INSANITY vs P90X: A Comparison for Women by a Woman

insanity-vs-p90x
A guide to choosing between two of the top at home workout programs of all time.

The question I kept on asking myself before trying to decide between the INSANITY and P90X workout programs was, “oh my gosh, when did I get so fat?!” I knew it made my heart race to walk up a few flights of stairs, but when did I gain nearly thirty pounds?!

Yes, I was over 150 lbs when I made the decision to get back in shape again, so I wouldn’t be self-conscious about getting in a bathing suit. This is when I began comparing INSANITY vs P90X. I saw enough of the infomercials on TV, so I was intrigued.

As a woman, my goals were to lose weight and tone up without getting a professional bodybuilder look. Unfortunately, most of the real reviews I was able to find online about either program were written by men. My problem with that was men lose fat quicker than women, and men tend to like different types of workouts than women.

Anyways, below is my comparison of the top two at-home workout programs from a woman’s perspective.

And this is post is a comparison with the original P90X, I’d suggest reading my P90X Generation Next review which came out in 2026 befroe deciding whihc program is the best for you.

The Two Key Differences Between INSANITY and P90X

If I were to answer the questions, “What is P90X?” and “What is INSANITY?” in one sentence answers, this is what I would say this:

INSANITY is a 60-day intense workout program that is primarily a weight loss program where the workouts are performed 6 times a week and are 30-45 minute in length.

P90X is a 90-day total body workout program that consists of weight training workouts, cardiovascular exercise, and Yoga to help you not only lose weight, but also build lean muscle.

Being an art major(grad), I have always found it easier to take in information when presented visually, so  I figured my chart comparing INSANITY vs P90X would be an easy way for you to see key differences between the programs and which is better at achieving which result:

What Are the P90X and INSANITY Workouts Like?

The INSANITY workout program is based on something known as “Max Interval Training”, which is long-bursts of full blown cardiovascular exercise followed by shorter and lower intensity intervals of cardiovascular exercise. All of the INSANITY workouts will get your heart rate up and leave you pretty much drenched in sweat.

P90X bases its workouts around a training principle known as “muscle confusion”. The theory behind this principle is that, when you change up exercise order, workout order and even your diet, you don’t allow the body enough time to adapt to the training. This keeps you always moving forward with your health and fitness and not plateauing.

How the Workouts are Different

INSANITY workouts are high-intensity cardiovacular workouts that are not dance orienteted. You will be left in a puddle of sweat after these workouts from the plyometric moves that they incorporate with other physically demanding body weight only movements. Insanity workouts are done 6 times a week with no weights.

P90X workouts are also done six times a week. The program features three days of weight training, a plyometric workout, Kenpo(kickboxing) workout, and sweat inducing Yoga workout. The workouts are cycled in three week phases so you will not get bored with the workouts.

How the Diets Differ

The INSANITY diet plan is an easy-to-follow diet where you eat 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. This diet is well-balanced and easy to stick with. Everything is detailed in the INSANITY diet plan, which includes a step-by-step guide to calculating your calories and a bunch of easy-to-follow recipes that won’t keep you in the kitchen all day.

The P90X diet is more complicated than the INSANITY diet. The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase nutrition plan. In phase 1 of the P90X diet, which is called the Fat-Shredder phase, you eat a diet high in protein, low in fat, and low in carbohydrates. During the first phase of the P90X diet, people often notice significant loss of energy from the lower carbohydrates, but also significant weight loss. The second phase of the P90X diet is called the Energy Booster and is similar to the Insanity diet of 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. The third phase of the P90X diet is called the Endurance Maximizer and is nicknamed an athletic diet for this reason: unless you have extremely low body-fat levels, you should avoid this phase of the diet entirely and stick to the Energy Booster phase or you’ll likely add unwanted body fat.

What Equipment You Need for P90X or INSANITY

p90x-and-insanity-equipment
At the minimum you would need a resistance band to do the P90X workouts. Insanity requires no equipment, it use only bodyweight based exercises.

What I like most about the INSANITY workout program is the fact that it requires no workout equipment. This means I can just move my coffee table to the side, throw in a DVD, and start working out it minutes. You may want to add a heart-rate monitor to your workouts to make sure you stay in your target heart range.

On the other end of the spectrum, P90X  requires lots of equipment if you want to get the most out of the program. While it is recommended you have at least resistance bands and a yoga mat to do P90X, you will really need a few more pieces of equipment. Pull-ups and chin-up variations are major exercises in P90X, which means you’ll need a chin-up bar, plus likely a chair to help give you a boost until you’re strong enough. You’ll also want dumbbells up to thirty pounds, push-up bars, a yoga block, and a heart rate monitor is always very handy to have. The only good thing is that weights up to thirty pounds, yoga mat and heart rate monitor are something you will always be able to use down the road, so think of them as more of an investment in your health overall.

