The question I kept on asking myself before trying to decide between the INSANITY and P90X workout programs was, “oh my gosh, when did I get so fat?!” I knew it made my heart race to walk up a few flights of stairs, but when did I gain nearly thirty pounds?!
Yes, I was over 150 lbs when I made the decision to get back in shape again, so I wouldn’t be self-conscious about getting in a bathing suit. This is when I began comparing INSANITY vs P90X. I saw enough of the infomercials on TV, so I was intrigued.
As a woman, my goals were to lose weight and tone up without getting a professional bodybuilder look. Unfortunately, most of the real reviews I was able to find online about either program were written by men. My problem with that was men lose fat quicker than women, and men tend to like different types of workouts than women.
Anyways, below is my comparison of the top two at-home workout programs from a woman’s perspective.

The Two Key Differences Between INSANITY and P90X
If I were to answer the questions, “What is P90X?” and “What is INSANITY?” in one sentence answers, this is what I would say this:
INSANITY is a 60-day intense workout program that is primarily a weight loss program where the workouts are performed 6 times a week and are 30-45 minute in length.
P90X is a 90-day total body workout program that consists of weight training workouts, cardiovascular exercise, and Yoga to help you not only lose weight, but also build lean muscle.

What Are the P90X and INSANITY Workouts Like?
The INSANITY workout program is based on something known as “Max Interval Training”, which is long-bursts of full blown cardiovascular exercise followed by shorter and lower intensity intervals of cardiovascular exercise. All of the INSANITY workouts will get your heart rate up and leave you pretty much drenched in sweat.
P90X bases its workouts around a training principle known as “muscle confusion”. The theory behind this principle is that, when you change up exercise order, workout order and even your diet, you don’t allow the body enough time to adapt to the training. This keeps you always moving forward with your health and fitness and not plateauing.
How the Workouts are Different
INSANITY workouts are high-intensity cardiovacular workouts that are not dance orienteted. You will be left in a puddle of sweat after these workouts from the plyometric moves that they incorporate with other physically demanding body weight only movements. Insanity workouts are done 6 times a week with no weights.
P90X workouts are also done six times a week. The program features three days of weight training, a plyometric workout, Kenpo(kickboxing) workout, and sweat inducing Yoga workout. The workouts are cycled in three week phases so you will not get bored with the workouts.
How the Diets Differ
The INSANITY diet plan is an easy-to-follow diet where you eat 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. This diet is well-balanced and easy to stick with. Everything is detailed in the INSANITY diet plan, which includes a step-by-step guide to calculating your calories and a bunch of easy-to-follow recipes that won’t keep you in the kitchen all day.
The P90X diet is more complicated than the INSANITY diet. The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase nutrition plan. In phase 1 of the P90X diet, which is called the Fat-Shredder phase, you eat a diet high in protein, low in fat, and low in carbohydrates. During the first phase of the P90X diet, people often notice significant loss of energy from the lower carbohydrates, but also significant weight loss. The second phase of the P90X diet is called the Energy Booster and is similar to the Insanity diet of 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. The third phase of the P90X diet is called the Endurance Maximizer and is nicknamed an athletic diet for this reason: unless you have extremely low body-fat levels, you should avoid this phase of the diet entirely and stick to the Energy Booster phase or you’ll likely add unwanted body fat.
What Equipment You Need for P90X or INSANITY

