INSANITY vs P90X: A Comparison for Women by a Woman

insanity-vs-p90x
A guide to choosing between two of the top at home workout programs of all time.

The question I kept on asking myself before trying to decide between the INSANITY and P90X workout programs was, “oh my gosh, when did I get so fat?!” I knew it made my heart race to walk up a few flights of stairs, but when did I gain nearly thirty pounds?!

Yes, I was over 150 lbs when I made the decision to get back in shape again, so I wouldn’t be self-conscious about getting in a bathing suit. This is when I began comparing INSANITY vs P90X. I saw enough of the infomercials on TV, so I was intrigued.

As a woman, my goals were to lose weight and tone up without getting a professional bodybuilder look. Unfortunately, most of the real reviews I was able to find online about either program were written by men. My problem with that was men lose fat quicker than women, and men tend to like different types of workouts than women.

Anyways, below is my comparison of the top two at-home workout programs from a woman’s perspective.

And this is post is a comparison with the original P90X, I’d suggest reading my P90X Generation Next review which came out in 2026 befroe deciding whihc program is the best for you.

The Two Key Differences Between INSANITY and P90X

If I were to answer the questions, “What is P90X?” and “What is INSANITY?” in one sentence answers, this is what I would say this:

INSANITY is a 60-day intense workout program that is primarily a weight loss program where the workouts are performed 6 times a week and are 30-45 minute in length.

P90X is a 90-day total body workout program that consists of weight training workouts, cardiovascular exercise, and Yoga to help you not only lose weight, but also build lean muscle.

Being an art major(grad), I have always found it easier to take in information when presented visually, so  I figured my chart comparing INSANITY vs P90X would be an easy way for you to see key differences between the programs and which is better at achieving which result:

What Are the P90X and INSANITY Workouts Like?

The INSANITY workout program is based on something known as “Max Interval Training”, which is long-bursts of full blown cardiovascular exercise followed by shorter and lower intensity intervals of cardiovascular exercise. All of the INSANITY workouts will get your heart rate up and leave you pretty much drenched in sweat.

P90X bases its workouts around a training principle known as “muscle confusion”. The theory behind this principle is that, when you change up exercise order, workout order and even your diet, you don’t allow the body enough time to adapt to the training. This keeps you always moving forward with your health and fitness and not plateauing.

How the Workouts are Different

INSANITY workouts are high-intensity cardiovacular workouts that are not dance orienteted. You will be left in a puddle of sweat after these workouts from the plyometric moves that they incorporate with other physically demanding body weight only movements. Insanity workouts are done 6 times a week with no weights.

P90X workouts are also done six times a week. The program features three days of weight training, a plyometric workout, Kenpo(kickboxing) workout, and sweat inducing Yoga workout. The workouts are cycled in three week phases so you will not get bored with the workouts.

How the Diets Differ

The INSANITY diet plan is an easy-to-follow diet where you eat 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. This diet is well-balanced and easy to stick with. Everything is detailed in the INSANITY diet plan, which includes a step-by-step guide to calculating your calories and a bunch of easy-to-follow recipes that won’t keep you in the kitchen all day.

The P90X diet is more complicated than the INSANITY diet. The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase nutrition plan. In phase 1 of the P90X diet, which is called the Fat-Shredder phase, you eat a diet high in protein, low in fat, and low in carbohydrates. During the first phase of the P90X diet, people often notice significant loss of energy from the lower carbohydrates, but also significant weight loss. The second phase of the P90X diet is called the Energy Booster and is similar to the Insanity diet of 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. The third phase of the P90X diet is called the Endurance Maximizer and is nicknamed an athletic diet for this reason: unless you have extremely low body-fat levels, you should avoid this phase of the diet entirely and stick to the Energy Booster phase or you’ll likely add unwanted body fat.

What Equipment You Need for P90X or INSANITY

p90x-and-insanity-equipment
At the minimum you would need a resistance band to do the P90X workouts. Insanity requires no equipment, it use only bodyweight based exercises.