P90X vs  INSANITY  – Which Program is Harder?

For one reason or another, people always want to know which program is harder when comparing Insanity to P9oX. I can tell you this: both programs are extremely difficult, and both programs if followed properly are extremely rewarding. They will whip you into shape in 60 or 90 days and start you on track to a new and healthier lifestyle. However after trying both programs, I believe INSANITY is the harder of the two programs if you were to go all out with either.

Price Point – Where to Get p90X or INSANITY for the Lowest Prices

The good news is you do not have to let price be the deciding factor when choosing between INSANITY and P90X. Why? Because they both cost the same!

The lowest price for INSANITY and P90X is $119.88 plus shipping. But, if you order through a Team Beachbody store, you get free bonus workouts that are not available anywhere else.

If you order P90X through the link below, you get two free bonus workouts: Fountain of Youth Yoga and Mammoth UML, which is an upper body workout. And, as of writing this, you will also receive P90X Plus (4 DVDs – 5 workouts) for free, which is a $130 value alone.

P90X vs INSANITY Results

INSANITY and P90X will undoubtedly get you real results. Both programs will help you lose weight, tone-up, and improve your cardiovascular health.

  • For weight loss, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.
  • For toning up, I would give P90X five stars and INSANITY four stars.
  • For cardiovascular health, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.

The Simple Way to Decide

If I had to put it into simplest terms, if you like weight training, lots of pull-ups and push-ups then P90X is for you. If you do not like weight training and love high-intensity cardio INSANITY is your better option.

  1. Hi Bethany!
I was so thankful to find a comparison done by a woman because by going through multiple workouts at my school with boys over the summer, I have found fitness can be different for men and women. I am a 5’8″ junior in high school. I am 143 pounds. This summer I weighed anything from 129-134 pounds, and I would very much like to be at that weight again. However, if I stayed my same weight but thinned and toned, I would be fine. I play basketball but often gain weight during the season. Usually i just lose it by running and lifting in the summer but this year, I want to do something different. I want to make a change in my body that will last me into college ( with work for upkeep). I really enjoy all areas of fitness, from weights to cardio to kickboxing to running to yoga. However, I am really busy with sports and FFA and my parents farm and I don’t have a ton of equipment. (My parents offered to buy me one of these for my birthday because they knew I would really like it) I am kind of leaning towards Insanity, but I have done some P90X at my school. I would just like to know what you think would be the better purchase.
    Thanks so much,
    Gwen

  2. Hey! I’m 171 pounds and about 5’4 or 5’5 (not sure haha) but I would really like to lose weight more so I’m sure Insaity is better but I have a hard time sticking to workout plans. I work a lot and I am in college so it gets hard- I usually work out in the morning because I’m a morning person.

    1. Hi Caitlyn, with everything you’ve told me, I think Insanity would be the better of the two for you. You won’t need to buy equipment, and you can do it in a relatively small area. Schedule the workouts into your morning – you’re lucky that you’re a morning person and can easily do this. If you put it into your physical schedule as part of your normal daily routine, you will be more apt to stick with the program. Exercising is something that you just have to do even when you don’t feel like it, because you know what?, after working out, you always feel better than you did before you worked out. Hope this helps – good luck!

  3. Hi, I’m 21 and i weigh 175 lbs. ive lost about 10 pounds in two months. I count calories and i usually go to the gym to use the cardio equipment. I want to build muscle but I’m trying to lose weight faster. This article was so helpful but i still cant decide which program would be better. Which do you think i should start with?

    1. Hi Chistina, my first thought when reading your comment was P90X was the better option. But, Insanity would help you lose weight faster, so maybe that would be best. Just be warned Insanity is pretty much all cardiovascular exercise and if you want to train with weights P90X would be the better choice. -Bethany

  4. Hi i am 23yrs old 5’1 and sadly 158lbs. I had two children but before then i was at 118lbs. I really want to lose weight and tighten my stomach and legs but especially my stomach. I forgot what i was like before kids haha cant even imagine my belly button before stretch marks :) i was wondering what program you think.is best for.me i want to just be able to work out and now worry about equipment because of my baby. Suggestions please and thank you!

