being Power 90, it is a beginner’s P90X. I have a review of the T25 program on this site, but have not yet got into the other. Bethany

  30. Hi Beth,
I am 5’6 193 and 43 years old. Other fun stuff I am a mother of 9 and have had 5 sections. I managed to get down to 173 about a year and a half ago and was seeing some great results toning as well until planter fasciitis took me away from running last August. I am done feeling crappy about the weight gain again and want to get back on track. I am trying to decide between the two programs and welcome an opinion..
    Thanks Kim

    1. HI Kim, It depends on the planter fasciitis. You may want to look at lower impact workout like PiYo just to get back into to it. These two programs are very difficult to begin and there are better options like T25 or Power 90. Bethany

  31. I would like to try insanity but I haven’t stepped a gym for about 1year and 6 months- would be ok for beginners

    1. Hi ALex, Sounds strange, but I would look at MAX:30 before Insanity. The modifier makes it better for a beginner or even T25 to start. I have reviews on the site under the different categories. Bethany

      1. Hey Bethany I used to workout before I loved spinning class but work schedule was hard to keep gym routine. I’ve gained few pounds need to lose 15 pounds!! Am also very active!! So is best to try MAx:30, I need something that gives me results am also very strict with my eating habitats. Please help me choose correct program!! Thanks again

  32. Hi,

I’d love help deciding between P90x and T25, if you’re able to suggest one between the two!

I’m currently on week 5 of P90x lean routine, and I’m seeing great toning, but still feel like I have a bit of extra weight to lose (probably 10 pounds). I’m planning to stricter with diet. I’m wondering if being stricter with the diet should help me lose the weight in the next 10 weeks, or if I should switch to T25. Before I started P90x I’d done boxing off and on for a year, and little exercise before that.

I’m getting married in 10 weeks, so my goal is to lose the weight by then. I’m 5’7, and about 130 pounds right now. I can email over a pic of myself if that’ll help you determine more about my body type!
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Sara, Just get strict with your diet. Creating a calorie deficit of 500 calories a day will get you down to 120 in 10 weeks. Bethany

  33. Hi! Thankmyounfor this article! I have a question. I have been doing mostly Insanitynfor almost two years now. I have done an p90x/Insanity hybrid a couple of times, also. However, when I first started Insanity I went from 130 to 116 in about 4 months. I am 5’2″. I gained back up to 130 somewhere along the way. I have started Tae Kwon Do 3-4 nights a week, and feel like I still need to do Insaity to make it through those classes. However, I would like to lose back down to below 120. Is that possible with this schedule, and should I be doing more p90x instead of Insanity? My diet hasn’t been the best, but feel like if I don’t eat enough, I have no energy.

    1. Hi Summer, As long as your diet and training is creating a calorie deficit you will lose weight. If weight loss is your main goal I would stick with the Insanity workouts over P90X. Bethany

  34. Hi Bethany, when I was a teen and throughout my 20’s I was so content with my body I was a 130-135 and I’m 5″5. I had my daughter @ 27 and just starter to gain weight and couldn’t loose it now she is 6 and I just gave birth to twin boys and I feel horrible about myself. I am 50 pounds over my ideal weight. What do you recommend?

    1. Hi Laura, If you are a beginner I would check out the 21 Day Fix program. These two programs are more intermediates and advanced. Bethany

  35. Hi I am 33 and mother of 4 with a post-baby body that needs toning. My weight/BMI/body fat is in the normal range for my age and height. I started doing HIIT and Tabata workouts about 2 months ago (at gym and fitnessblender.com) 30-60 mins daily 5-6 days per week. I usually do pilates/yoga once per week. 2 weeks ago I restarted weight training 2x per week at gym with my husband (who really pushes me.) I have noticed my quads and glutes become larger and more toned – I’ve always had more of the long/lean muscle tone – so that has been a body image adjustment. I was considering the Insanity series and continuing the weight training at the gym. Would love to know your thoughts?? Thanks

    1. Hi Sarah, If you follow any of the Insanity programs as laid out you don’t need the weight training too. That would probably be to much intense exercise. I definitely put on muscle with MAC:30 and did not even touch a weight. Bethany

  36. Melissa Lamboy

Hello Bethany! My names Melissa, I’m 19 years old and over weight. I’ve been overweight since I was younger. I am currently 227 pounds, my heaviest weight was 278 and I’ve only done cardio to lose weight. I’m bored of doing just elliptical and treadmill. I want to try something new and I wanted to know if INSANITY was a good program for me. Thank you. :)

    1. Hi Melissa, I would look at Insanity MAX:30. The modifier makes that program more doable for all fitness levels. Bethany

  37. Hi Bethany!
I have already tied insanity for 30 days but I wasn’t eating right. On the bright side, I started to see my first ever 2 pack abs, I could feel them and they were shaped, but not exactly visible yet. I was also able to complete my first ever 30 day workout goal (I am known to be pretty athletic around school and in my family, but I have a few kilos that are hiding and need to be shed. I also have tried insanity before and Jillian Michaels’ workout before and Brazil Butt Lift, and a bunch more workouts… but I never make it to 30 days. I can lose motivation 2 days before the 30th) Anyway, on the dark side I wasn’t eating to plan and so didn’t lose a single pound (just toning).
Now for my decision, I was wondering if I should try insanity again but follow the plans fully, or try P90X for a change. The thing is, I really want to be able to do a pull up (at least one!) and I also want the body toning, you are probably saying that I should try P90X. I would, but the program is too long and I don’t have that time on my hands… You know getting ready for summer and going on a vacation. So I was wondering if I tried Insanity again and followed correctly, would I be able to get the same results? Oh and I should also mention my weight, height, and age… I am 158 cm tall and 74-75 kilos (I should be 58-60). The best thing about my body is no one ever knows I weigh that much, I look like a 65 (my body managed to spread the fat all around my body, especially my arms and my thighs). So what do you recommend?
    P.S.
I had an ACL reconstructive surgery last July on my knee, but I guess insanity is fine when I do its workouts except for the power jumps, I take precaution. So I was wondering if P90X has moves that would greatly affect my knee.

    1. Hi Khadija, P90X is easier on the knees in my opinion than Insanity. If you don’t have the time check out P90X3. Just be sure to get cleared by your doctor, so you knee your knee will be okay. Bethany

  38. Hey Bethany! I am an new mom. My baby is 4.5 months old and I’ve gained weight! I weigh 157 and my body fat is 20%. I want to do whatever will decrease my body fat. What do you think? Thanks! -Sascha-

  39. Hi Bethany!!i need your advice !!! I m 25yrs 5’4 137 … Lost 8 lbs in last 2months by jogging… My main comcern in my tummy and my upper back… As if all the fat is stored in these two areas.. My tummy is loose ,dropy and hanging pouch… And have fat around my shoulder blades and under arms… I really wana tone up body … And wana get abs … I wana reduce my body fat too which is around 27% i guess!!! Plz help

    1. Hi, Sounds like you are off to a great start. These programs are great because you get workouts to follow as well as a good clean diet. You can’t spot reduce fat, but you will see overall changes. Bethany

  40. Hi Bethany! I really need your advice! My name is Samantha and I’m 21years old, I’m 5″1 and weigh about 108. I’m athletic but I need help gaining muscle along with losing weight around my stomach area. I don’t know whether to purchase p90x or insanity. I go to the gym constantly but that really doesn’t push me enough. I have time and also the room for either one! I want to gain muscle in my legs and arms. And abs as well but lose some weight! It’s hard for me to gain muscle, I’m petite! Yor help would be greatly appreciated :)

    1. Hi Samantha, Either one can help you achieve your goals, but it is diet that is going to ultimately determine your results. The Beachbody on Demand feature allows you to stream either of these workouts. There is a 30-day trial offer so you can test it out. I would recommend that option and try both of them and determine which one you like more. Bethany

  41. Hi. This is a great article. I am a 43 year old mom of four kids ranging from 15 years to 1 year old. I just finished week 3 of T 25 beta. I really like the t25 program and plan to continue with Gamma. I have lost 12.8 pounds. I am also doing weight watchers online to help with food accountability.
As you can imagine with four kids time is a big issue. I used to train with weights consistently and was most happy with my body at this point in my life. I did indoor cycling at the same time.
I am still confused as to whether I should move to P90x or go to insanity. I still have a little over 20 pounds I would like to lose. P90x concerns me because I have shoulder problems and cannot do military style push-ups or even do a full girly push up and a pull up is probably going to wreck my shoulders. Can I do something instead of pull ups when that is the focus in p90x?

I hope you can reply as I see this article is a few years old.

    Thank you so much

    1. Hi Cori, There are lots of pull-ups, I mean lots in P90X. There is the option to use the band for a similar movement. I don’t recommend P90X to many people, an hour and a half of working out daily is over the top. Have you checked out INSANITY MAX:30, the workouts are only thirty minutes and the modifier makes it to me a better option than the original Insanity. Bethany

  42. Hi! I’ve already done insanity multiple rounds through and now I’m kind of at a plateau. I am mainly looking for toning up but weight loss is always a bonus. Would P90x be a right fit for me?

  43. I am training for a half-marathon and run 3-4 nights a week, usually about 8 miles at a time and sometimes a long weekend run. I just started Insanity…I lost about 30 pounds (5’4″ and went from 161 to 128). I’m fairly happy with my body now, but I’d like to add some definition.

How much should I cut back on my running so I’m not overdoing it?

    1. Hi Rebekah, Nice results! Gosh, I have no idea how much to get back your running. Long distance running is something I wish I could get into, but I always seem to injure myself or something comes up. Bethany

  44. Hi!

I’m 32, about 5’9 and around 185. I stopped excercising about a year ago and when I tried going back to the gym on July I got an achilles tendon rupture at the end of a kickboxing class :(

The doctor just released me from therapy but recommended to stick with low impact and no contact excercises or sports. Which program(s) would you recommend for me?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Martha, Both of these programs I would categorize as high-impact. I would take a look at the PiYo program, there is a review on my homepage. Bethany

  45. Hi there,

First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to publish this article. I found it very informative. I am seeking your advice as far as which program you think will be best for me. I am 5’0, 200lbs. I’m looking to lose 70lbs to start with but I’m terrified of lose skin. which program do you think would work best for me? I really like the idea of insanity becaus cardio would be more enjoyable for me but I’m afraid I will have lose skin everywhere if I do insanity. Help?

    1. Hi Nicole, The best program is one that you are going to find more enjoyable. As long as you lose 1-2 pounds a week, which is the optimal amount for everyone, you should minimize or not have any loose skin issues, that comes down to a lot to genetics and age. Bethany

  46. Gwendolyn Vargas

I have been into heavy lifting for a very long time. I want to try something different though because I’ve never been much for the cardio side and I’ve hit a plateau where I’m not seeing any more results. I want to focus more on losing weight but I don’t want to lose my strength. What are your thoughts?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Gwendolyn, P90X sounds like it is more up your alley. You’ll still get three days of strength training too, so you should not lose strength. Bethany

  47. Hello,
My name is Kayla. I am 19 years old, weigh about 150, and am 5’4. I have been involved in sports my entire life, playing soccer, basketball, fast pitch, baseball, volleyball, and currently rugby. I have never been the “skinny” or “toned” girl. I really want to get into shape and boost my self esteem, I have had body issues since I was in 5th grade. I want to work towards a flat stomach and slimming my legs down and lose weight. I have been wanting to get one of these programs for a few years now but now I’m struggling on which program I should try, P90X or Insanity. I live in a dorm, as I am a freshman, and would like to do the workouts in my room. Your recommendation would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! (:

    1. Hi Kayla, P90x would be very difficult to do effectively in a dorm room. Insanity is all bodyweight and you don’t need much space, maybe a six by six foot area, so that is what I would suggest.

  48. Hello!! I am 18 and i used to be a competitive gymnast for about 10 years. When I quit (which was about 3 years ago) I stopped working out completely. I have always wanted to get back into the shape I used to be in but I never really had the drive until now. I’ve tried the gym thing and working out in front of other people and machines aren’t really my thing. My main focus is gaining back my strength, but I also want to increase flexibility and endurance. I want something that I can continue using past the 60 or 90 day mark. Also, because I am in college, I don’t really have a lot of space to use…are both P90X and Insanity capable of being used in smaller spaces? (typical dorm room size) Thanks!!

    1. Hi Sam, P90X would be very difficult to do in a dorm. Isanity you need, I would say about a six by six space and some head room. Bethany

  49. Hi Bethany!

Firstly, thank you so much for providing this wonderful comparison!
I’m a ballet dancer and am hoping to lose some weight as I’m still carrying a few extra pounds. My main concern with either of the two is bulking up and getting unnecessarily tight muscles. As a student I don’t have a particularly large amount of time but am definitely ready to commit! In order to lose weigh and become leaner without bulking up which would be the better of the two for me? Thanks so much once again!