What I like most about the INSANITY workout program is the fact that it requires no workout equipment. This means I can just move my coffee table to the side, throw in a DVD, and start working out it minutes. You may want to add a heart-rate monitor to your workouts to make sure you stay in your target heart range.
On the other end of the spectrum, P90X requires lots of equipment if you want to get the most out of the program. While it is recommended you have at least resistance bands and a yoga mat to do P90X, you will really need a few more pieces of equipment. Pull-ups and chin-up variations are major exercises in P90X, which means you’ll need a chin-up bar, plus likely a chair to help give you a boost until you’re strong enough. You’ll also want dumbbells up to thirty pounds, push-up bars, a yoga block, and a heart rate monitor is always very handy to have. The only good thing is that weights up to thirty pounds, yoga mat and heart rate monitor are something you will always be able to use down the road, so think of them as more of an investment in your health overall.
P90X vs INSANITY – Which Program is Harder?
For one reason or another, people always want to know which program is harder when comparing Insanity to P9oX. I can tell you this: both programs are extremely difficult, and both programs if followed properly are extremely rewarding. They will whip you into shape in 60 or 90 days and start you on track to a new and healthier lifestyle. my name is sierra, and i started working out regularly in february 2014, i started doing a workout on daily burn called inferno and lost about 12 inches total! i started weighing my heaviest at 160 and I’m 5’6. I’m currently at 147. and am still over my heights healthy weight. id like to be in the middle of my lowest and highest healthy weight which is 130-35lbs. i loved inferno, ansi did it a couple times, but I’m bored with doing the same thing. i tried t25, but i quiet honestly found shaun t… hard to like. i want fast weight loss results, and my main areas i need to loose weight in is my stomach and my thighs. but i dont have good knees, so I’m afraid insanity and how much cardio will be a little hard on me, but i do like the idea of strength train with p90x. i just wouldn’t buy the pull up bar. id use weights. i want to be at my goal and toned by next summer!!
Hi Sierra, Congrats on the weight loss so far! I have no doubt you will hit your goal. I agree with you, I do not think Insanity woould be a good program for you, especially not with the knee issues. P90X does sound like it would be the better option for you, the strangth training and cardio workout will be a good mix. You do not need the pull-up bar, but you will need a resistance band for some of the moves, you can find these cheap at almost any retail store. -Bethany

I have completed Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred and Focus T25 and have just started Insanity (week 2). I’ve been told mixed messages about which I should do, Insanity or P90X. I’m not sure how much I weigh but I’m looking to lose as much weight as possible in the next two months. PLEASE help me in which program I should be doing!! I’m so confused on which will be the most beneficial in losing weight quickest. I have a strict diet already given by a PT but it’s just the workout I’m not sure. Hello, I think you are over complicating it. Do not do Insanity and go to the gym. Insanity is extreme enough and going to the gym too could lead to overtraining. Your goal should be to lose 1-2 pounds of weight a week. This is a healthy amount of weight to lose, in the long-term this will lead to permanent weight loss. My suggestion is this, choose a program and stick to it. If you like strength training, go with P90X, If you like the intense cardio workouts in Insanity, stick with it, eat right and you will lose weight. -Bethany
Hi Bethany. I’m 45, 4’11” and currently weigh 116lbs. I too have had trouble with my weight fluctuating throughout my life. I weighed 182lbs 2 years ago and lost the weight due to depression and barely eating.which has left me with slightly saggy skin round my middle area. I know I don’t need to lose too much more weight, if anything none my family and friends tell me but toning up my middle is a big issue for me. I wonder if you feel that I would get good results with adding either of these workouts to my routines. I already do Rockin Body and Hip Hop Abs to help my daughter lose weight but like to mix things up a bit and I find them fairly easy. I have already noticed a slight improvement and only been using them 3 weeks. I now eat regularly and healthier and my energy levels have rocketed even though I have trouble sleeping.
Hi Julie, I would stick with the Rockin Body and Hip Hop Abs for a round or two. Then you could move onto either P90X, Insanity, or T25. Couple things that have helped me get better sleep are. Creating a night time routine, no electronics an hour before bed, no intense exercise after 7, and mo caffeine after 3,

Bethany, I am 5’3″ 135lbs have been doing P90X for over a year and really love it. I did not follow the diet completely but did try to eat better during the week and lost pounds and inches. I am not a scale girl as much as a, how do I look, feel and clothes fit type of person. I am borrowing Insanity from a friend and was wondering what you think about combining the 2? I hate the idea of dropping the weights all together but I also think I need more cardio to lean up. I did a half marathon last year in addition to P90X training and still didn’t get in rocking shape. I am starting to see slow progress with losing body fat and seeing more veins and such but I really want to lean up and tone without bulk. Suggestions?