    1. Hi Chille, Insanity for sure. Insanity requires no equipment and it sounds like you really want to focus on wieght loss, so that is another reason why Insanity sounds like the better option for you. With P90X you would need weights or a reistance aband and a place to pull-ups. Hope that helps, Bethany

  5. Hi! I’m 29, 5’5 and a depressing 206 lbs. I’m looking to lose 70-80 lbs. I used to be extremely fit. I lived for soccer playing year-a-round since I was 7. Then came college and I didn’t have the time to play as often as I wanted. Years passed and I stopped playing all together. With that came the lbs. About 4 years ago I was back to my ideal weight, but it was do in part to a lot to stress and not the way I should have lost it all. My eating habits are far from perfect. I’m looking to get back to where I was 4 years ago, but with muscle and lots of it. Then maybe I’ll feel comfortable enough to get back on the field again!

    1. Hi Nicole, I think P90X would be a great place for you to begin your weight loss journey. Not only will it help you lose the weight, it will help build lots of lean muscle mass. If you’re looking to get really sizeable muscle as your goal, you may also want to consider Body Beast. I personally love it, but I tend to like lifting as heavy as I can possibly go :) You will really need to take hold of your diet as this is also what will help you lose the weight and get back on the field again. I like P90X’s first and second phase of eating, but I wouldn’t follow phase 3 – it’s too many carbs unless you happen to be a finely tuned athlete with very low body fat percentage, which you will eventually get back to. Good luck, and if you have any questions along the way, please feel free to ask.

  6. Hi Bethany,
I am 5 ft 2 inches and fluctuate between 113 and 120. I’ve had 4 c- sections. My mid section is my major problem. What program will help me tone up and especially loose this stubborn stomach fat. Thank you.

    1. Hi Natalee, I think Insanity would be good for you, since it will help you get rid of that stubborn belly fat and tone up the rest of you. Just remember that after having c-sections, you could have some scar tissue below, so be cautious when doing any abdominal muscle exercises because you could have a weakened area. The good news is that you can make it stronger…just be aware and trust your body. If you ever feel any pain (pain…not discomfort), discontinue the moves that are hurting you and tone it back to a move that you can comfortably do. In time, you will get stronger.

  7. Hi Bethany. I’m so torn as to which to try – P90X or Insanity? I’m 45 yrs old, 5’5″ and weigh 138-140. I was late having kids and have a 4 1/2 yo and a 17 month old. I’ve lost all the “baby weight” but really want to be more toned. I love the thought of Insanity since I prefer cardio to strength training but I’m not sure that’ll give me the results I want. Not that I’d be disappointed if I lost a few more pounds :) I’ve been wearing a Fitbit and have discovered that my busy life working and being a mom results in more than 10,000 steps per day but it’s not helping my pooch! I know I need to add something – what are your thoughts? Thanks!

    1. HI Margaret, I think Insanity would be an excellent choice for you. It gives you a workout that tightens you up without having to lift any weights, because it uses your own weight as resistance. Insanity will no doubt help tone you up, lose any extra fat, leaving you with an athletic look you’ll love. Make sure to cut your calories and watch what you eat too – it’s not only exercise that will help you get the body you want, but also a healthy, reduced calorie diet. Good luck!

  8. Hi Bethany :) I’m 5’2 about 150 pounds and 22 years old. I haven’t really been the “work out” type but i really want to look great this summer. When I’ve worked out in the past (dieting and running) I’ve lost weight but didn’t like that I lost a lot of my thighs and still had a stomach. I been considering insanity since i really want to push myself and get results quick. I wanted to your opinion on which workout I should do. My main target is my stomach although id like to loose a little weight all over. Thank you ! :)

    1. Hi Kelly, Insnaity will push you that is for sure! As long as you have done the research. I believe the Insanity program to be the best program for quick and overall weight loss. -Bethany

  9. Latasha Heyward

Hi I wanted to know what you think is best for a mom I just has a c section 3 months ago and need to really tone my body before the summer I love carbs but also enjoy veggies and fruits the most what do u think is best

    1. Hi Latasha, assuming you’ve already checked with your doctor to make sure you’re ready for intense activity after major surgery, I think P90X would be a good choice for you. I think it would help you get a toned up look you want, while staying away from exercises that will aggravate your weakened area.

      1. yes I have spoken to my doctor and I have four months to go just want to be prepared
        thanks alot

  10. Thanks for this write up!! I’ve just started doing my research and am interested in doing either program but would appreciate your opinion. I’m 26, 5’7 and 168 pounds definitely looking to lose weight and just be overall more toned.