    1. Hi Natali, I would take a look at the PiYo program, it is to build long lean muscle, which it sounds like you want. In the category drop down on the sidebar of this site, you can find all of the articles I have written about it. Bethany

  50. First of all you are Awesome for help so many people! I am 28 years old, I am about 120 pounds. I want to become more tone as well as buff! I also want to lose weight. PX903 or Insanity?

  51. Hello.. im currently 16 years old and im 5’7 and 170lbs I used to be in athletics. I just recently quit because it was too time consuming. I just want to have a toned flat stomach.. Which program would you recommend for me?.. thank you for your time

  52. Hello! Happy to have found your extremely informative site. I am 47 and have lost almost 70 lbs since April 2014 through regular exercise and healthy eating. Now I am 5’4″ and weigh 185. I have 40 left to lose. I am quite motivated and get at least 30 mins cardio in 7 days a week and at least 2 days of some strength training. I have noticed it is getting harder to see results. I’ve looked at both P90X and Insanity, as well as the 21 day fix. I do not want to get bored! What program would you recommend for me? I am really wanting to see dramatic results by my next birthday in June. I enjoy both the strength training and the cardio-anything that makes me really sweat! I would like to lose fat, continue to build lean muscle, and gain more flexibility. Thanks in advance for your time!

    1. Hello Desiree! Congratulations on your weight loss so far – that is really terrific! I think the 21 Day Fix would be a great program for you. It incorporates an easy-to-follow diet plan and has all the cardio, yoga, and strength training that you love and are looking for. And…it will make you sweat. If you’d like to read more about the 21 Day Fix, make sure to visit my review page here. Hope this helps, and keep up the good work! Bethany

  53. I’m glad I came across your article comparing these from a women’s point of view.
I’ve been looking into trying one of these workouts and I’m not sure if one (or either) would be a good fit. I would to drop about 10 lbs to be back to my pre-children weight.

I have a history of playing sport through my 20s where I did a lot of endurance and strength training (rugby). Then since having kids, I have been playing rec league soccer in summers and belly dancing year round.

I’m trying to find a workout that will help me tone around my middle without so much cardio that I reduce my chest size. I had already dropped from a C cup to B cup from having kids and then I trained twice for marathons (half and full) in the past few years and every time I increased my cardio to that level I lose so much fat that I’m down to an A cup. I’m trying to find a work out that will be enough cardio and toning work to lose my middle without losing all my fat everywhere.

Would either one of these workouts be a better fit for trying to target mostly losing/toning in the middle section? And overall toning besides.

  54. I am currently on day five of insanity let me just say I did not do anything before this I just sat on a couch watching tv I’m 5 ft 4 in tall and weigh 186 lbs I am absolutely loving the intensity of these workouts I love being drenched in sweat after each workout is great and the shaky feelings my muscles have after each workout is awesome lol I’m hoping to lose at least 30 pounds without changing my eating habits wish me luck

  55. Hi Bethany! I am 19 years old and 5’3″. I have never been an athletic person or have done any kind of exercise yet I have always been slim. But recently i have been noticing gain in weight (skinny fat), especially in my midsection and arms. I want to tone up my whole body and be in more shape also with losing fat in my midsection. i also want to have more muscles in my lower body or to get them bigger/thicker without. I’m debating on p90x and insanity. I just don’t know which program is better for me. please help.

    1. Hi Kiabeth, It depends on what type of exercise you like. There are a few reviews that you can take a look at on this site.

  56. Hi, I am 27 years old. I have a baby 7 month ago. I am 124 libs and 5,5. I do not want to lose weight want to gain muscle mass. Also have problems with cellulite.

Any recommendations based on this information?

    1. Hi Fabiane, Body Beast is the at home workout program that you will want to take a look at for building muscle mass. Cellulite is another problem in it’s own, I do have a couple articles on this site that discuss the problem, if you use the search bar, you should find some helpful information. Bethany

  57. Hi Bethany,

I’m 28, 5’7″ and 197 pounds. In high school and college I was extremely active. I ran, played sports, and did crew. I had always been solidly built, ranging from 135 – 145 until during my pregnancy I ballooned over 200. I still play sports, attempt to run, and have tried various diets but can’t lose much. I worked with a trainer once and got down to 171, but I couldn’t afford to keep that up, and have gone up, up, down, up, up, down ever since. Can you recommend a program? P90x, Insanity, or anything else? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Mindy, May I suggest taking a look at the 21 Day Fix program, there is a review on this site. Getting your diet down will help with the ups and downs, plus it will get you in the habit of daily exercise. Bethany

  58. Hi there,

I am 31, 5’3″ and about 120 pounds. I am pretty content with my weight- maybe wouldn’t mind losing a small amount of weight, but my main goal is to gain muscle and tone. I am thin but very out of shape both cardiovascular wise and very “flabby.” If something is extremely difficult or takes forever, I tend to lose motivation. I already eat very strict paleo with no added fruit except a handful of berries a day and will need to continue with this same diet due to health issues (autoimmune issues).

Any recommendations based on this information?

    1. Hi Kellie, I would not recommend either one these programs to you. Both programs are extremely intense and take a lot of effort. Plus, it sounds like you are looking to tone more than lose weight. I would suggest taking a look at Brazil Butt Lift or the PiYo workout, you can find revies of both on this site. Bethany

  59. Hi, Bethany. I am 18 years old and i’m 5’7. I started a culinary program at school this year and I noticed that I’m gaining weight i’m at 160 now and I would really like to go down about 20-30 pounds and start college later this coming year with a really healthy and fit lifestyle. I have p90x but I haven’t tried using the program yet. Would you recommend it? I’d love to just be toned, healthy, and hopefully stress free after this journey. P.S. I also want to look good in my dress for prom in early May! Please help!

    1. Hi Quin! Congratulations on the decision to get fit. The good news is that you’ve decided to take the first step in trying to figure out how to live a healthier lifestyle. That is HUGE and farther than some people will ever make it, so good for you!

If you already have P90X and free weights or resistance bands to use for all the resistance training in P90X, I would definitely just follow that program. It’s a great workout that will get you lean and mean in time for May. The only thing about P90X I wouldn’t follow 100% is the diet plan. I would stick to phase I and phase II – you will never need to follow the super-high carb intake in phase III unless your body fat has gone down low enough that you’d be considered an athlete with how little body fat you have, which isn’t going to happen exercising for one hour every day.

Just remember to always be mindful and listen to your body, and do the workouts at your own pace. While you should push yourself each and every workout, don’t injure yourself by pushing beyond your limits. Good luck! P90X will definitely get you toned, healthy and feeling better overall. I hope this helps, but if you do have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Take care – Bethany

  60. Hi Bethany,
Thanks for writing this informative article. After reading both your article and reviewing YouTube videos, I’m leaning towards Insanity. However, my final decision will be based on how you answer this question: which program works best on carpeted floor?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Crystal, I would definitely go with Insanity – it works awesome on carpeted floors. The weights with P90X can be a litty iffy. Hope this helps! Bethany

  61. Hey. I am 27 years old I have been doing the gym thing for about 4 months now. I have lost 13 pounds and 4% body fat. I am trying to get in the military. I have around 20 pounds to go. I started at 180 and am now 167. I am trying to figure out how to lose the weight faster I am dieting and everything like I should. Any advice?

    1. Hi Stacey, for those going into the military, I think P90X is the better option. Congrats on the weight loss so far, you will get there. -Bethany

  62. So both my mom and I are looking to lose weight. Both of us are over weight and unhappy with the way our bodies are. I am 18 and she is 50. I used insanity as part of conditioning for high school basketball and was in love with it. We only did it for about a month 1 day a week. Both of us are looking to shred weight and build muscle and follow a diet plan. I am torn on which one we should be doing. We’ve been unhappy for too long and we are ready to change our lives. (:

  63. Hi Bethany! I’m 17 years old and I will be 18 in a little over a month. I’m 6’0 feet tall and currently 178.8 pounds. I play basketball and basically year round. The thing is I don’t look this weight at all. When I weighed myself the other day I got really discouraged and I want to lose 30 pounds or get to 140. The weight is mainly in my tummy. I don’t know if it’s some of the muscle I have or what but I don’t like me at this weight. I want to still have a butt tho lol( or bigger) Which do you prefer I should get? A friend said I should try t25 but I don’t know. I would like to lose this weight by February if possible. Thanks!

    1. Hi Ida, I know it sounds petty, but these programs are for those 18 years old and older. And, I cannot give advice to those under 18 years of age. Sorry. -Bethany

  64. Hi! I’m 25 yrs old 5’6 150lbs. I’m wanting to lose about 20 ponds. I have both Insanity and P90X. Even though I did get good results with insanity about a year ago I gained everything I lost back and some. I really enjoy lifting weights better then I do cardio. Would P90X be good for me to lose the weight I want and get lean muscle or should I just do Insanity to lose the weight I’m wanting to?

    1. Hi Jackie, If you like lifting weights do P90X, P90X will have a weight loss effect too. Plus you might build a little more muscle. Bethany

  65. Hey! I’m 15 and want to get in shape while I’m still young. I weigh 165-170 and am around 5’4″. I want to end up weighing around 120. I have the equipment to do p90x and own both of them. I’ve tried p90x before and always quit out of a lack of motivation. What do you think I should do?

  66. Hello Bethany thank you posting this article as I’m struggling on which one to get. I’m a 38 mother of 4 two grown babies and my 19 month old twins, I gained so much weight with my twins I was up to almost 160 after I had them I lost the baby weight and I was 135 but I got the baby blues and I shot right back up to about no less then 157, In June i decided to start taking care of my self and make a change, I started the Jillian Michaels body revolution workout videos 5 to 6 days a week I do watch what I eat something I had never done before, I’m now down to 128 oh yeah and I’m 5 feet tall lol, I want to still loose lots of fat but also want to build muscle I love to run I hopes in one day to do marathon.. which would be better? Or would both be good to switch from day to day? Thank you in advance… ;)

    1. Hi Ofelia, eihter program would help you reach your goals. It is not a good idea to switch day to day as the programs are designed to be followed alone. There are hybrid schedules of the two programs that you can look into, but these are more for advanced and not suited for beginners. Soundd like P90X might be the better program gour you at this point or have a look at the new P90 program, I;ll be writing a review in the future. Bethany

  67. hello!

my name is sierra, and i started working out regularly in february 2014, i started doing a workout on daily burn called inferno and lost about 12 inches total! i started weighing my heaviest at 160 and I’m 5’6. I’m currently at 147. and am still over my heights healthy weight. id like to be in the middle of my lowest and highest healthy weight which is 130-35lbs. i loved inferno, ansi did it a couple times, but I’m bored with doing the same thing. i tried t25, but i quiet honestly found shaun t… hard to like. i want fast weight loss results, and my main areas i need to loose weight in is my stomach and my thighs. but i dont have good knees, so I’m afraid insanity and how much cardio will be a little hard on me, but i do like the idea of strength train with p90x. i just wouldn’t buy the pull up bar. id use weights. i want to be at my goal and toned by next summer!!

    1. Hi Sierra, Congrats on the weight loss so far! I have no doubt you will hit your goal. I agree with you, I do not think Insanity woould be a good program for you, especially not with the knee issues. P90X does sound like it would be the better option for you, the strangth training and cardio workout will be a good mix. You do not need the pull-up bar, but you will need a resistance band for some of the moves, you can find these cheap at almost any retail store. -Bethany

  68. Hi Beth,

I have completed Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred and Focus T25 and have just started Insanity (week 2). I’ve been told mixed messages about which I should do, Insanity or P90X. I’m not sure how much I weigh but I’m looking to lose as much weight as possible in the next two months. PLEASE help me in which program I should be doing!! I’m so confused on which will be the most beneficial in losing weight quickest. I have a strict diet already given by a PT but it’s just the workout I’m not sure. Should I do insanity and go to the gym? I know weights are good for women in weight loss. SERIOUSLY need help, I’m really determined and trying really hard!!! I’ve just heard so many mixed things on which program will help me lose weight … any suggestions?

    1. Hello, I think you are over complicating it. Do not do Insanity and go to the gym. Insanity is extreme enough and going to the gym too could lead to overtraining. Your goal should be to lose 1-2 pounds of weight a week. This is a healthy amount of weight to lose, in the long-term this will lead to permanent weight loss. My suggestion is this, choose a program and stick to it. If you like strength training, go with P90X, If you like the intense cardio workouts in Insanity, stick with it, eat right and you will lose weight. -Bethany

  69. Hi Bethany. I’m 45, 4’11” and currently weigh 116lbs. I too have had trouble with my weight fluctuating throughout my life. I weighed 182lbs 2 years ago and lost the weight due to depression and barely eating.which has left me with slightly saggy skin round my middle area. I know I don’t need to lose too much more weight, if anything none my family and friends tell me but toning up my middle is a big issue for me. I wonder if you feel that I would get good results with adding either of these workouts to my routines. I already do Rockin Body and Hip Hop Abs to help my daughter lose weight but like to mix things up a bit and I find them fairly easy. I have already noticed a slight improvement and only been using them 3 weeks. I now eat regularly and healthier and my energy levels have rocketed even though I have trouble sleeping.