I have purchased both the p90x and insanity dvds a while back.
I am 5’4 and currently 146 plds. I stopped working out and got really bad eating habits over the past 6 months. Before relocating to a different state I was weighing in at 133, very active did strength training, bootcamps, zumba, daily cardio workouts like treadmill, jogging, elliptical. I had went from 165 lbs to 133. All with hard work and dedication.
I lost my drive these past 6 months and now my overall body has got flabby, and I’ve gained fat all over. My stomach has always been a huge trouble area. But I’m ready to get back up and get my drive back.
I’m not sure which videos to do, I love the cardio but I also use to weight train 2 times a week at my old gym. I want to shed fat fast… but also build lean muscle?

I was always muscular but now that I am 43 I have noticed….well…..flabbiness (lack of muscle in my quads) I even see small ripples, its saddening. I am active though, I play field hockey weekly with 20 somethings and they are impressed. I want to tone up, don’t need to lose weight, im 123lbs, 5’7″ my stomach is toned well. It’s just my leds, I don;t push myself enough, I can, but don’t..No pain, no gain…haven’t felt real pain in a while, I’m ready! What do you think?

Here’s my situation. I have never really been a hard core fit person. I hate gyms. Everytime I go into one I am intimidated and feel like I don’t really know what to do. Because of that, I have always liked to stay active by spending a lot of time outdoors doing activities like camping, hiking, walking my dog, etc. While I live a fun lifestyle, I have never experienced good muscle tone because I’m just not very athletic. I have always been average sized…not thin and muscular but still able to get away with wearing a bikini-type body.
HOWEVER, since starting college I tend to spend more time being sedentary hitting the books rather than spending time outdoors. Also with all that studying comes a lot of snacking, so you can imagine how that is not good for my health. About 25 pounds have crept on me over the last 3 years, and I am ready for them to GO. I have always liked the look of people that are FIT, not necessarily thin.
Based on what you have said, I’m leaning towards insanity just to get that initial boost of cardio for fat loss reasons. However, over the long haul I would like to have some feminine muscle tone. Will insanity give me that, or should I go ahead with P90X?
(My other reason for leaning towards Insanity is because I am on a tight budget. I like that it requires no equipment. However, if you think P90X is a better fit for me, then I don’t mind investing the money.)
Hi Amanda, I agree Insanity does sound like it would be the better option for you while you are in school. Also, you might want to look into T25 also from Shaun T, I have a review on the sidebar, T25 workouts are only 25 minutes long and while you are in school they might be a better option. Plus, T25 has resistance training that will help you build that muscle. And, for snacking you may want to try some healthier ooptions, like nuts and/or baby carrots. Hi Nichol, the last 10 lbs are the hardest to lose. If you like weihgt training, P90X has, Insanity is harcore cardio, no weights. Also, to lose those last 10, your diet is going to have to be spot on, so that might be something to take a closer look at. -Bethany

Hi. I didn’t decide yet which one to do so I guess I need some help. I am 21 years old, 5’7 in, 133lbs. I’ve done some sport for all my life but I stopped 2 years ago when I injured my elbow and went to college. I did try P90X workout once like for 2 weeks but did not steak with it… So now my goal is to get in shape and specifically i would like to do muscle toning(maybe with some weight loss, not sure if need that first) and improve flexibility. I was thinking to go for Insanity as I don’t wanna buy all the equipment for the P90X but i would like to hear some opinion or advice.

Hi Julia, if your gut is telling you to go with Insanity that is the program I would choose. Insnaity woll help get you toned, but does lack any real flexibility training, you may want to add 5-10 minutes of stretching prior to or after your workouts. -Bethany

Hey, I am 25 and I am 5’7 and I weigh a shameful 190… Its all in my tummy area after having a kid a few years back … My legs are small and my arms etc are also…. I need to be 155-160 ish or at the lowest 145 I tried t25 and I got bored cuz It didnt challenge me enough.. i am an Army vet and I feed of challenge.. I am not too outta shape I can run 2 miles easy and do some push ups etc Your thoughts? also what do you think about shakology