What I like most about the INSANITY workout program is the fact that it requires no workout equipment. This means I can just move my coffee table to the side, throw in a DVD, and start working out it minutes. You may want to add a heart-rate monitor to your workouts to make sure you stay in your target heart range.

On the other end of the spectrum, P90X  requires lots of equipment if you want to get the most out of the program. While it is recommended you have at least resistance bands and a yoga mat to do P90X, you will really need a few more pieces of equipment. Pull-ups and chin-up variations are major exercises in P90X, which means you’ll need a chin-up bar, plus likely a chair to help give you a boost until you’re strong enough. You’ll also want dumbbells up to thirty pounds, push-up bars, a yoga block, and a heart rate monitor is always very handy to have. The only good thing is that weights up to thirty pounds, yoga mat and heart rate monitor are something you will always be able to use down the road, so think of them as more of an investment in your health overall.

P90X vs  INSANITY  – Which Program is Harder?

For one reason or another, people always want to know which program is harder when comparing Insanity to P9oX. I can tell you this: both programs are extremely difficult, and both programs if followed properly are extremely rewarding. They will whip you into shape in 60 or 90 days and start you on track to a new and healthier lifestyle. However after trying both programs, I believe INSANITY is the harder of the two programs if you were to go all out with either.

Price Point – Where to Get p90X or INSANITY for the Lowest Prices

The good news is you do not have to let price be the deciding factor when choosing between INSANITY and P90X. Why? Because they both cost the same!

The lowest price for INSANITY and P90X is $119.88 plus shipping. But, if you order through a Team Beachbody store, you get free bonus workouts that are not available anywhere else.

If you order P90X through the link below, you get two free bonus workouts: Fountain of Youth Yoga and Mammoth UML, which is an upper body workout. And, as of writing this, you will also receive P90X Plus (4 DVDs – 5 workouts) for free, which is a $130 value alone.

Ordering INSANITY through the link below will also get you a free bonus workout called the Fast and Furious workout. I love this workout, and the fact it is only 20-minutes long makes an awesome addition to my workout line-up…especially on those days when I am short on time.

P90X vs INSANITY Results

INSANITY and P90X will undoubtedly get you real results. Both programs will help you lose weight, tone-up, and improve your cardiovascular health.

  • For weight loss, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.
  • For toning up, I would give P90X five stars and INSANITY four stars.
  • For cardiovascular health, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.

The Simple Way to Decide

If I had to put it into simplest terms, if you like weight training, lots of pull-ups and push-ups then P90X is for you. If you do not like weight training and love high-intensity cardio INSANITY is your better option.

    Hi Bethany,

I just turned 22 I am currently 5’4 and 175 pounds. I have struggled with loosing weight and then gaining weight all the weight back. I want to lose weight while also being toned. I ultimately want toned legs, small waist and to lift my butt. I’m unsure if I want to get insanity or p90x? I tried 21 day fix and it did tone my body, but not to the extent that I wanted it too. I’m not getting any younger and I want to have that dream body and also be healthy. I’m also wondering between p90x or insanity, which one is the easiest diet plan to follow?

    1. Hi Candice, Either program works. Just need to stick with a healthy diet and exercise until you reach your goals and then continue to maintain that lifestyle.. P90X includes weights and a lot more strength training than Insanity, but if you just like cardio workouts then Insanity would be a better workout program to follow. Both diets are pretty similar, you could follow the Fix diet plan also as it is in my opinion a more well rounded diet. Bethany

  2. Hi Bethany!

This article was super helpful. I’m almost 6 feet tall and fluctuating between 160 and 165 pounds. I used to be 140 and I’d love to get back to that, but I care more about being able to do any physical activity required of me. My biggest goal is to decrease my waist size back down and attain visible abs. Which program do you think would be best for me?