    1. Hi Julie, I would stick with the Rockin Body and Hip Hop Abs for a round or two. Then you could move onto either P90X, Insanity, or T25. Couple things that have helped me get better sleep are. Creating a night time routine, no electronics an hour before bed, no intense exercise after 7, and mo caffeine after 3,

Also, I wanted to say it is great you are helpng your daughter and it sounds like you are inspiring her. -Bethany

  70. Bethany, I am 5’3″ 135lbs have been doing P90X for over a year and really love it. I did not follow the diet completely but did try to eat better during the week and lost pounds and inches. I am not a scale girl as much as a, how do I look, feel and clothes fit type of person. I am borrowing Insanity from a friend and was wondering what you think about combining the 2? I hate the idea of dropping the weights all together but I also think I need more cardio to lean up. I did a half marathon last year in addition to P90X training and still didn’t get in rocking shape. I am starting to see slow progress with losing body fat and seeing more veins and such but I really want to lean up and tone without bulk. Suggestions?

    1. Hi Linday, I think a P90X and Insanity hybrid schedule would be a great mix of cardio and weights for you. Slow and steady progress should be everyone’s goal! That way the weight will stay of for good. Stay on top of your diet and you’ll get where you want to be. -Bethany

  71. HI Bethany,

I have purchased both the p90x and insanity dvds a while back.

I am 5’4 and currently 146 plds. I stopped working out and got really bad eating habits over the past 6 months. Before relocating to a different state I was weighing in at 133, very active did strength training, bootcamps, zumba, daily cardio workouts like treadmill, jogging, elliptical. I had went from 165 lbs to 133. All with hard work and dedication.

I lost my drive these past 6 months and now my overall body has got flabby, and I’ve gained fat all over. My stomach has always been a huge trouble area. But I’m ready to get back up and get my drive back.

I’m not sure which videos to do, I love the cardio but I also use to weight train 2 times a week at my old gym. I want to shed fat fast… but also build lean muscle?

    1. Hi Teresa, P90X does have the weight training which Insanity does not and since you like training at the gym with weights twice a week, I would suggest P90X. P90X has the cardio days too, so you’ll build muscle and burn fat. -Bethany

  72. HI thank you for your time. I am looking to tone my legs again. I was always muscular but now that I am 43 I have noticed….well…..flabbiness (lack of muscle in my quads) I even see small ripples, its saddening. I am active though, I play field hockey weekly with 20 somethings and they are impressed. I want to tone up, don’t need to lose weight, im 123lbs, 5’7″ my stomach is toned well. It’s just my leds, I don;t push myself enough, I can, but don’t..No pain, no gain…haven’t felt real pain in a while, I’m ready! What do you think?
    Thanks!
    Lori

    1. Hi Lori, sounds like you need a program that will push you. Either of these two programs will do just that. I might give the edge to Insanity as I think it would be more beneficial to your field hockey. -Bethany

  73. Hey!

Here’s my situation. I have never really been a hard core fit person. I hate gyms. Everytime I go into one I am intimidated and feel like I don’t really know what to do. Because of that, I have always liked to stay active by spending a lot of time outdoors doing activities like camping, hiking, walking my dog, etc. While I live a fun lifestyle, I have never experienced good muscle tone because I’m just not very athletic. I have always been average sized…not thin and muscular but still able to get away with wearing a bikini-type body.

HOWEVER, since starting college I tend to spend more time being sedentary hitting the books rather than spending time outdoors. Also with all that studying comes a lot of snacking, so you can imagine how that is not good for my health. About 25 pounds have crept on me over the last 3 years, and I am ready for them to GO. I have always liked the look of people that are FIT, not necessarily thin.

Based on what you have said, I’m leaning towards insanity just to get that initial boost of cardio for fat loss reasons. However, over the long haul I would like to have some feminine muscle tone. Will insanity give me that, or should I go ahead with P90X?

(My other reason for leaning towards Insanity is because I am on a tight budget. I like that it requires no equipment. However, if you think P90X is a better fit for me, then I don’t mind investing the money.)

    1. Hi Amanda, I agree Insanity does sound like it would be the better option for you while you are in school. Also, you might want to look into T25 also from Shaun T, I have a review on the sidebar, T25 workouts are only 25 minutes long and while you are in school they might be a better option. Plus, T25 has resistance training that will help you build that muscle. And, for snacking you may want to try some healthier ooptions, like nuts and/or baby carrots. These are easy and healthy. -Bethany

  74. Hello, I work out pretty often consisting of Hot Yoga, Zumba, some weight training and pole dance. Im trying to get rid of a stubborn 10 lbs and tone tone tone. Im torn between p90x, insanity and t25. What are your thoughts ? Thank you

    1. Hi Nichol, the last 10 lbs are the hardest to lose. If you like weihgt training, P90X has, Insanity is harcore cardio, no weights. Also, to lose those last 10, your diet is going to have to be spot on, so that might be something to take a closer look at. -Bethany

  75. Hi Bethany,
I’m 20 years old, 5’3 and 130 lbs with very little muscle. After two years in college my body has been on a decline. I try to get to the gym when I can but feel I have no motivation. I’m hoping one of these at home systems would help assist me more. My main target is my belly, sliming it and then toning it. Next to that would be full body toning. After reading your comparison I am now confused about which option to choose. I am apprehensive about buying all of the equipment for P90X so insanity has been the program I’ve been more intreated in. What do you think would best accommodate my fitness goal? Thank you!!

    1. Hi Ashley, if equipment is a concern than Insanity would be a much better option as you do not need any. It will also help slim and tone you up. -Bethany

  76. Hi I have 42 years old my weigh is 164 pound Iam 5 feet tall. I want to loose weight and tone my muscle. Now I will like you help me to know which one yo recomended to do.

    Thank you

    1. Hi Elena, both programs can help you reach your goals, but they are different. If you like strenght training/boot camp style workouts, I would recommend P90X. If cardio is more of your game then Insanity would be the better choice for you. -Bethany

  77. Hi. I didn’t decide yet which one to do so I guess I need some help. I am 21 years old, 5’7 in, 133lbs. I’ve done some sport for all my life but I stopped 2 years ago when I injured my elbow and went to college. I did try P90X workout once like for 2 weeks but did not steak with it… So now my goal is to get in shape and specifically i would like to do muscle toning(maybe with some weight loss, not sure if need that first) and improve flexibility. I was thinking to go for Insanity as I don’t wanna buy all the equipment for the P90X but i would like to hear some opinion or advice.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Julia, if your gut is telling you to go with Insanity that is the program I would choose. Insnaity woll help get you toned, but does lack any real flexibility training, you may want to add 5-10 minutes of stretching prior to or after your workouts. -Bethany

  78. Hello … I need help!! I’m trying to get back in shape after my baby … I’m 61inches(5’1) and right now I’m weight 170lbs … I wanna lose 35lbs to be at army standards … Yes I’m active duty and I’m on my post partum period for the next 5 months … Also I just started college classes to complete my degree… What workout would you recommend ?? Insanity or t25?? I’m ready to start working out … I already started running a month after my csection … Please help

    1. Hi Josephine, congratulations on the baby and beginning to take club college classes. With how busy you are in going to be I would consider T25. Just be sure to check with your doctor before beginning. – Bethany

  79. I have done some insanity workouts with my cousins som and I did them for a week, then we did P90X now I don’t which one to buy because I liked both

  80. Hey, I am 25 and I am 5’7 and I weigh a shameful 190… Its all in my tummy area after having a kid a few years back … My legs are small and my arms etc are also…. I need to be 155-160 ish or at the lowest 145 I tried t25 and I got bored cuz It didnt challenge me enough.. i am an Army vet and I feed of challenge.. I am not too outta shape I can run 2 miles easy and do some push ups etc Your thoughts? also what do you think about shakology

Also I dont want too much loose skin
    lol

    1. Hi Des, I liken Shaunt T to an Army drill sargeant in the Insanity workout and it will surely be difficult enough for you. It is the most intense Beachbody program available in my opinion.

With Shakeology, you just have to remember it is much more than a protein skake. I did not jump on the Shakeology bandwagon with both feet, but after trying it, it has become a part of my daily nutrtition. It fits great into my work schedule as a meal replacement and fills in any vitamin or minerals I would be missing from whole foods alone.

As for the loose skin, you are still young so you skin still should elastic enough to firm back up after your weight loss. A topical vitamin c cream can also help and are relatively cheap.
      -Bethany

  81. Hi! Thanks for the information. I am 114 lbs, 28 years old. I used to weigh 125 but became a vegan and cut out alcohol and sugar. For the past 4 years I have done vigorous yoga everyday, I have nice arm muscles. I would love some abs though! I have started occasionally drinking alcohol again and eating dairy two nights a week, my stomach gains weight immediately from this, I tend to get a little pouch. My goal is to have a flat stomach. The problem is that I have wrist injury and can’t really do push ups anymore and I havent been able to do yoga anymore either (which has left me very depressed)…looking for something that is not terribly time consuming and wont put too much pressure on my wrists. I also ready that P90X has a 30 minute workout version now…Thanks so much!!

    jenna

    1. Hi Jenna, honestly, P90X and Insanity are not good options if you have wrist problems that prevent you from being able to do push-ups. A Beachbody program like Hip Hop Abs would be a better one for you. It focuses on toning up your core without spending all your time on the floor, and the workouts are around the 30-minute mark.

If there is ever a move that feels uncomfortable on your wrist, just modify the move until it is comfortable – you don’t want to injure yourself. I would also keep track of what you’re eating on myfitnesspal.com if you aren’t already doing so. When eating a restricted diet such as yours, you need to make sure you’re getting in enough protein and healthy fats, so it’s a great, easy way to keep track. I hope this helps. Good luck!

  82. Hey!

I am 5’7 and about 210 lbs. I am strong, but not in very good shape. I’m interested in shedding the pounds and not looking like a deflated balloon after I do it. What kind of program do you recommend? I’ve been looking into T25, P90 and Insanity. Thanks!

    1. Hi Maura – the secret to not getting that deflated balloon appearance is losing weight at a slow and steady rate as well as building muscle to increase the snapback of your skin. I would suggest doing Focus T25 and opt in for the third, gamma phase (this is the most weightlifting-concentrated phase). T25 is great for people of all fitness levels – it’s challenging, yet there’s always the modified moves to follow if you’re having trouble keeping up. Once you build your endurance, you will be able to push yourself harder each and every time.

Plus, the fact it’s 25 minutes a day makes it easier to stick with – anyone can make time for 25 minutes. Just make sure to follow the dietary recommendations, keep track of your calorie intake on a website like myfitnesspal.com, and stick with the program. You can get the body you’ve always wanted – you just have to take it one day at a time and always remember the reason you’re working out whenever you’re feeling like you might want to give up. Good luck!

  83. Hello, I’ve been running for about a year now. I want to improve my endurance. I want to incorporate some strength training into my routines. What do you suggest

    1. Hi Michelle, I’d go with P90X if you’re predominantly looking to weight train. It should help with your endurance as well. Insanity would also help with endurance, but it’s not so much of a strength training routine. Hope this helps, but please let me know if you have any other questions.

  84. Hi, thank you for this article and the help.
I’m 21….with 9 years experience, I’m 4″11 around 200 pounds. In the past I have tried several free work out routines online from bobyrock.TV (now dailyhiit) and the ntc app. Which I really enjoyed but I didn’t lose any weight. But I did love them both the high energy of the work out and the energy I would have throughout the day. But again I wasn’t losing weight. What program do you think is best for me?