Anyways, my main concern is that I’ve done a heart rate monitor test 2 years ago at my gym so they could see my different heart rate zones for weight loss etc. They noted that my heart rate goes up pretty high in cardio apparently higher than normal.. if that makes any sense. Nothing dangerous, it just works harder? haha! I just wonder if the intense cardio in Insanity is going to put me mostly at a super high heart rate, where fat burn for me is at a more medium heart rate I think around 145-155 zone. I’m leaning towards Insanity, although I do enjoy weight training probably more, but then again don’t have a lot of space or want to spend money on additional workout weights etc. This is why I’m still torn between the two. Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks :)

    1. Hi Vanessa, I wouldn’t worry about your heart rate too much. As you exercise more, your heart will get stronger, and you will be able to work out longer and harder.

As for a workout program…I think Focus T25 might be the right program to begin your weight loss journey with. It can easily accommodate any fitness level, and you don’t need a ton of space or equipment. Plus, T25 is intense, so when you build up your endurance (which won’t take long), you will still get an awesome workout.

You will eventually need weights during the second phase of the program, but you can always opt for resistance bands if you don’t want to invest the money in a set of weights. That being said, I am a firm believer in free weights, since it’s really a lifetime investment in your health…weights never go bad. And it is the weightlifting combined with the cardio and strength training moves that will get you an awesome body. Good luck!

  11. Hi Bethany,

I am 5’5″ and weigh about 136 lbs. for the past two years I’ve been very active, lifting weights three days a week, and running three days. But I’m bored and want something new. I’ve been looking at the P90x2 workout but now reading all these questions and responses….wondering about Insanity. My goal isn’t really to lose weight, but rather tone up and build muscle. I seem to carry a bit of weight in my stomach, so losing that would be amazing. What would you suggest? Thanks!

    1. HI Summer, if you want to keep with the weight lifting work do P90X. Insanity is purely a cardiovascular workout. P90X in my opinion is better for muscle tone than Insanity is also. -Bethany

  12. Hi Bethany! I’m 32 and really stomped on what workout to do. I used to be active up until 25. I danced competitively up until graduation so I was always lean and never had to workout hard to stay skinny. Now I’m still skinny but not toned p, lost my butt, and not working out has caught up to me. Not in a bad way but my clothes fit different and i tire easy. I feel it will be hard to get started because it’s been a while, but once I girt going i will be fine. I want to remain skinny/lean, but I warn a toned stomach, toned butt, and lean arms not big muscles. I do like the model look not the fitness model look. What would you recommend?

    1. Hi Danielle, if you don’t like the fitness model look, then I would not suggest either program for you, because that is exactly what you’ll end up with – especially if you don’t have much weight to lose. Instead, opt for Brazil Butt Lift, which was designed to give Leandro’s supermodel clients’ butt a lift, while maintaining their long, lean physiques they need for their line of work. Hope this helps!

      1. Thank you so much for the quick reply! I’m glad you have me another option. Will the Brazil Butt Lift tone your entire body? Even though I don’t need to lose, I need to tone what I have. I would still like to have some definition but not much. Will this workout do all that?

    2. What kind of results would the hip hop abs give? Or the turbo fire? I just want to make sure I choose the right workout. I want the lean look with definition just not bulky. I don’t need to Lise weight like I mentioned previously but I have it around my midsection and need to tone everything because I haven’t worked out in 8 years. Would p90x but to intense. Could you briefly describe the different workouts series and what it achieves or the bodies results. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and time!

  13. Hi! Im a 29 y/o mother of two. I have a 9 year old and 2 year old. I weigh about 160 and am 5’5. I am active as far as moving around all day, but I smoke and have a lot of bad habits (eating unhealthy). Prior to having my 2 year old I was a solid 123 and pretty active. But I plan to change this new me, however I did have a small back surgery in 2008 that still can cause me grief now and again, usually when im not active.. such as sitting around. I keep flip flopping from p90x to Insanity because the meal plan for insanity is easier, its less time and results are faster… just fearful over if my body can handle it. P90x has a harder meal plan for me which the diet is the hardest thing for me to follow because I am a terrible shopper and havent been cooking long enough so I get frustrated. What do you think I should do? Im ready to finally commit to something and I really would love to focus and do it right while shedsing my awful muffin top.

    1. Hi Jamie – pending your doctor has okayed you for intense exercise, I would just do what works for you. You don’t have to pair the diet with the actual program. If you like the diet better from Insanity, eat that way while following P90X. Truthfully, the P90X diet is not that great anyway. So, stick with what works best, and you can get your pre-second baby body back! I would suggest tracking your calories online at myfitnesspal.com, quit smoking!, eat lots of whole foods, stay away from sugary, high fat and processed foods, and drink lots of water. And if you ever feel pain in your back when doing any exercises, stop immediately. Whenever you come to that move again, modify the movement so you don’t feel any pain. Good luck!