    1. Hi Jessica, Honestly, either program would help you reach your goals. In cases like this, I like to say if you want strength training and cardio, try P90C. If you would rather hardecore cardio/bodyweight only, then Insanity. Bethany

  3. Helloo Bethany ,
I’m 16 years old, height 5’2 and weigh 138 pounds. I want to lose about 15 pounds and get toned not super muscular. I would like to have a flat stomach and a firm butt and legs. I have 34.2% of body fat. I know that beach body doesn’t recommend these workouts for minors but I prefer exercising at home rather that at a gym.Which would you recommend

    1. Hi Sofia, Yes as a minor, you need to talk to your parents/guardians and consulting with a doctor would be best.

  4. Hey Bethany ,
I’m 18 years old, height 5’2 and weigh 151 pounds. I want to lose about 25 pounds and get toned not super muscular. I would like to have toned butt , legs and stomach. As for my arms, I would like a little definition of muscle because I have such flappy arms. Honestly I’m not much of a exercise person in general but I would like to make a change towards a healthier lifestyle. Which of the two programs do you recommend?

  5. Hi,
I used to play hardcore basketball, but I haven’t for more than a year. I got pudgy and want to regain my hollow cheeks and lean, skinny figure. I guess I want a “ballerina-ish” body. Not too muscular, but to where I look thin. I like p90x, the only problem is equipment. My dad used to do p90x and said that the workouts that included equipment could be substituted. Anyways, I would like your opinion.

    1. Hi Sussana, I think the minimal equipment you would need for P90X is a resistance band. Not sure you could really substitute the workouts that use equipment since that would be about half of the workouts.

  6. Hey Bethany!
Loved your article so much. It’s been so stressful trying to find a good workout that fits for women. I was always so intimidated by P90X, because even on their website – it looks like it gears more towards men.
I am 20 years old, 5’1″, and relatively new a healthy gym lifestyle. I used to dabble in sports in high school, but never had to stress too much about dieting and following a workout schedule. However, since college, I’ve gained a lot of weight and seen my naturally petite body get worse and worse. I was really hoping to get a bikini body and feel better about my health by the summer. In my experience at the gym, I tend to enjoy the actual machines more vs. cardio workouts – I absolutely hate running. What would you recommend?

    1. Ho Melissa, You can try them both with Beachbody on Demand to see which you like more, there is a link to trial in the article. Could also take a look at the BBL workout, I have reviewed it on my site also. Main thing is to find a program you like and are going to stick with.

  7. I am 37 years old, height 5’2, and weigh about 137. I’d like to lose about 20 more pounds and get tone, not muscular. Like to lift my flabby white girl booty and flatten stomach. I’ve recently started running and enjoy it and would like to step it all up to get in shape physically and mentally. What do you recommend insanity or p90x? I’m also single mom of 2.

    1. Hi Stephanie, Hmmm, while Insanity and P90X are both great programs, you can actually try them both with a trial to the Beachbody On Demand that I have linked to in the post. But, another program that you might want to look into is T25, there is the category drop down that you can look into this program more. I also have T25 / Running hybrid schedule that if use the search feature on this site you should be able to find that you might enjoy. Bethany

  8. I am currently doing insanity, started a couple of weeks ago. I am eating clean but not following the insanity diet. My goal is to lose weight especially in my belly area. I would also like to tone up and get abs once i reach my ideal weight. Any advice?

    1. Hi Tolu, Keep with! There is not much say, you’ll get results with dedication to your nutrition and workouts.

  9. I am 27years old. Two years ago I did P90X for a month and although I don’t have any weight problem, my muscles( especially leg muscles) grew a lot in volume. Now I’m thinking about starting Insanity, but I am afraid that it would do the same thing. Maybe I was doing something wrong? Can you give me any recommendation to improve muscle tone without gaining volume? Thanks

    1. Hi Maria, If by volume you mean larger muscles, P90X does use weight training for legs which in theory could have added some bulk to your legs. Insanity is all body weight and is pretty much strictly hardcore cardio, meaning people should not add a whole lot of muscle, rather cut and tone. If you were not doing so, be sure to measure as more muscular tone can appear bigger and in reality be smaller.