    1. Hi Jessica, have you ever considered Focus T25? It’s high energy like Insanity, but easier on your body or if you’re not in already good shape (I still have trouble finishing the workouts!) It’s just 25 minutes a day and will really help blast fat. Just make sure to remember that diet is more than half the battle when trying to get in shape. T25 comes with an easy to follow nutrition plan with all the recipes containing five or few ingredients which definitely saves you time in the kitchen. -Bethany

  85. Hi! Your article was very helpful. I am trying to decide which workout program P90X or Insanity would work best for me. I am in shape, but need to get in better shape. I start the police academy in 2 and a half months. The focus in the academy is sprinting, push ups, and core. They try to do a “crossfit” type of workout. Which program would work best to get in shape for that? Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Melanie, I alwasys suggest for people who are training for law enforcement that the P90X workout program is the better choice. It is more of a bootcamp style training than Insanity and I believe this will prepare you better the police academy training. Good luck at the academy. -Bethany

  86. Hi, Bethany Lyn! Your site is very informative and you seem to give great advice!
I’m 27 years old, 5’2, and 115 lbs. I’m a pretty small 115, as I tend to hold muscle well without working out frequently, and I’m not interested in losing more than 5 pounds or so. However, I have noticed in my later 20s that my usual thick but firm calves/thighs/butt/love handles have gotten a little musher while my upper body remains lean. Ugh. Also, I have a wedding next summer to prepare for…

I’m leaning more towards p90x because it seems it would do more to shape and firm my lower half, rather than the weight-loss toting insanity. However, I want a well rounded workout rather than just squatting at the gym all day. I already eat pretty well and am very active during the day as a power walking RN. Any thoughts? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jeanine, I agree with you, I think that you will find that the bootcamp like style workouts in P90X are the perfect fit for you. The muscle confusion principle that P90X is based upon will keep you from getting bored with the workouts as the schedule and workouts change frequently which never allows you body to plateau. P90X will also target those problem areas so you will be in perfect shape for next summer’s big evernt! And, thank you for all that you do as an RN. -Bethany

  87. HI,

I have been looking at both programs, but really don’t know which to choose! I started a weight lose journey about 1.5 years ago. I started weighing in at 256 lbs, and got down to 170 lbs, since December I have gained around 9 lbs (not bad, but I am not happy about it!). I am board with the routine, which really only consisted of 35 mins on and elliptical several days per week. I am not coordinated at ALL! I bought zumba because a friend of mine loves it, but I cant follow, I have six left feet, all going in the wrong direction!!! So, I want to lose about 20lbs, must be left foot friendly, and can not be all about push ups and pull ups, no upper body strength! I love food, healthy and unhealthy, but have been maintaining! Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

    1. Hi Jesslyn, thank you for sharing all this detail, it is very helpful when trying to give you the best advice that I hope will help you reach your health and fitness goals. Now, congratulations on your weight loss so far – that is incredible! I hope you’re proud of what you’ve accomplished so far, because it’s amazing.

Who cares about the 9 lbs? The fact is you know it, you owned up to it, so now you’re going to keep pushing forward and finish off those last 20lbs. You already have a really great attitude.

As for a workout program I think you would like that does not involve dancing or too much upper body moves, I would strongly suggest Focus T25. It is NOT easy (which I feel like some people believe because it’s just 25 minutes each day), but it does have toned down moves, so if you’re not in the best shape upper body-wise, it offers you alternatives. You can get really great results in the 25 minutes a day with T25 – it really is no joke. There is no doubt in my mind that you can finish off the rest of your weight loss journey with this program. And if you want, you can even opt into the Gamma phase for an additional 30 days of working out with the program. I just feel like Insanity is going to be too much upper body push-ups without any lower impact versions to follow, and P90X has A LOT of upper body activities, so unless you have a bench that you can kneel on while doing your pull-ups, you are probably not going to enjoy it. You can read my comparison of Insanity vs T25 here.

With eating, just try to be as mindful as possible about what you’re putting into your body. I would suggest using myfitnesspal.com to track your calories and keep you on track.

I hope this helps, but if you do have any questions along the way or need any help, please let me know. You are a serious inspiration, so remember that while you’re pushing your hardest during your workouts. You’ve come this far, so just keep up the good work, and you will reach your goals. Good luck!

      1. Thank you! I will check this out! I am very proud of how far I have come, just have fallen off my wagon and need to get motivated to lose the remaining weight! Again thank you for your time and suggestions!!! :)

  88. Hi Bethany,
Wondering if you’ve tried Insanity Asylum? And if so, how does that compare to P90X?

In a nutshell, I have about 10 to 12lbs to lose (after having a baby). I just dusted off my Insanity DVD’s, and have been back at it for a week and I’m lovin it! I’ve always been a workout junkie and strive to push myself at the gym but Insanity has made me realizes my stamina and cardio conditioning needed to challenge.

Anyways, after I lose the weight — I’d like to maintain my weight lose AND tone up. Wondering what program would be better for that – Insanity Asylum OR P90X?

Thanks so much — looking forward to hearing from you.
    Emily

    1. Hi Emily, if you’re having trouble with Insanity, you are not going to enjoy the Asylum. It is much more difficult. Instead, I would suggest following P90X – it will definitely help you lose those last 10-12lbs and get you toned and looking better than ever. It’s definitely not easy either, but a bit more manageable than Insanity Asylum. I hope this helps…good luck!

  89. Hi there,

thanks for the article! i was just wondering, i’m 18, weigh around 133lbs- i did insanity last summer and lost 10lbs however I have partly put some back on in these winter months and would like to lose around 8 lbs and tone up for abs etc- i have been working out all year round so my muscles are fine but just need to tone up slightly and lose the fat layer! i have both insanity and p90x and don’t know which one is the best one to embark on? Thanks, Lucy x

    1. Hi Lucy, I think either program would allow to reach you goal. It really comes down to what type of exercise program you want to follow. P90x is weight training and cardio while Insanity is mostly cardio. -Bethany

  90. Hi Bethany,

Thanks for writing the side by side comparison. It was straightforward and very easy to digest.

I’m 5 foot, weighing at 115lbs looking to get fit, shave off some inches and slim down. I’ve always been active and sporty but like everyone else have fallen victim into the college slump and gained quite a bit (loose arms and tummy). I’ve now done p90x and whist I feel stronger and can see some definition; there’s still a lot of stubborn fat on my body obscuring the muscles. Starting to think it might just be me that’s the problem!

What would you recommend next: insanity, a second round of p90 or something else entirely? Looking to lose about 10lbs or so.

    Thanks so much

    1. HI Angie, I would recommmend changing it up with the Insanity workout. This shhould help you lose that last bit of fat and look lean. -Bethany

  91. Hi Bethany,

So glad you posted this. I am between 5’3 and 5’4 and I weigh 128 pounds. I teach spinning classes once per week (but will be taking a break for the summer) and I do hot power yoga classes twice per week. I have always been athletic and active (I sometimes run, and always enjoy trying new workouts). I get bored really quickly with workouts, and I only enjoy doing really tough workouts (hence the hot power yoga and spinning). I was leaning towards P90X because I think I need weights in my workout plan. I would really like to tone up my arm flab and stomach. I have a strong core, but don’t like the way I look in a bathing suit. I think I could stand to lose about 10-12 lbs. My lower half is really strong and toned from spinning and playing soccer my whole life…but my abs aren’t completely visible, obliques could use some work, and my arms definitely need some work (the one area of my body i’ve never figured out how to tone properly). I think a 60 day workout plan would be better for me than 90 days since I get bored easily…but Insanity seems to be geared more towards weight loss and less towards toning so I was thinking P90X? Would Insanity get me these results? Which would you recommend?

Also, I don’t want to stop doing my hot yoga classes twice per week…could I work those into to either Insanity or P90X workouts?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Sara, I would recommend P90X. I believe it fits in more with your goals and I think you would like the workouts more. Don’t worry about getting bored either, the premise of P90X is muscle confusion so you wil get plenty of workout variety. -Bethany

      1. I actually went ahead and am trying Insanity for now. I’ve started by testing a few of the workouts but am not starting the 60 day challenge until next week…maybe P90X will be my next challenge, but I’m hoping to lose the weight and tone up using Insanity. Do you think Insanity will show me results?

  92. Hi there,

I’m a 38yr old mom, 5’7″ and 174lbs. I do HIIT running, 1/2 marathon training, and I lift weights (hammer curl @ 25lb, back squat 125lb, chest press 100lb – just to give you an idea of my weights). I eat 95% clean, with no processed foods. I’m looking to loose about 10lbs but also want to gain lean muscle. I’m not a beginner to exercise and have been at the gym for 10yrs now and have often worked with a personal trainer. Not sure which program would best suit me.

    1. Hi Shannon, I would recommend P90X to you over Insanity. Sounds like it would be a better fit for your style of training. And it will help you obth lose fat and add some muscle at the sme time. -Bethany

  93. Hello,
I just came across your blog and I love how intricate and wise you are with your experiences! I’m currently 19 years old and lately my freshman year of college and its stress have gotten to me- I now weigh 133 lbs. I used to be a dancer and my arms are very toned for my body size. I would like to go down to 110-115 lbs by the end of this summer. My long time goal has been to achieve abs- not the crazy muscular ones, but the nice toned ones. What program do you recommend for weight loss and ab toning, Insanity or P90X? Thank you so much for your time and effort!!

    1. Hi Ashley – freshman year has the same effect on so many others, so it’s nothing to worry about. It’s a total lifestyle change.

I would recommend Insanity to get you toned, but my only qualm is that at your size, it may get you that very low fat, muscular look it sounds like you’re not necessarily looking for…P90X would definitely have that effect on you.

I’m not sure if you’d be interested, but Brazil Butt Lift was specifically designed to get you that longer, leaner look of a dancer – or a well-toned supermodel. It won’t get you ripped like P90X or Insanity, but it will get you streamlined. You can read my official BBL review here.

Honestly, as long as you’re following a reduced, healthy diet and the at-home workout program of your choice that you’re going to like and stick with, there is no doubt in my mind you will reach your weight loss goals. Good luck! You’re young, so you’ll spring right back into shape in not time :)

  94. Hi Bethany –

I loved this post. I am 5’4, 28, and weighing in at a whopping 236. I started taking control of myself back in February and did a cycle of Insanity through April. I enjoyed the workouts thoroughly as I love love love the high intensity exercises. I could feel my legs getting stronger and really slimmed down my back and arms as well as my stomach (see my progress at IG: foodiegirlgetsfit). In total I lost exactly 15 lbs over the course of insanity. I did slack a little bit the last 2 weeks because I was so busy with work I think I only did 4 workouts per week (I’m a CPA and I worked out through the entirety of tax season which was a real feat for me and then I think I just need 2 weeks to decompress). I took 2 weeks off to decompress after tax season was over and just this Monday I started P90x. I know that the more muscle you have the more cals you burn. I want to be thin and muscular eventually with a reachable goal weight of probably 245 given that I’ve always been muscular and at 245 and muscular I’m a size 8. After the first few P90x workouts this week I am not sure if its right for me. I am a woman with high testosterone so I am slightly concerned this getting bigger more quickly than other women because of that factor but am doing 12-15 reps of lighter weight rather than 8-10 with heavier. I just kind of miss the Insanity workouts I guess. P90x plyo was good. I really don’t like yoga as its really very long and boring for me. I wonder if maybe I should sub some insanity workouts in for the cardio and yoga p90x workouts? Also, do you have any experience with very very very overweight women with high T doing P90x Classic? My current BB coach is a guy and I’m not sure he understands me or my needs really (he’s a very nice guys though).

Thanks so much, any input would be helpful!

Ummm goal weight of 145*** NO, I do not want to be 245 – haha sorry. I guess its been so long since I’ve been in ONEderland that I make those mistakes!

    1. Hi Lauren, congratulations on your progress so far – that’s awesome…be proud of what you’ve accomplished! And it’s okay to take a break if you need it. Working long hours can really put a damper on your body, so taking that two weeks was the right decision.

As for P90X, it’s okay to add some Insanity workouts in, but to me, it sounds like you’re not enjoying it that much. Have you considered Insanity Asylum or something like TurboFire/TurboJam? They’re not as weight-based as P90X, so I think you would feel more comfortable working out without having to worry about getting big. The truth is that even men will not get that big with P90X – the high reps really make it difficult. You will define and lose weight, but you won’t ever get huge – a program like BodyBeast and weight gainers will do that.

And remember, being overweight and having high T are two different things, so you have to treat them as such. To tackle your weight problem, I would suggest doing a program you’re not afraid is going to bulk you up, so you can have fun with it and eating a healthy, well-rounded diet full of whole foods. Drinking spearmint tea, eating rice, consuming soy, green and yellow veggies like zucchini and squash may also reduce testosterone levels, but you need to make sure they won’t interfere with what you’re already taking.

Good luck – just stick with your exercise program and a reduced calorie, healthy diet and you will reach your weight loss goals – I guarantee it. Good luck!

  95. I am 31 and 136.4 lb at 5’3″. My previous resting weight was 118. I am most interested in getting back to that weight and building muscle definition especially in my core to improve posture. I understand that if the muscle builds I may not get as low as 118. I used to swing dance several times a week and while I didn’t have muscle definition I never gained much weight. Now I have a stressful desk job and quickly packed on 20 lb and lost my upper body strength. Which would you suggest?

    1. Hi Stacey, either program would help, but if you are looking at building upper body strength I would suggest P90X. You may also want to consider Focus T25, there is a review on the right hand sidebar of my site. -Bethany

  96. Hi I am 21 years old and 5 2. I currently weigh 135 and am trying to lose the last 10 pounds along with tone my legs and thighs. Which program would be better for me? I am also going to school full time, so I want something short like 30-45 mins. I have tried t25, no major results. I have been plateauing for the last 4 months. What should I do?