  14. Hello, I still don’t know which program I should do. I’m 5’5, 153 pds. Been going to the gym but stopped that to do home workouts now. I am almost done with focus t25. I lose 6 pds and 9 inches on it so far. But i still have more fat to lose before I wanna gain muscles. I can feel my core muscles forming but I need to kill my thin layer of fat that’s over it. Which program do u recommend?

    1. HI Jennifer, congratulations on the job will done thus far! Since you are still in fat burning mode I would go with Insanity and when you are ready to build muscle move on to P90X. -Bethany

      1. I have another question Bethany. My knees are now hurting from focus t25 and I’m almost done with it. I have 2 more weeks left. Will insanity be the same for my knees?

  15. Hey. I a, 5’7 and currently 155. I was 135 for a long time and dropped to 125 for about a year. My eating habits were horrible and I developed an eating dissorder which is why I gained weight and where I’m at now. I would like to lose 20lbs while gaining lost muscle back. Which program would you recommend? I was doing kickboxing and cycling but haven’t in a few years. Right now I just walk on a treadmill.
    Thanks

I didn’t mention I gained the weight because it was suggested by my nutritionist that I wasn’t eating enough. So when I did start eating I gained quickly.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Stephanie, I would suggest starting with T25. You can lose the weight and build back the muscle as long as you stick to eating healthy and exercising. -Bethany

  16. Hello i am 21 and 5 3. I just had a baby and want some tone to my tummy and to lose the post pregnancy belly. I have looked into insanity p90x t25 and hip hop abs. I am looking for something that i can get results and have fun doing it. But i want to feel the burn to, i like knowing that i am working out. Please help me!

    1. Hi Brittany – congratulations on your new baby! Pending your doctor’s okay to begin a new exercise program, if you’re looking for something fun that doesn’t seem like a workout, definitely go for Hip Hop Abs. I think you’ll really love the dance-like moves, which will all help tone your tummy and lose that post-pregnancy belly. In fact it’s so much fun, you’ll forget you’re even working out even though you will definitely feel the burn :) Good luck!

      1. My son is 8 months now but the tummy still is not gone. And thank you so much. I used to do Zumba in high school. But i decided to stop and focus on school. I will definitely give hip hop abs a shot. Thank you so very much for your input. :-)

  17. Hi, thank you for this article it was very helpful! I was wondering what you would suggest for me as I am 5’2 and 125. I have always been between 110-115 and got sick and gained the weight. I would like to lose 10lbs and tone up.

    Thank you for any advice

  18. Hi Bethany,

I am a 5’11” 22 year old and am looking to lose some weight. I want to lose weight but also tone and work on my flexibility! I also work full time. I used to be a swimmer in high school and in college I gained a lot of weight, and grew about 3-4 inches! I am currently about 185-190lbs and am looking to get down to 160-150lbs.

    Which program would you recommend?

Thank you in advance for your help!

  19. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. I was having trouble deciding between the two and this really helped!!!

    Thank you!

  20. Hello, I am 21 years old, 5ft 3in. I am an active person and I do enjoy running (knees and ankles get sore at times though) I horse back ride, and i also use to do kickboxing. I do have the turbo Jam dvds and i enjoy doing them, i think they are really fun but i find they dont tone me which is what i am looking for. I was in an accident and broke 5 ribs about 7 months ago, and since then i have gained roughly 20-25lbs and i am now 161lbs. I would like to get down to 125lbs, but I am not overly concerned with the scale number becaue I do understand that muscle weighs more then fat. I am more interested in looking healthy, feeling healthy and being able to feel comfortable in a bathing suit and fitting comfortably into my jeans again. I am stuck on which one to do! My boyfriend is also looking to loose some weight and get tonned. He is 23 and roughly 220lbs. He enjoys doing sports for working out but we live in a small town where stuff like that is limited. He is not a fan of just running he thinks it is boring. He use to go to the gym and did weight training and he enjoyed the results that he was seeing, his schedule just was not lining up at the time. Space is not an issue we have a large area to do these workouts in, we are just stuck on which one will benifit us the most?
    Thanks :)

    1. Hi Stephanie, with everything you told me, I think P90X would be a great program for both of you to follow. It will not only help you both lose weight and get toned, but also get you healthy and feeling fitter and better than ever. You are going to look GREAT in a bathing suit by the time you’re done and may even need to go down another size in your jeans…nevermind fitting into your old pairs! Plus, your boyfriend will really like that it’s a lot of weightlifting. Good luck!