  10. ‘ Hi Bethany,

I am 35, 153 lb, 5’5″ ans size 14(wider mid-section). I have gained around 30 lbs during my twins pregnancy 4 years back. I have a wider mid-section(waist and tummy) and i don’t feel strength. I also needs to gain some muscles and endurance. I did JM and group exercise at local gym and lost 10-15 lb in 3 months but gained back in few months. I am looking for a program that will help in reducing my mid-section atleast to size6 and gain more muscles to have stronger body. Hoping to get some help from you.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Priya! I like Insanity better than P90X, but that is because I had a seriously tough time with P90X. With Insanity, I was able to tone it down to my fitness level more easily. It’s really up to you and your preference on what workout seems right for you (weights vs. body weight, equipment vs no equipment, Shaun T. vs Tony Horton, etc.), because either program will help you build endurance, lean muscle mass, and get you the body you want. Hope this helps! Bethany

  11. Hi Bethany,
    I am 49, 160 pounds and about 5’5”
I have got both Insanity and P90X programs.
My goal is to lose about 20 pounds for the beginning and then
see how I feel and maybe go for some few more pounds to lose.
I actually started already Insanity and doing it for four days,
During workout I stop some times, but keep going till the end.
Before that I was doing Cross Fit,
but had so little time, that I slept for about 5 or 5,5 hous a day.
So I decided that sleep is more important than Cross Fit and stoped going to the gym about two month ago.
I don’t feel good without exersising and gane some wait.
I feel great doing workouts, whether cardio or weight.
Someone told me, that Insanity is crazier and P90X is a bit slower.
My question is what would you suggest to continue with Insanity, even I am not able to keep up with all the workouts,
ot start on Monday, Febr, 1 with P90X and then continue with Insanity after 90 days?
    Please advise.
    Kindly,
    Lana

    1. Hi Lana, I would not say Insanity is harder than P90X, it is more cardiovascular of a program than P90X. P90X includes the weight training days, which can be just as intense, but different. If you have to rest during the Insanity workouts that is not a problem, most people need to take breaks.

      1. Hi Bethany,
thank you for your quick respond.
I actually did today both my Insanity Pure Cardio workout,
        as scheduled and
        did Fit Test for P90X.
I passed it and LOVED IT.
I think I will do one more Insanity workout to finish my week of Insanity
and will start P90X on Monday, Feb. 1 for 90 days
        and then will do Insanity.
I am feeling excited, happy and motivated.
If you want, I will keep you posted along the way.
        Lana

  12. Hi Bethany! My name is Taylor, I am about 5’5″ and I weigh around 152 pounds. I have completed both insanity and p90x over the past few years and I was wondering if you’ve heard of Kayla’s BBG workout. I am a vegan, so I was always unable to follow the meal plans for beachbody but I recently found a meal plan I can stick to. I’ve always struggled with my weight and my goal is to lose about 30 pounds. I am more of a weight lifter, but I also enjoy cardio. I am trying to decide whether to do Kayla’s or one of these programs.

    1. Hi Taylor, Just to note Beachboy’s newer programs, post Max:30 probably do account for and tell you ways to make the diet portion vegan and alternative diet friendly. Bethany

  13. Hi
I am 35 year old mother of five beautiful children. I have been athletic all my life and usually very active. Through some life changes and a new job I have now been nearly as physical as I like and it is really start to weigh me down both physically and mentally. After my last baby I lost all but 15 lbs then within the last year gained another 15 lbs and am wanting to loose 30 lbs as well as tone up and feel better overall. I am used to hard work and sweat and I am willing to put in what is necessary to make the changes. I am hoping you can give me some help because I am on the fence between P90X and Insanity. Thank you for any help that you can provide.

    1. Hi Christina, You could try the Beachbody On Demand this way you could get access to both workouts. There is a 30-day trial if you have not been a Beachbody Club member before. Bethany

  14. Hi Bethanny,
Thanks for this article very informative.
Back in June 2013 I embarked on my weightloss journey after 2 kids. By November 2014 I had lost 14kgs of the 18kgs I wanted to lose. I had lasted 9weeks of P90X. I’m not sure how much weight it helped me to lose.
So 1 year down the track Iv put on 1/2 of what I lost (due to poor eating/drinking and less exercise). I’m on week 2 of P90X but feel so run down. I enjoy weights but would probably prefer the cardio of insanity but at the same time am worried about the run down feeling.
Any tips on what you think I’d be better off doing (p90x or insanity) and do you encourage any supplements?