    1. Hi Currie, I would suggest you try Insanity, since the workouts are shorter than P90X’s and will fit into your schedule better. Changing up your workout program should also help with the plateauing effect. You may also want to look at your diet and how many calories you’re eating. If you’re eating the perfect amount of calories in relation to how many calories you’re burning, it will also cause a plateau effect – so always make sure you have a calorie deficit. Good luck!

  97. Hi Miss Bethany. As I’ve finished reading your post i was more interested in losing weight. I’m 18 years old and currently at 210 lbs at 5’5 height. Since it’s summer, i wanted to start a healthy lifestyle and i see myself as a failure due to the body shape i have. I hate going to gym since i feel everyone’s watching me. My goal weight is 120 lbs, is that achievable? What program/s do you recommend for me to attain that goal weight?

    Thanks :)
    -Mao

    1. Hi Mao, of course your goal is attainable, but it will take time and a lot of dedication on your part. Insanity or P90X are likely to advanced for you at this time. T25 might be a better option for you at this point or if you like dance workouts, Hip Hop Abs is another option. -Bethany

  98. Bethany,

Thanks for writing this! I started working out and watching my diet over a year ago. I have lost 41 lbs so far (yay!). I am currently at 5’2 and 137. However, my erratic nursing school and work schedules have caused issues with not only my energy levels but also my time to fit in good workouts. I currently work out 4 days a week. I run and do weights. I am getting very bored and need to stay motivated! I graduate in 34 days and would like to create a fresh workout routine. Would you suggest one of these videos or just to switch up my routine at the gym? I love doing the weights but also love fitness classes such as hip hop aerobics. I HATE yoga. My goal weight is 128, so I’m not far! I will also have plenty of time on my hands after graduation so longer workouts will definitely not be an issue.

    Thanks!
    -Tia

    1. Hi Tia, congratulations on your weight loss so far – that’s really something to be proud of! You have so little to go :) For now with your current crazy schedule, I think T25(review in sidebar) might be a good program for you. Not only is it always good to change up your routine to keep things fresh, it’s also very important to keep challenging your body. The 25 minutes is easy to fit into even the busiest schedules, which would be good for you now and even when you start working full time. It’s also a really tough workout that will help you lose those last 9 lbs. After that, you could always move on to Insanity or something like TurboFire. P90X is very weight-based, but these other workouts I’ve mentioned all include some form of strength-training whether it’s using your body weight or actual dumbbells. I hope this helps – good luck!

  99. Hi Bethany! I’m a 28 year old mom to two boys (6&2). I’m 5’1 and currently 138 lbs. That may not sound like a lot, but for my height and frame it’s not cute and really unhealthy. I was 118 lbs before my boys (which was heavy for me because I danced my whole life), I wore a size 4 and felt good. (now a 10-11-12) I bought insanity last year and kept at it for a good two weeks before I started to get shin splints and horrible knee pain. I tried to take a week off and get back to it, but it felt awful so…ultimately, I gave up all together. Its now 80 degrees here in the southern states and I’m embarrassed to get into a pair of shorts or even just a short sleeved shirt. I started the couch 25k program and made it through to week 4 until my knees started to hurt again. I still try to walk nightly, but that’s not enough. What would you recommend to drop that 20 lbs?

    1. Hi Lia Marie, with everything you’ve told me, you need to do a workout that has low-impact exercise options so you’re not killing your knees four weeks in. Insanity is really not the right workout if you have bad knees. I think a good option for you to choose to drop those last 20 lbs would be Focus T25. There is a woman doing the lower impact moves during the entire workout, which will be much better on your knees. You could always try BBL too, but it seems like you like that more “feel like you had a really tough workout” than the fun, dance-inspired workouts of BBL. Just remember that a reduced-calorie, healthy diet is just as important as exercise when it comes to losing weight. I hope this helps, but if you do have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck!

  100. Hi Bethany ~ I am on my last two weeks of Insanity and am thinking of doing P90x when I finish. I am 45 years old, 5’9″ and weighed 160 when I started Insanity. I’ll be honest … I didn’t change one part of my diet when I fist started. Shame on me! But I began really watching calories and keeping a journal after that. My calories have ranged from (too low) 1250ish to about a consistent 1650-1750 currently. I’m a little bummed that I’m only losing 1-2 pounds (at most) a week though. Those first two weeks that I was eating so little I didn’t lose anything. After I increased my calories I lost 6 pounds immediately. I’m wondering if I’m eating too much – or too little again – now? I’m tracking everything with My Fitness Pal and am keeping my ratios balanced at 40/40/20. My calories, though, are at 1650 – 1750 max and I’m in the second month of the videos. So, I guess I have two questions. 1) Why would I not be losing (at least!) 2 pounds a week right now? 2) If I stick to my current diet plan will that work for – or against – me with P90x? Any help you can give me would be SO appreciated!

    1. Hi Rachel, congratulations on your weight loss so far – that’s something to be really proud of – nice job!

You have to remember that how much weight you lose each weight will fluctuate – that’s just how it happens. Such things as the amount of sodium you consumed the night before you weighed yourself and hormones can really have an effect. If you’re consistently losing weight like you are, you shouldn’t worry about how much you’re losing… In fact 1-2 lbs of fat per week is optimal weight loss. Anything more than that and you’re losing water weight or muscle!

I think where you’re at a good calorie range right now if you’re still losing weight consistently, although I might switch up your ratios to something a bit more sustainable such as 40/30-35/25-30 (carbs/protein/fat). I hope this helps, but if you do have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck, and keep up the good work – congrats!

  101. Hello I just need an opinion too on which one would work better for me… My arms and belly is my trouble areas I wanna shrink my belly and lose weight and inches off my waist

    1. Hi Courtney, sounds like your main focus is weight loss. Insanity is probably the better option for this goal. -Bethany

  102. Hi, im 16 and would like to get in better shape for sports. Im 5’5″ and 130 lbs, what would you recommend?

    1. Hi Erin, sorry I can only give advice to those 18+. -Bethany

For those older who may be reading this. It would be sport specific, Insanity would be be better for cardiovascualr based sports, and P90X for those that require more strength.

  103. Hi Bethany!

I’m so glad I found this article, but I still can’t decide on which to purchase. I’m 5’2 and weigh about 220. I want to lose weight quickly but I also want to tone up and I like lifting weights. I live in a place where the closest gym is 20 miles away but I hate going to gyms anyway so I’m anxious to find an at home program. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

    1. Hi Dawn, out of the two programs, I think you’d enjoy P90X a lot more than Insanity, because it combines a lot of the weightlifting you like with fat-burning workouts. That being said, P90X is tremendously difficult. The first time I tried it, I was so sore after the first workout that I had to take a week off before I could open my arms again to the fullest extent, which is why you may want to consider starting with another program that is similar to P90X but slightly more doable for those of us who have been away from exercise for a little while – it’s called Power 90. It’s the predecessor to P90X, so it will build up your strength and endurance so you can kick P90X in the butt when you start it without having to take a week off after the first day :) It’s still a tough workout, and you’ll still get great results, but I really think it might be a better fit for you right now. I hope this helps, but if you do have any other questions, please feel free to ask!

  104. Hi Bethany,

I’m 5’3 and I weigh almost eight stone (I have always been petite but I eat like theres no tomorrow!) However I have not got a washboard stomach, my problem is that any extra-weight sticks to my hips, my stomach and my thighs, not evenly over my body! Theres no definition at all. I was really excited to start Insanity however now I am worried that, with my fast metabolism, this may cause me to lose weight. However, great abs is primarily what I want to achieve – and Insanity looks like the best thing for it. I’ve seen pictures of people with my build finishing this 60 day challenge and looking amazing. What would your advise be? If I made sure to eat 2000+ calories per day and stick to the meal plans would this be suitable for me? I also wanted to ask if Insanity was the key to a toned/fuller bottom? My legs and arms are also needing a bit of shape. What would you recommend? I’d really appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Samantha, eating 2000 plus calories should keep you from losing weight with Insanity, if you do just increase your calories in increments of 300 until you maintain body weight. Brazil Butt Lift is a program that is more suited to toning your bottom half, so that is another program you might want to consider. -Bethany

  105. Hi Bethany –
I am 24 years old, 5’6″ ft, and 153lbs. I have both of the programs, but was having hard time choosing which one to go with. I am so glad I came across your blog, because now I can see the comparison of the two programs. BUT I am leaving you a post, because I still don’t know which program would be right for me.

My goal is to tone up and lose weight. You mentioned that Insanity is primary weight loss program and P90X is both for weight loss and building muscle. Does this mean Insanity doesn’t offer any strength training? It’s only based on cardio, thus I will not gain muscle or tone up? I am little confused by this because from what I was told, Cardio only speeds up fat burning but does NOT actually burn fat also it can actually reduce muscle mass. Building muscle is what burns fat… Could you help me get a better understanding of this? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Julie, there is no strength traingin with weights in Insanity. There are push-ups in Insnaity, but it is a cardio based program. You will lose wieght with Insanity so the muscles will become more visible as you lose more fat.

Cardio burns calories. For example, an Insanity workout could burn 500 calores. If you did 6 Insanity workouts a week burning 500 calories a time you would burn an extra 3000 calories a week. Now if you couple the workouts with healthy eating you could burn more calories. A reduction of 3500 calories a week gives about a pound of fat loss. If your diet is good you should not have to worry much about muscle loss. Muscle loss can occur when not enough food is eaten. But, as long as you eat a healhty diet or follow the Insanity diet program this is not something that you need to worry about.

And for muscle burning fat. It is actually muscle burns more calories. An extra pound of lean muscle mass is said to burn about an extra 50 calories a day. So, if you put on a pound of muscle you would burn 350 more calories a week. -Hope that helps, Bethany

      1. Hi Bethany,
Oh wow, now everything makes sense. I was taking in so much information from the internet, but I was still confused and did not understand how everything works. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I really appreciate it.

After leaving you a post last night, I actually came across your other blog “Brazilian Butt Lift Workout vs Insanity”. I was very surprised by your results from BBL. I never thought BBL would be also a great weight loss program. My bottom (butt and legs) have always been problematic since young. Even when I was lighter few years ago, I would look disproportionate because my top was skinny compare to the bottom. My legs are composed of mostly ‘fat’, too. :/

So if I want to lose about 20lbs by end of the program and tone up especially in my legs, what program would you recommend? Will I get the results by just doing BBL? Or should I consider doing a hybrid of Insanity and BBL?

Also, can you please become my beachbody coach? I’ve been helped a lot already just by reading your blogs, and I would really appreciate if you could continue to help me during my journey. I made a teambeachbody account, but I was assigned to a random coach whom I haven’t heard back from. How can I change my coach? Thank you.

      2. Hi Julia, BBL does sound like the program for you. Can you lose 20lbs by the end, that depends on so many facotrs I can’t tell you. But it will defintily produce results as long as you stick with and also focus on your nutrition. I will send you an email about how to change coaches. -Bethany

  106. Hi Bethany!
I was so thankful to find a comparison done by a woman because by going through multiple workouts at my school with boys over the summer, I have found fitness can be different for men and women. I am a 5’8″ junior in high school. I am 143 pounds. This summer I weighed anything from 129-134 pounds, and I would very much like to be at that weight again. However, if I stayed my same weight but thinned and toned, I would be fine. I play basketball but often gain weight during the season. Usually i just lose it by running and lifting in the summer but this year, I want to do something different. I want to make a change in my body that will last me into college ( with work for upkeep). I really enjoy all areas of fitness, from weights to cardio to kickboxing to running to yoga. However, I am really busy with sports and FFA and my parents farm and I don’t have a ton of equipment. (My parents offered to buy me one of these for my birthday because they knew I would really like it) I am kind of leaning towards Insanity, but I have done some P90X at my school. I would just like to know what you think would be the better purchase.
    Thanks so much,
    Gwen

  107. Hey! I’m 171 pounds and about 5’4 or 5’5 (not sure haha) but I would really like to lose weight more so I’m sure Insaity is better but I have a hard time sticking to workout plans. I work a lot and I am in college so it gets hard- I usually work out in the morning because I’m a morning person.

    1. Hi Caitlyn, with everything you’ve told me, I think Insanity would be the better of the two for you. You won’t need to buy equipment, and you can do it in a relatively small area. Schedule the workouts into your morning – you’re lucky that you’re a morning person and can easily do this. If you put it into your physical schedule as part of your normal daily routine, you will be more apt to stick with the program. Exercising is something that you just have to do even when you don’t feel like it, because you know what?, after working out, you always feel better than you did before you worked out. Hope this helps – good luck!

  108. Hi, I’m 21 and i weigh 175 lbs. ive lost about 10 pounds in two months. I count calories and i usually go to the gym to use the cardio equipment. I want to build muscle but I’m trying to lose weight faster. This article was so helpful but i still cant decide which program would be better. Which do you think i should start with?