Hi Des, I liken Shaunt T to an Army drill sargeant in the Insanity workout and it will surely be difficult enough for you. It is the most intense Beachbody program available in my opinion.
With Shakeology, you just have to remember it is much more than a protein skake. I did not jump on the Shakeology bandwagon with both feet, but after trying it, it has become a part of my daily nutrtition. It fits great into my work schedule as a meal replacement and fills in any vitamin or minerals I would be missing from whole foods alone.
As for the loose skin, you are still young so you skin still should elastic enough to firm back up after your weight loss. A topical vitamin c cream can also help and are relatively cheap.

Hi! Thanks for the information. I am 114 lbs, 28 years old. I used to weigh 125 but became a vegan and cut out alcohol and sugar. For the past 4 years I have done vigorous yoga everyday, I have nice arm muscles. I would love some abs though! I have started occasionally drinking alcohol again and eating dairy two nights a week, my stomach gains weight immediately from this, I tend to get a little pouch. My goal is to have a flat stomach. The problem is that I have wrist injury and can’t really do push ups anymore and I havent been able to do yoga anymore either (which has left me very depressed)…looking for something that is not terribly time consuming and wont put too much pressure on my wrists. I also ready that P90X has a 30 minute workout version now…Thanks so much!!

Hi Jenna, honestly, P90X and Insanity are not good options if you have wrist problems that prevent you from being able to do push-ups. A Beachbody program like Hip Hop Abs would be a better one for you. It focuses on toning up your core without spending all your time on the floor, and the workouts are around the 30-minute mark.
If there is ever a move that feels uncomfortable on your wrist, just modify the move until it is comfortable – you don’t want to injure yourself. I would also keep track of what you’re eating on myfitnesspal.com if you aren’t already doing so. When eating a restricted diet such as yours, you need to make sure you’re getting in enough protein and healthy fats, so it’s a great, easy way to keep track. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Maura – the secret to not getting that deflated balloon appearance is losing weight at a slow and steady rate as well as building muscle to increase the snapback of your skin. I would suggest doing Focus T25 and opt in for the third, gamma phase (this is the most weightlifting-concentrated phase). T25 is great for people of all fitness levels – it’s challenging, yet there’s always the modified moves to follow if you’re having trouble keeping up. Once you build your endurance, you will be able to push yourself harder each and every time.
Plus, the fact it’s 25 minutes a day makes it easier to stick with – anyone can make time for 25 minutes. Just make sure to follow the dietary recommendations, keep track of your calorie intake on a website like myfitnesspal.com, and stick with the program. You can get the body you’ve always wanted – you just have to take it one day at a time and always remember the reason you’re working out whenever you’re feeling like you might want to give up. Hi Michelle, I’d go with P90X if you’re predominantly looking to weight train. It should help with your endurance as well. Insanity would also help with endurance, but it’s not so much of a strength training routine. Hope this helps, but please let me know if you have any other questions.

In the past I have tried several free work out routines online from bobyrock.TV (now dailyhiit) and the ntc app. Which I really enjoyed but I didn’t lose any weight. But I did love them both the high energy of the work out and the energy I would have throughout the day. But again I wasn’t losing weight. What program do you think is best for me?
Hi Jessica, have you ever considered Focus T25? It’s high energy like Insanity, but easier on your body or if you’re not in already good shape (I still have trouble finishing the workouts!) It’s just 25 minutes a day and will really help blast fat. Just make sure to remember that diet is more than half the battle when trying to get in shape. T25 comes with an easy to follow nutrition plan with all the recipes containing five or few ingredients which definitely saves you time in the kitchen. -Bethany

I start the police academy in 2 and a half months. The focus in the academy is sprinting, push ups, and core. They try to do a “crossfit” type of workout. Hi Jeanine, I agree with you, I think that you will find that the bootcamp like style workouts in P90X are the perfect fit for you. The muscle confusion principle that P90X is based upon will keep you from getting bored with the workouts as the schedule and workouts change frequently which never allows you body to plateau.