    1. Hi Netty, If you like P90X, Chalean Xtreme is similar but the workouts are much shorter, less than 50 minutes.IT is also on Beachbody On Demand if you want to take a look at the workouts. As far as supplements, it really depends not he individual, goals, and budget.I would avoid any sort of diet pill, but whey protein, a meal replacement shake could be things to look into. Bethany

  15. Hi Bethany,
I am 36 years old and I weigh 222 pounds. I’m 5.5 . I have struggled with my weight for 4 years now I am not very active I walk for my job all day but that’s about all the working out I do . I really need to take charge of my health and adopt and live a healthier and active lifestyle I have a little more then90 days to lose the weight, my husband will be deployed n
home in Feb . From your research and graph, I’m thinking that Insanity is my best bet for weight loss. However, I’ve heard that women should incorporate a lot more strength training in their workouts so, now I’m stuck between choosing one of the two. Also, as you can imagine, I need to lose a significant amount of weight for my height but I want to lose it gradually and healthy so that I can really stick to my new lifestyle and maintain an overall healthy weight. So, what do you think? Thanks for your input. Cheers!

    1. Hi Shannon, Strength training and cardio are both important. Insanity does not use weights, but you do use your body weight for resistance. No matter which you choose diet is going to be an important factor. Both of the programs are included in the new Beachbody On Demand area, if you wanted to sample both programs you could do that and see which you like more. Bethany

  16. Hi Bethany,

Thank you for putting all the information on this blog.

I ma 5’2″- 125 lbs. I am not looking to loose weight. My focus is to have a toned body -specifically toned abs and legs.

I am confused between Insanity an P90X.

    Can you please advise.

    Thank you
    Yas

    1. Hi Yas, Did you have any specific questions? You will tone up with either program, Insanity is more cardio while P90X mixes in three days of strength training with weights. Bethany

  17. Hi

I’ve completed both P90 X and Insanity with good results. However, last 6 months I fell out of shape and gained 28 lbs-bad diet, sitting down too much, and no working out. I need to re-boot and start over. I feel bulky because I was muscular and now it’s covered in fat. What do I do now? Insanity?

  18. Hi Bethany! This website has been super helpful so thank you for that! I’m 18 years old and a college freshman. I’ve never had weight issues until this past year. I had been able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want and not have to worry about a thing — and then I grew up. I gained around 20 pounds this past year and it’s seemed like no matter what cardio/ weight training I do, I can’t seem to lose the weight. I’m not overweight by any means, but I’m not happy with the way I look or feel whatsoever. I’ve also had a really hard time sticking to a good meal plan and staying motivated. As I said, I’m a college student so my time is limited as well. I was thinking of giving the Insanity a try, what do you think a good route for me would be? Thanks for all the help!

    1. Hi Dani, Insanity or you also may want to give a look at T25. This is another program from Shaun T, it is a good full body workout routine, plus the workouts all just 25 minutes, this might fit better into your schedule.

  19. sarah isis (@disisd)

have you done a p90x3 review? I’m doing 21dfix right now and thinking of doing the p90x3 later on. Thanks!

    1. Hi Sarah, No I have not done P90X3 workouts so I won’t review them until I have a chance to get into them. Looks better than the original though.

  20. Hi Bethany,

I had my second baby approximately ten (10) months ago after trying successfully at doing the Scarsdale Medical Diet I lost a significant amount of weight. Subsequent to that, I did the Insanity 60 Day Workout Programme and I am now back to my wedding day weight *dancing*.

My question is I am still plagued with the loose skin around the stomach area, I have started the Max 30 programme but do you think it’s enough or should something else be incorporated to assist with overall toning especially around the stomach area?

    Thanks for the review btw!!!

    1. Hi M, Time, working out and healthy eating will help the loose skin. I don’t think there is any special exercises you could do. Bethany