    1. Hi Chistina, my first thought when reading your comment was P90X was the better option. But, Insanity would help you lose weight faster, so maybe that would be best. Just be warned Insanity is pretty much all cardiovascular exercise and if you want to train with weights P90X would be the better choice. -Bethany

  109. Hi i am 23yrs old 5’1 and sadly 158lbs. I had two children but before then i was at 118lbs. I really want to lose weight and tighten my stomach and legs but especially my stomach. I forgot what i was like before kids haha cant even imagine my belly button before stretch marks :) i was wondering what program you think.is best for.me i want to just be able to work out and now worry about equipment because of my baby. Suggestions please and thank you!

    1. Hi Chille, Insanity for sure. Insanity requires no equipment and it sounds like you really want to focus on wieght loss, so that is another reason why Insanity sounds like the better option for you. With P90X you would need weights or a reistance aband and a place to pull-ups. Hope that helps, Bethany

  110. Hi! I’m 29, 5’5 and a depressing 206 lbs. I’m looking to lose 70-80 lbs. I used to be extremely fit. I lived for soccer playing year-a-round since I was 7. Then came college and I didn’t have the time to play as often as I wanted. Years passed and I stopped playing all together. With that came the lbs. About 4 years ago I was back to my ideal weight, but it was do in part to a lot to stress and not the way I should have lost it all. My eating habits are far from perfect. I’m looking to get back to where I was 4 years ago, but with muscle and lots of it. Then maybe I’ll feel comfortable enough to get back on the field again!

    1. Hi Nicole, I think P90X would be a great place for you to begin your weight loss journey. Not only will it help you lose the weight, it will help build lots of lean muscle mass. If you’re looking to get really sizeable muscle as your goal, you may also want to consider Body Beast. I personally love it, but I tend to like lifting as heavy as I can possibly go :) You will really need to take hold of your diet as this is also what will help you lose the weight and get back on the field again. I like P90X’s first and second phase of eating, but I wouldn’t follow phase 3 – it’s too many carbs unless you happen to be a finely tuned athlete with very low body fat percentage, which you will eventually get back to. Good luck, and if you have any questions along the way, please feel free to ask.

  111. Hi Bethany,
I am 5 ft 2 inches and fluctuate between 113 and 120. I’ve had 4 c- sections. My mid section is my major problem. What program will help me tone up and especially loose this stubborn stomach fat. Thank you.

    1. Hi Natalee, I think Insanity would be good for you, since it will help you get rid of that stubborn belly fat and tone up the rest of you. Just remember that after having c-sections, you could have some scar tissue below, so be cautious when doing any abdominal muscle exercises because you could have a weakened area. The good news is that you can make it stronger…just be aware and trust your body. If you ever feel any pain (pain…not discomfort), discontinue the moves that are hurting you and tone it back to a move that you can comfortably do. In time, you will get stronger.

  112. Hi Bethany. I’m so torn as to which to try – P90X or Insanity? I’m 45 yrs old, 5’5″ and weigh 138-140. I was late having kids and have a 4 1/2 yo and a 17 month old. I’ve lost all the “baby weight” but really want to be more toned. I love the thought of Insanity since I prefer cardio to strength training but I’m not sure that’ll give me the results I want. Not that I’d be disappointed if I lost a few more pounds :) I’ve been wearing a Fitbit and have discovered that my busy life working and being a mom results in more than 10,000 steps per day but it’s not helping my pooch! I know I need to add something – what are your thoughts? Thanks!

    1. HI Margaret, I think Insanity would be an excellent choice for you. It gives you a workout that tightens you up without having to lift any weights, because it uses your own weight as resistance. Insanity will no doubt help tone you up, lose any extra fat, leaving you with an athletic look you’ll love. Make sure to cut your calories and watch what you eat too – it’s not only exercise that will help you get the body you want, but also a healthy, reduced calorie diet. Good luck!

  113. Hi Bethany :) I’m 5’2 about 150 pounds and 22 years old. I haven’t really been the “work out” type but i really want to look great this summer. When I’ve worked out in the past (dieting and running) I’ve lost weight but didn’t like that I lost a lot of my thighs and still had a stomach. I been considering insanity since i really want to push myself and get results quick. I wanted to your opinion on which workout I should do. My main target is my stomach although id like to loose a little weight all over. Thank you ! :)

    1. Hi Kelly, Insnaity will push you that is for sure! As long as you have done the research. I believe the Insanity program to be the best program for quick and overall weight loss. -Bethany

  114. Latasha Heyward

Hi I wanted to know what you think is best for a mom I just has a c section 3 months ago and need to really tone my body before the summer I love carbs but also enjoy veggies and fruits the most what do u think is best

    1. Hi Latasha, assuming you’ve already checked with your doctor to make sure you’re ready for intense activity after major surgery, I think P90X would be a good choice for you. I think it would help you get a toned up look you want, while staying away from exercises that will aggravate your weakened area.

      1. Latasha Heyward

yes I have spoken to my doctor and I have four months to go just want to be prepared
        thanks alot

  115. Thanks for this write up!! I’ve just started doing my research and am interested in doing either program but would appreciate your opinion. I’m 26, 5’7 and 168 pounds definitely looking to lose weight and just be overall more toned.

Anyways, my main concern is that I’ve done a heart rate monitor test 2 years ago at my gym so they could see my different heart rate zones for weight loss etc. They noted that my heart rate goes up pretty high in cardio apparently higher than normal.. if that makes any sense. Nothing dangerous, it just works harder? haha! I just wonder if the intense cardio in Insanity is going to put me mostly at a super high heart rate, where fat burn for me is at a more medium heart rate I think around 145-155 zone. I’m leaning towards Insanity, although I do enjoy weight training probably more, but then again don’t have a lot of space or want to spend money on additional workout weights etc. This is why I’m still torn between the two. Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks :)

    1. Hi Vanessa, I wouldn’t worry about your heart rate too much. As you exercise more, your heart will get stronger, and you will be able to work out longer and harder.

As for a workout program…I think Focus T25 might be the right program to begin your weight loss journey with. It can easily accommodate any fitness level, and you don’t need a ton of space or equipment. Plus, T25 is intense, so when you build up your endurance (which won’t take long), you will still get an awesome workout.

You will eventually need weights during the second phase of the program, but you can always opt for resistance bands if you don’t want to invest the money in a set of weights. That being said, I am a firm believer in free weights, since it’s really a lifetime investment in your health…weights never go bad. And it is the weightlifting combined with the cardio and strength training moves that will get you an awesome body. Good luck!

  116. Hi Bethany,

I am 5’5″ and weigh about 136 lbs. for the past two years I’ve been very active, lifting weights three days a week, and running three days. But I’m bored and want something new. I’ve been looking at the P90x2 workout but now reading all these questions and responses….wondering about Insanity. My goal isn’t really to lose weight, but rather tone up and build muscle. I seem to carry a bit of weight in my stomach, so losing that would be amazing. What would you suggest? Thanks!

    1. HI Summer, if you want to keep with the weight lifting work do P90X. Insanity is purely a cardiovascular workout. P90X in my opinion is better for muscle tone than Insanity is also. -Bethany

  117. Hi Bethany! I’m 32 and really stomped on what workout to do. I used to be active up until 25. I danced competitively up until graduation so I was always lean and never had to workout hard to stay skinny. Now I’m still skinny but not toned p, lost my butt, and not working out has caught up to me. Not in a bad way but my clothes fit different and i tire easy. I feel it will be hard to get started because it’s been a while, but once I girt going i will be fine. I want to remain skinny/lean, but I warn a toned stomach, toned butt, and lean arms not big muscles. I do like the model look not the fitness model look. What would you recommend?

    1. Hi Danielle, if you don’t like the fitness model look, then I would not suggest either program for you, because that is exactly what you’ll end up with – especially if you don’t have much weight to lose. Instead, opt for Brazil Butt Lift, which was designed to give Leandro’s supermodel clients’ butt a lift, while maintaining their long, lean physiques they need for their line of work. Hope this helps!

      1. Thank you so much for the quick reply! I’m glad you have me another option. Will the Brazil Butt Lift tone your entire body? Even though I don’t need to lose, I need to tone what I have. I would still like to have some definition but not much. Will this workout do all that?

    2. What kind of results would the hip hop abs give? Or the turbo fire? I just want to make sure I choose the right workout. I want the lean look with definition just not bulky. I don’t need to Lise weight like I mentioned previously but I have it around my midsection and need to tone everything because I haven’t worked out in 8 years. Would p90x but to intense. Could you briefly describe the different workouts series and what it achieves or the bodies results. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and time!

  118. Hi! Im a 29 y/o mother of two. I have a 9 year old and 2 year old. I weigh about 160 and am 5’5. I am active as far as moving around all day, but I smoke and have a lot of bad habits (eating unhealthy). Prior to having my 2 year old I was a solid 123 and pretty active. But I plan to change this new me, however I did have a small back surgery in 2008 that still can cause me grief now and again, usually when im not active.. such as sitting around. I keep flip flopping from p90x to Insanity because the meal plan for insanity is easier, its less time and results are faster… just fearful over if my body can handle it. P90x has a harder meal plan for me which the diet is the hardest thing for me to follow because I am a terrible shopper and havent been cooking long enough so I get frustrated. What do you think I should do? Im ready to finally commit to something and I really would love to focus and do it right while shedsing my awful muffin top.

    1. Hi Jamie – pending your doctor has okayed you for intense exercise, I would just do what works for you. You don’t have to pair the diet with the actual program. If you like the diet better from Insanity, eat that way while following P90X. Truthfully, the P90X diet is not that great anyway. So, stick with what works best, and you can get your pre-second baby body back! I would suggest tracking your calories online at myfitnesspal.com, quit smoking!, eat lots of whole foods, stay away from sugary, high fat and processed foods, and drink lots of water. And if you ever feel pain in your back when doing any exercises, stop immediately. Whenever you come to that move again, modify the movement so you don’t feel any pain. Good luck!

  119. Hello, I still don’t know which program I should do. I’m 5’5, 153 pds. Been going to the gym but stopped that to do home workouts now. I am almost done with focus t25. I lose 6 pds and 9 inches on it so far. But i still have more fat to lose before I wanna gain muscles. I can feel my core muscles forming but I need to kill my thin layer of fat that’s over it. Which program do u recommend?

    1. HI Jennifer, congratulations on the job will done thus far! Since you are still in fat burning mode I would go with Insanity and when you are ready to build muscle move on to P90X. -Bethany

      1. I have another question Bethany. My knees are now hurting from focus t25 and I’m almost done with it. I have 2 more weeks left. Will insanity be the same for my knees?

  120. Hey. I a, 5’7 and currently 155. I was 135 for a long time and dropped to 125 for about a year. My eating habits were horrible and I developed an eating dissorder which is why I gained weight and where I’m at now. I would like to lose 20lbs while gaining lost muscle back. Which program would you recommend? I was doing kickboxing and cycling but haven’t in a few years. Right now I just walk on a treadmill.
    Thanks

I didn’t mention I gained the weight because it was suggested by my nutritionist that I wasn’t eating enough. So when I did start eating I gained quickly.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Stephanie, I would suggest starting with T25. You can lose the weight and build back the muscle as long as you stick to eating healthy and exercising. -Bethany

  121. Hello i am 21 and 5 3. I just had a baby and want some tone to my tummy and to lose the post pregnancy belly. I have looked into insanity p90x t25 and hip hop abs. I am looking for something that i can get results and have fun doing it. But i want to feel the burn to, i like knowing that i am working out. Please help me!

    1. Hi Brittany – congratulations on your new baby! Pending your doctor’s okay to begin a new exercise program, if you’re looking for something fun that doesn’t seem like a workout, definitely go for Hip Hop Abs. I think you’ll really love the dance-like moves, which will all help tone your tummy and lose that post-pregnancy belly. In fact it’s so much fun, you’ll forget you’re even working out even though you will definitely feel the burn :) Good luck!

      1. My son is 8 months now but the tummy still is not gone. And thank you so much. I used to do Zumba in high school. But i decided to stop and focus on school. I will definitely give hip hop abs a shot. Thank you so very much for your input. :-)

  122. Hi, thank you for this article it was very helpful! I was wondering what you would suggest for me as I am 5’2 and 125. I have always been between 110-115 and got sick and gained the weight. I would like to lose 10lbs and tone up.

    Thank you for any advice

  123. Hi Bethany,

I am a 5’11” 22 year old and am looking to lose some weight. I want to lose weight but also tone and work on my flexibility! I also work full time. I used to be a swimmer in high school and in college I gained a lot of weight, and grew about 3-4 inches! I am currently about 185-190lbs and am looking to get down to 160-150lbs.

    Which program would you recommend?

Thank you in advance for your help!

  124. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. I was having trouble deciding between the two and this really helped!!!

    Thank you!

