The long-awaited sequel to the original at-home workout that changed the world is here. That’s why I’m sharing the P90X Generation Next equipment you need, as well as some of the optional but also nice to have gym equipment.
More than 20 years ago, the original P90X used a lot of equipment for an at-home workout program. This made it difficult to do for many people who didn’t have these items lying around. The good news is that times have changed.
With the relaunch of P90X aka P90X Generation Next by Waz Ashayer, the workout program still requires some equipment, but I think people are more likely to be better prepared for this program than people were back when home workouts were brand new.
As a little bonus, I’ve also included my updated P90X Generation Next workout tracker printable to help you keep track of your workouts. I find it’s very motivating to check off those boxes daily and watch yourself progress from day one until day ninety-one.

What is Different in P90X Next Gen?
The training style in the new P90X program is not the same as the original, but some of the equipment remains the same. Tony Horton was a ‘gym bro” trainer in the original P90X and Waz comes from a functional fitness/athletic background with a focus on longevity.
Reducing the risk of injury and improving your body’s ability to recover more quickly from these intense workouts is a major theme in Next Gen, which is why I am excited to try it. As I get older, I appreciate workout programs like this more and more.
What Equipment is Essential for P90X Generation Next
The list of equipment you need to effectively do the P90X Generation Next workout program is different from the original.
Here is the required equipment list for P90X Generation Next:
- Different size dumbbells: Light, medium, and heavy dumbbells will give a good start for the program. They use this set of adjustable dumbbells from Core Fitness in the P90X Generation Next workouts that allow you to change the weight by rotating the handles. I like to have a set from 5 lbs to 40 lbs because you’ll be amazed at how quickly you progress.
- An adjustable weight bench: An adjustable bench(again, this is a link to the same bench they use in the videos) like they use in the workouts lets you target muscles from different angles, like your upper pecs or lower abs, for a more balanced workout and gives you a more effective workout.
- Foam roller: As you can probably tell from the images(my 10+ year old roller), I use a foam roller – a lot. The Grid foam roller has a unique design that allows for different amounts of pressure depending on what and how tight the muscle group is you’re trying to loosen up. You can use any foam roller for the program. if you are interested in a premium vibrating foam here is the link to the Vyper 3 foam roller that they use in the P90X Generation Next myofascial release workout.
- Ball: They don’t tell you this before starting the workout but you also need a ball for the myofascial release workouts, any hard ball about he size of baseball will work. It is often recommended to use a lacrosse balls.
It’s a pretty short list of only three pieces of workout equipment for a program that promises extreme transformations just like the original.
Optional Equipment for P90X Generation Next
Again this list optional equipment list is directly from the company website, I’ll share my thoughts in another section.
- Pull-up bar: Waz will show you alternate exercises you can do with dumbbells if you don’t have a pull-up bar.
- Pull-up bar assist: The pull up assist is a unique piece of equipment that allows you to lessen your bodyweight and continue with good chin-up form.
- Mat: To me, a yoga mat should be mandatory, especially when doing floor exercises and a lot of the lateral movements you will want a good grippy surface to exercise on.
My thoughts are this: the pull up bar is going to allow you to do bodyweight exercises. This recruits and works more muscle groups than a dumbbell ever will.
The pull-bar assist is great if you want to get the full range motion of the exercises, but putting your feet up on a bench or chair under you can also work by reducing your bodyweight if you’re on a budget.
Where to Find the P90X Generation Next Workouts
BODi has a new P90X subscription for access to the entire collection of P90X programs for. Here you will be able to access all of the P90X Generation Next workouts, along with other P90X programs and materials like workout calendars, diet plans, guides all in digital format(no dvds!). I cover this all in detail on my P90X Generation Next review.
What I’ll Be Using for Equipment
I am going to be following this program to the best of my ability, like you should. But since I do not have an adjustable weight bench at the moment, I will use an exercise ball, chair, step, or the floor to modify when necessary.
I do have a pull-up bar, but I can’t do a pull-up yet, so I’ll either follow the dumbbell version until I’m strong enough or get assistance with a chair to help me out. I also have a foam roller, dumbbells, and the same Yoga mat I tried the original P90X with. So sometimes investing in good gym equipment is worth it, because you’ll have it for years/.
Honestly, whatever you have I think you will be able to make the program work even if you need to modify on your own.
Recommended Equipment for Greater Workout Recovery

I’m guessing right now, but the more I learn about Waz and his training style, the more I like him. A big theme of his work is functional athletic performance and longevity with a touch of bio-hacking. This helps workouts not feel so bad, especially in the beginning when you’re first starting out. It also means once you start working out more intensely, you’ll never be overly sore.
Here’s a list of equipment recommended for faster workout recovery from me that are also just really good for your body:
- Massage gun: This tool allows you to do percussive therapy at home. The rapid pulsing of the Hypervolt massage gun improves circulation by boosting blood flow, allowing the muscles to remove lactic acid quicker.
One more tip for recovery: If you haven’t worked out in a while, use very light or no weight until you feel comfortable with the moves – especially for week one. Then you can either continue to week 2 with light weights at first or repeat week 1 with weights. It’s up to you. This way you can get used to the moves you’re doing and get the correct exercise form down, reducing your risk of injury.