  125. Hello, I am 21 years old, 5ft 3in. I am an active person and I do enjoy running (knees and ankles get sore at times though) I horse back ride, and i also use to do kickboxing. I do have the turbo Jam dvds and i enjoy doing them, i think they are really fun but i find they dont tone me which is what i am looking for. I was in an accident and broke 5 ribs about 7 months ago, and since then i have gained roughly 20-25lbs and i am now 161lbs. I would like to get down to 125lbs, but I am not overly concerned with the scale number becaue I do understand that muscle weighs more then fat. I am more interested in looking healthy, feeling healthy and being able to feel comfortable in a bathing suit and fitting comfortably into my jeans again. I am stuck on which one to do! My boyfriend is also looking to loose some weight and get tonned. He is 23 and roughly 220lbs. He enjoys doing sports for working out but we live in a small town where stuff like that is limited. He is not a fan of just running he thinks it is boring. He use to go to the gym and did weight training and he enjoyed the results that he was seeing, his schedule just was not lining up at the time. Space is not an issue we have a large area to do these workouts in, we are just stuck on which one will benifit us the most?
    Thanks :)

    1. Hi Stephanie, with everything you told me, I think P90X would be a great program for both of you to follow. It will not only help you both lose weight and get toned, but also get you healthy and feeling fitter and better than ever. You are going to look GREAT in a bathing suit by the time you’re done and may even need to go down another size in your jeans…nevermind fitting into your old pairs! Plus, your boyfriend will really like that it’s a lot of weightlifting. Good luck!

  126. Hello Bethany!

Please help, I am 119lbs, 25 and I actually want to gain weight (muscle mass, tone and sculpt my thighs, buttocks and arms). I am looking to gain about 10 pounds give or take. I have a hard time keeping weight on and I have been petite most of my life. I am 5ft 4in and very busy and stressful schedule with graduate school, internship and a part time job, so having a workout plan that’s time friendly 30mins-1 hour would also be great. Generally a lot of the workout plans that I have seen are geared towards losing weight rather than gaining healthy weight. Please advise me as to which one of these would be the better alternative for my situation! Thank you in advance for you continued support!

P.S: Please feel free to share if you know of any other workout plans that would better fit the bill for my situation. Also I have Acid reflux which sometimes interferes with exercising and can be a pain. Thanks again! :)

    1. Hi Bri – I would start looking at how much you’re eating first. I know how hard it is to keep on weight when things are stressful and very busy, so I would suggest adding 500 calories to the amount you’re already eating per day, and see if that helps you keep weight on. As for workouts, it’s not so much the program (any of these programs will help you lose weight), but really how much you’re eating. If you eat enough while doing either program, you will gain weight – healthy, lean muscle mass weight, but weight nonetheless. P90X will give you a more defined, athletic look, while Insanity will slender you down and get you ripped. If you’re really crunched on time, you can also get a really great body with Focus T25 – it’s only 25 minutes each day, five days a week, which may fit more easily into your already hectic schedule. I hope that helps, but if you do have any other questions, please feel free to ask. As for the acid reflux, I’m sure you already know, but try to stick with lower fat, easier to digest foods that aren’t too acidic – also stay clear of fast and processed foods. Good luck!

  127. Brittney Johnston

Hi! Im so glad I found this review. I have P90x and Insanity at my disposal and I did half of Insanity last year and lost a lost of weight quick. I gained 15 pounds since then and I would like to lose 10-15 pounds now but I want to build muscle where Insanity didnt help me build any muscle I just got really skinny. My question is will P90x help me lose the weight I want to lose while building the muscle or should I do Insanity first to lose the weight?

    1. Hi Brittney – I’d just do P90X – it will help you lose the 15lbs, while at the same time, building the lean muscle mass you want. I wouldn’t follow the phase 3 diet though – it’s way too high in carbs especially when you’re still trying to shed fat. I would suggest you follow phase 2 for the extra month. I hope that helps – good luck!

  128. Hi Bethany. Your answers have been so helpful! I am trying to determine which program would be best for me and my fiancé. We are both 24 years old and former athletes who have sadly let ourselves go. He is 5’5 at 215 and I am 5’3 at 265. I have significantly more weight to lose than him. We want to do a program together for extra support and motivation. We both want to shed fat and get toned (but muscle growth is important to him) Which one would be best for both of us? Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Jordan – I think Insanity would be a great choice for you guys, because of the two, it’s a lot easier to do together. Having each other to keep yourselves motivated will be really helpful – especially when you’re trying to eat good too. Insanity will help you shed fat and get ripped, giving him the muscular look he wants. And if you find it too tough, just do the workouts at your own pace – you will build up your endurance day to day, week to week, so just give every workout your all and eat a healthy, reduced calorie diet rich in whole foods. In no time, you’ll be going through the workouts thinking how far you’ve come since your first workout. Good luck! If you have any questions along the way, please let me know.

  129. Hello, i am 24, 5’3, and now, im at 260, but last month i was 239. I never been big, but my weight started picking up about 2 1/2 yrs ago. I feel so out of shape, and im not happy with my appearance. So in 2012, i had p90x, and started to see results in less than 2weeks. But i stopped for a reason i dont remember. So now i want to change up, and have a nice body by the summer. I feel like im ready for a change now. i get tired just by going up a few flight of stairs. So which one would u recommend for me?

    1. Hi dede – don’t be too hard on yourself…it happens. The most important thing is that you’ve decided to do something about it – that’s terrific. With what you’ve told me about your current fitness level, have you ever considered Focus T25? It will give you awesome results (fast weight loss and quick muscle toning), but in the beginning, it’s a lot easier to tone down to your current fitness level than P90X or Insanity. However if you’re totally not interested, I would suggest Insanity. It will get you the weight loss you’re looking for, while toning you up – and you can do it more at your own pace than P90X. Good luck – please let me know if you have any other questions.

  130. I have P90X but I always seem to have problems commiting to the routine. I have to travel once a month for military and I cant take my required equipment with me. I am afraid to use the pull up bar because even with it secured in the wall it doesn’t feel secure. I tried using the bands on my bar but it seems a waste because even using the highest resistance band I could never get far enough from the bar to cause resistance because its in a narrow hallway (most of the doors in my house was designed for a wheel chair and are wider than normal so the bar wont work on any other door.) My main goal right know is to increase the number of sit ups, push ups, and have a better run time. (maybe loose weight too.) working on my cardio in insanity will help with the run but will it help me with the sit ups and push ups?

    1. Hi Brandy – with everything you’ve told me, I would just to Insanity. You don’t need any equipment, and it will get you noticeable stronger…there are lots of push-up variations and core moves, which should all help with your sit-ups and push-ups. Plus, any type of cardio will help with your running, although Insanity isn’t focused too heavily on legs. You may need to add your own squats and lunges if you’re feeling like your legs aren’t strong enough while running. And Insanity will definitely help you lose weight too :) Just make sure to reduce your daily intake of calories and eat a well-rounded diet. Good luck – let me know if you have any other questions.

  131. Hi Bethany — thanks for a great post and for answering comments so thoroughly! I’m having the same question about which workout…I’m 40 years old, 5 foot 8, and about 170 pounds. I was an athlete in my younger years and still have that nice muscle base…so my ideal weight for my height and build is about 135 (below that I just look too skinny!). I haven’t seen that number in about a decade (I tend to oscillate between about 155 and 175)! I do remain fairly active through my job and semi-regular exercise (cycling, running, hiking, yoga and some cardio tapes like Jillian and Tae Bo) so definitely not a beginner…but not in outstanding shape either. I have a pretty demanding job but can allow myself 1 to 2 hours of exercise per day most days (I do need/want yoga to be part of that for all sorts of reasons but that is only about 30 minutes/day). Ultimately what I want is to both lose weight (30-35 pounds or so) and to tone up the muscle base that I already have…so definition rather than more bulk. And just as important, if not more, I want to be fit and gain some strength. I do know the importance of strength training though, especially at my age, and so having that element as well seems like a good idea (although I can do strength training on the side if necessary). The only negative is that I have some trouble with my lower back…but losing weight and remaining active all help that problem (though certain exercises aggravates the problem at times–but I’m careful to note that and modify if necessary). Given these goals, I feel as if Insanity would be the best workout based on most of what I have read but would love your opinion. Thanks in advance and merry christmas!

    1. Hi Rachel – with what you’ve written in exceptional detail (thank you!), I do think Insanity would be the better option for you. The workouts will help you get rid of the excess fat with its plyometrics style workouts and tone up the muscle you have underneath without building a ton of added mass. I don’t think you should add in any other strength training workouts…you really shouldn’t need it since Insanity uses body weight exercises to build and tone muscle. Insanity should also help with your back pain, because there is a ton of core work, but definitely modify moves if you’re feeling any bad pain. Just be sure to always exercise at your own pace and pause the workout or walk it out when you need to. Yoga will be a great addition to the workouts to help maintain your flexibility and aid and/or prevent muscle soreness. Good luck!

  132. Hi, I would like to know wich one of these is the best to lose the pregnancy weight. I’m curently 8 month pregnant and I’ve gain more weight than I would like to admit (50 lbs). Also, do you know when it would be safe to start one of these programs after birth?

    1. Hi Cindy, I would consider starting to lose the baby weight with Focus T25 – it’s shorter in length each day (leaving you more time with your little bundle of joy!) and very easy to tailor to your current fitness level. Plus, it gives you great results. It really tones you up from head to toe, which will help you lose the weight faster. But you need to be careful not to rush into hard core exercise after giving birth, because your body has just been through a lot and will need some time to heal.

It is most often suggested to wait at least six weeks before beginning any kind of intense exercise after giving birth to promote healing and ensure your body is back to normal. At your six-week postpartum check-up, your doctor will be able to give you the official okay to start Focus T25. In that time, think low impact exercise right after birth like short, easy walks. I hope this helps, but if you do have any other questions, please let me know. Good luck, and congratulations!

  133. Thank you for all of this wonderful information and pictures!
I am athletic- danced with many companies, yoga instructor and then had 3 kids. I have been doing Tae Bo at home for almost 2 years. I love it but I need a change. I have some good muscle definition, but I have gained some stomach fat that I would like to move and work my upper abs. Arms, well they can never be big enough! I am 5’6″ and 120, so I don’t want to loose weight but I need a harder workout for a challenge and I think it is time for a change. Both of these programs seem like a good next step but I am perplexed about just what to do. I have some great results from Tae Bo, but I think I am stagnating!
Thank you so much for your time.

    1. Hi Kryan – I think it’s a great idea to switch things up if you feel like you’ve hit a plateau. With what you’ve told me, I would suggest trying Insanity. It’s a great core workout, which really targets all areas of your abdomen. It is also an awesome cardio workout, so you will lose any and all unwanted body fat by the end – including your pesky stomach fat :) I really think you’ll enjoy the change of pace from TaeBo, because it will offer your body and your mind new challenges that will keep you excited about your workouts and help you make forward progress again. Good luck – if you have any questions along the way, please ask!

      1. A big THANK YOU! I am so glad you mentioned new challenges for my mind as well. I am excited to start soon!

  134. Thanks for the article. I’m 50, peri-menopausal (ugh), and am 5’10” and 185 lbs this morning. It’s been a stressful year with family stuff, and I’ve added 7 pounds to my usual 178 (which is still not acceptable). Anyway, I’d like to get to 160. I carry weight in my abdomen and need to get rid of fat. I’m not obsessed with a number, but need to get some fat off and tone up. I have a good shape if I can get my gut taken care of. I have time to work out, if I can stay motivated. I love to go walking outside (weather is always nice here in San Diego). I also like doing weights, but have to modify for a crummy left knee (no surgery), and lower back issues. I think my biggest culprit is my eating; gotta cut out the sugar. Anyway, what would your suggestion be for me with regards to these two programs or others? Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Mom of 5 – with all you’ve said, I actually think Focus T25 would be a great place for you to begin your fitness journey. It offers a low impact version of every single exercise (just keep your eye on Tania!), which will help save your left knee and your back. It also is just 25 minutes a day to begin with, which will be easier to stick with and still allow you to go for walks outdoors when you feel like it. As more of the weight comes off your stomach and you strengthen your core, your back should start feeling much better. This program is really an overall body toner, so it should keep your already good shape and get rid of the excess fat. After you finish the program, I’d see where you’re at image-wise (scales are really not always the best indicators of perfection!) and how your body’s feeling – then, you can see which program you think you’re interested in doing next.

Also regarding your eating habits, you do have to commit to a healthier diet unless it’s impossible to get the results you want. The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to stick with T25’s diet although the five ingredient meals are VERY easy to follow! My advice: don’t starve yourself and don’t deprive yourself – if you love chocolate, keep some dark chocolate in the house, and if you’re an ice cream lover, store some frozen berries and non-fat plain yogurt, and mix them together for an icy cool treat. You just have to be a little creative when you’re not eating the regular processed or refined sugar foods you’re used to. The good news is that the sugars in fresh fruits are very sweet and should satisfy your cravings. And make sure you’re eating enough calories. If you’re starving to death, you’re not going to be able to keep away from the junk food…trust me. Just be sure to always have cut up veggies or fruits easily accessible for when you need a quick fix. It takes a little bit of time to get used to…the first week is always the toughest, but after having five children, this should be a cinch for you :)

      1. Bethany, thank you so very much for taking the time to answer my questions, and to do so so extensively! Thank you thank you! I’m looking forward to getting back in shape!

  135. Hi there!
Thank you for a wonderful and honest written article. I am trying to decide between these two programs and would love your opinion. I am 5’3” and weigh 134. I am very active, I love turbo kick 5 days a week and lift and love to run but after my last race my knees haven’t been allowing me to run more than 3 miles :( I am looking to loose about 12 pounds and just overall tone up my body. Which do you recommend? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Haileigh, P90X sounds perfect for you. The high-impact moves in Insanity can be hard on the knees and you sound like you need to give them a rest. P90X is also in my opinion better for overall body toning than Insanity. Hope that helps, Bethany.

  136. Hi there!
I just wanted to say your article was really helpful. As a teenage girl, I would love to have a toned, and flat stomach. I’m currently 5’2 and 100 lbs so I don’t want to lose too much weight but just get into shape! I would really appreciate your opinion of which program I should get!
    Thanks!

Also I’m not sure if this is helpful or not but I thought I would just let you know I would consider myself an active person for I run everyday throughout the summer and through the fall. So this exercise is more to keep in shape to start running again and building up more endurance, while again having a toned stomach! Thanks again!!

    1. Hi Mariah – first of all, thank you for your compliments…I am glad you found the article helpful! The truth is that Insanity and P90X were designed for adults 18 and over, so not knowing exactly how old you are, I really can’t give you any sound advice without a heavy feeling in my heart.

These workouts are very intense and the diets are calorie restricted, which aren’t a good idea for a still-growing body. I would suggest trying something a little less intense :) You can even talk to your doctor about a safe exercise program to do in the winter or see if they think following one of these programs is safe for your age. Or if you have access to a treadmill, you can always keep up the running in the winter and do some core exercises like planks and crunches to get your abs flat – yoga and pilates videos are amazing for a strong core. I hope this helps, but if you do have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck!

  137. Im 53 year old female, would like to buy p90x and insanity to work through. 5’2″ and 176 lbs.. Love being physically active but haven’t ever really exercised… Twenty years ago, used to put my exercise bike under my weight machine, lol.. Best shape i was ever in :-) advice for getting back at it?

    1. Hi CeeTee! First of all, congratulations on your decision to get back into it – that is the MOST important decision you will ever make for the betterment of your health. As for doing P90X or Insanity, both are very difficult, but you can always tone them down to suit your current fitness level. Have you ever considered Focus T25? It’s just 25 minutes a day, which may not be a bad place to begin with after being away for so long – plus, it’s really tough and will literally kick your butt, thighs, back, and every other area of your body! My thighs never looked so cut until I did T25, however if you do have your heart set on Insanity or P90X (pending your doctor’s okay for intense exercise!), I would definitely suggest P90X for you, since it sounds like you enjoy lifting weights :) Just don’t do the moves as quickly as they do and pause as often as needed. Good luck! If you have any questions along the way, never be afraid to ask.

  138. Hi! I’m 28, 5’4″ and 225 lbs. I’m a single mother working two jobs so I don’t have a lot of time for working out, but I’d like to find something I can squeeze in between jobs that doesn’t require many extra purchases. I’d like to lose weight and to be able to run around and play with my son at the park without getting exhausted. What would you recommend?

      1. This looks like exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much- I’m so glad I found your thread! I have my ten year reunion next year, and a trip to disney world the year after, and I want to start preparing now.

  139. HI there!

Ok, so I am trying to decide between a new gym membership, buying an elliptical or getting a good DVD series. I was in really good shape 10 years ago; however, I got married, comfortable, and have had 2 children and developed horrible eating habits and now having a really hard time finding time to exercise. I weigh 198 and am 5’5″ and have high blood pressure that I take medication for. I have been yo yo dieting and yo yo exercising for the last 10 years, so I’m not totally out of shape, but close! So would you recommend the P90x, Insanity or something else for me to start my journey back to 135 and size 8!?

    1. Hi Melody – congratulations on your decision to get healthy and fit…just this little decision you’ve made will make a world of difference in your life and your children’s! Because you’ve been yo-yo dieting and haven’t religiously exercised, I really think BBL would be a great place to start. It’s less intense than P90X or Insanity, and the diet is easier to adjust to. I would follow the Classic schedule to optimize weight loss.

Another alternative is Focus T25. I only suggest this, because it’s 25 minutes a day to begin with, which is very easy to get yourself into the habit of doing and leaves you with no excuse not to do it at the end of the day…25 minutes is easy to fit into any schedule! It’s also very easy to tone down.

When you begin to exercise religiously and eat healthier, you won’t need your blood pressure meds any longer. So there is more incentive for you to stick with the program than just losing weight – it’s your health. Use that as motivation to stick with it, and you’ll see yourself looking lean and toned up in no time. You have two wonderful reasons to live a long, healthy life for, so go for it :) I hope this helps, but if you do have other questions along the way, please ask. Good luck!

  140. Thanks for writing this article! I am looking to get back into shape, I would like to lose about 10 pounds. I was,at that weight about two yea ago, and achieved that goal after a lot of hard work in the gym. My biggest problem area is my bottom half. I want to tighten and tone muscles. Any advice would be appreciated!!

  141. I’m a new mother and enjoy running on the weekends.
Looking for a plan that I can enjoy weekly and help me tone and loose about 10-15 lbs.
Please let me know which you recommend.
    Thanks, M

    1. Hi Mikala, either Insanity or P90X would help you reach your goal weight while toning. But, since you are a new mother I would suggest Insanity, the workouts are not as long so you will have more time to sleep!

  142. Hello Dear,
THANKS a lot for your article, seriously it motivated again to try either of these 2 program; Bur, again I am so confused :(

I am 26, 5’2″, weight 154 lbs. Have to loose 22 to 33 lbs. Actually in 2007-2010, I was at same condition, But in 2011-2012, I had lost 16 lbs just by eating clean and doing some JM workouts, BUT there was no visible change in body, i.e. no inches lost. After getting job last December, I have gained all those lbs, back to square one. I Eat clean (at least try 100%) and doing Tae-Bo, but sometimes I get bored with it although I alternate different tae-bo videoes. .

I now want total body transformation, I can work hard, I know that, may be it will take some time but I can definitely can. I want to loose all those 22-33 lbs and also some visible changes/shedding some inches; Not like last time, I lost weights, but was not noticeable for any before/after pic).

I will be very much grateful if you suggest me which one will be better for me P90X or Insanity. Or should I stick to Tae-Bo.

    Thank you… :)

    1. Hi Shopno, I know exactly how you feel. Your story is very similar to mine.

While I do like Tae-Bo(it’s fun) I think you would be better giving the Insanity workout a try! With Insanity you will work hard and you will push yourself, this sounds like what you want. With the Insanity workout you can surely lose 22-33 pounds as long as you do the program and follow the Insanity diet or something similar!

  143. Hi there :-)!

Thanks for writing this article! I am 20 years old and have always been pretty sportive. Now, as I have been getting lazy a bit during the last months, I noticed that I put on some weight and I would like to get in better shape again. Currently, I weigh 115 lbs at a body size of 5 foot 2. Ideally, I would like to lose about 15 pounds and tone my body up a bit.. Nevertheless I would not like to have too strong arm muscles, like many women seemingly resulted to have after P90X. Also, I would like to actually get fit – do you think that these programs are focussed mainly on external results? Either way, it would help me loads, if you could tell me, which program you would recommend for me.
    Tons of thanks in advance!!

    1. Hi Maria, great question!!! The results you can receive with either program are not only external, you will feel better inside as well as look better on the outside! That being said, I think the Insanity program would be better for you if you are more interested in weight loss. -Bethany

  144. Hi there! I’m 25 and I’m 5’9, female, and around 315lbs. I’m starting back at the gym Monday and I usually go 5 times a week. I want to lose a lot of weight but not have flabby or saggy skin. I’m in good health other than my weight. I’ve been like this since I was young. Any advise on which program would work best for me?

    1. Hi Lindsey, congratulations on your decision to get fit! Losing weight by doing cardio activity and strength training without crash dieting will give you gradual and sustainable weight loss sans the leftover loose skin. It’s when you focus too much on cardio and don’t include strength training or crash diet that you tend to get the loose skin.

As for programs, I think Focus T25 would be a great place for you to start – there are modified moves throughout to adjust to your current fitness level, and the diet is reasonable. Best part – it’s just 25 minutes a day, which is great for when you’re first starting out any at-home workout program. Just be sure not to cut your calories too much or overdo it with the exercising. I think just doing the T25 workout would be a good place for you to start, see where you’re at after 60 days – whether you want to add in gym days after your first 60 days is up to you, but Focus T25 was designed to help you lose weight fast – it is not easy. You can read My Focus T25 Review if you’d like to learn more. Good luck, and if you have any questions along the way, please ask :)

      1. I am in the same boat. Extremely over weight and want to loose weight. I just completed 21 day fix and lost 30 lbs! But I am now borderline 300 and want to commit to a more demanding workout than 30 min. So when push comes to shove, P90x or Insanity? Thank you :)

      2. Hi Athena, Congrats on the weight loss. Either program really, if you just want hardocre cadrio then Insanity, P90X if you want to do some weight training too. -Bethany

  145. I used to be a hard core ballerina and then became a teacher. I am 5’7″. With stress and other factors, I lost my muscle tone and went up to 150. I used to bounce around between 125 to 135, and still look great. I am currently 140. I’d like to tone my flabby arms, lift my butt, flatten my stomach, narrow my waistline (now 29 inches, want to get to at least 26) before my wedding. I’m 25, and my knees don’t do very well with running. What program do you think I should go with?

    1. Hi Amanda, with your background and your goals I would recommend P90X for you. I think you would really enjoy the workouts as a lot of the moves are body weight exercises. Also Insanity can be hard on the knees.

When is your wedding? And congratulations!

      1. Hi Bethany! I have thought about doing P90x or insanity for a while now but never went through with either. I just graduated high school and while I was very sporty in high school I have found myself being slightly more lazy because I don’t have sport practices to help me up and moving. I go running occasionally but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything. I am 5’4″ and weight 137 pounds. I have looked back at photos from my freshman year of high school and can very easily tell I’ve gained weight. I tried on my homecoming dress and could barely get it up let alone zip it.. I would like to fit in that dress again because I haven’t gotten taller just bigger and I was so much happier with my weight and physical appearance back then. I want to be tone and fit but weight loss is my primary goal. Do you think P90x or insanity would be better for me?
        Thank you!!

      2. Hi Haylie, either program can help you reach your goals, if weight loss is what you are more concerened with then Insanity might have a slight edge over P90X. But, the best program is one you are going to stck with and only you can choose which one you think you would enjoy more. -Bethany

      3. Hi i am 21 i am 5’6 weighing 157 :/ i was doing good before lost 25 to 20 lbs after a bunch of things happened i stopped working out and gained it all back :/ so i bought the insanity workout but im worried its too many carbs my goal is to lose 30 lbs and fast what should i do? Stick with the meal plan in my calorie range or cut of the carbs for the evening i know carbs is a must after working out but idk how much i should take in i dont want to gain weight please help Xo

      4. Hi Tao, With the Insanity series the higher carbs are meant to give you more energy for the workouts. I know when I missed a carb block I did not have as much energy with MAX:30. I would stick to how the the diet is laid out, the low carb diets do work, but most people believe in the health and fitness industry those diets work best for people who are sedentary. Weight gain is caused by excess calories not carbs if that makes you feel better. Bethany

      5. Hello I am a mom of 4. 32 yrs. 5’7. I’ve been doing chalean extreme for a year now. I’m seeing toning but I’ve just lost 10 lbs. That was a few months ago. I’ve plateaued. I’m at 151. My goal is 145 but final goal is 135’ish. I’m a size 10 but want a 6. I have most of Chalenes workouts minus piyo. A friend of mine is letting me borrow p90x. I want to be toned but lose weight at the same time. I use the 21 day fix containers but use the healthy foods that I have. Advice?

      6. Hi Cathy, it definitely sounds like you’ve plateaued. However, you should be really proud of your 10lbs lost so far – that’s really wonderful! As for exercise, try following P90X to change things up a little. It may be just what your body needs to start burning fat again. Anytime you tone up by doing cardio and strength training activities, you will lose weight.

And I would not only switch up your exercise program, I would also take a look at your calorie intake. Now that you’re 151lbs, you should be eating 1500-1600 calories each day. When you go below 150lbs, shoot for 1400-1500 calories. I do like the 21 Day Fix containers, because they help you eat controlled portions of healthy foods. You can definitely be a size 6…just stick with it and keep on pushing your hardest each and every workout. Good luck! – Bethany
