INSANITY vs P90X: A Comparison for Women by a Woman

insanity-vs-p90x
A guide to choosing between two of the top at home workout programs of all time.

The question I kept on asking myself before trying to decide between the INSANITY and P90X workout programs was, “oh my gosh, when did I get so fat?!” I knew it made my heart race to walk up a few flights of stairs, but when did I gain nearly thirty pounds?!

Yes, I was over 150 lbs when I made the decision to get back in shape again, so I wouldn’t be self-conscious about getting in a bathing suit. This is when I began comparing INSANITY vs P90X. I saw enough of the infomercials on TV, so I was intrigued.

As a woman, my goals were to lose weight and tone up without getting a professional bodybuilder look. Unfortunately, most of the real reviews I was able to find online about either program were written by men. My problem with that was men lose fat quicker than women, and men tend to like different types of workouts than women.

Anyways, below is my comparison of the top two at-home workout programs from a woman’s perspective.

And this is post is a comparison with the original P90X, I’d suggest reading my P90X Generation Next review which came out in 2026 befroe deciding whihc program is the best for you.

The Two Key Differences Between INSANITY and P90X

If I were to answer the questions, “What is P90X?” and “What is INSANITY?” in one sentence answers, this is what I would say this:

INSANITY is a 60-day intense workout program that is primarily a weight loss program where the workouts are performed 6 times a week and are 30-45 minute in length.

P90X is a 90-day total body workout program that consists of weight training workouts, cardiovascular exercise, and Yoga to help you not only lose weight, but also build lean muscle.

Being an art major(grad), I have always found it easier to take in information when presented visually, so  I figured my chart comparing INSANITY vs P90X would be an easy way for you to see key differences between the programs and which is better at achieving which result:

What Are the P90X and INSANITY Workouts Like?

The INSANITY workout program is based on something known as “Max Interval Training”, which is long-bursts of full blown cardiovascular exercise followed by shorter and lower intensity intervals of cardiovascular exercise. All of the INSANITY workouts will get your heart rate up and leave you pretty much drenched in sweat.

P90X bases its workouts around a training principle known as “muscle confusion”. The theory behind this principle is that, when you change up exercise order, workout order and even your diet, you don’t allow the body enough time to adapt to the training. This keeps you always moving forward with your health and fitness and not plateauing.

How the Workouts are Different

INSANITY workouts are high-intensity cardiovacular workouts that are not dance orienteted. You will be left in a puddle of sweat after these workouts from the plyometric moves that they incorporate with other physically demanding body weight only movements. Insanity workouts are done 6 times a week with no weights.

P90X workouts are also done six times a week. The program features three days of weight training, a plyometric workout, Kenpo(kickboxing) workout, and sweat inducing Yoga workout. The workouts are cycled in three week phases so you will not get bored with the workouts.

How the Diets Differ

The INSANITY diet plan is an easy-to-follow diet where you eat 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. This diet is well-balanced and easy to stick with. Everything is detailed in the INSANITY diet plan, which includes a step-by-step guide to calculating your calories and a bunch of easy-to-follow recipes that won’t keep you in the kitchen all day.

The P90X diet is more complicated than the INSANITY diet. The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase nutrition plan. In phase 1 of the P90X diet, which is called the Fat-Shredder phase, you eat a diet high in protein, low in fat, and low in carbohydrates. During the first phase of the P90X diet, people often notice significant loss of energy from the lower carbohydrates, but also significant weight loss. The second phase of the P90X diet is called the Energy Booster and is similar to the Insanity diet of 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. The third phase of the P90X diet is called the Endurance Maximizer and is nicknamed an athletic diet for this reason: unless you have extremely low body-fat levels, you should avoid this phase of the diet entirely and stick to the Energy Booster phase or you’ll likely add unwanted body fat.

What Equipment You Need for P90X or INSANITY

p90x-and-insanity-equipment
At the minimum you would need a resistance band to do the P90X workouts. Insanity requires no equipment, it use only bodyweight based exercises.

What I like most about the INSANITY workout program is the fact that it requires no workout equipment. This means I can just move my coffee table to the side, throw in a DVD, and start working out it minutes. You may want to add a heart-rate monitor to your workouts to make sure you stay in your target heart range.

On the other end of the spectrum, P90X  requires lots of equipment if you want to get the most out of the program. While it is recommended you have at least resistance bands and a yoga mat to do P90X, you will really need a few more pieces of equipment. Pull-ups and chin-up variations are major exercises in P90X, which means you’ll need a chin-up bar, plus likely a chair to help give you a boost until you’re strong enough. You’ll also want dumbbells up to thirty pounds, push-up bars, a yoga block, and a heart rate monitor is always very handy to have. The only good thing is that weights up to thirty pounds, yoga mat and heart rate monitor are something you will always be able to use down the road, so think of them as more of an investment in your health overall.

P90X vs  INSANITY  – Which Program is Harder?

For one reason or another, people always want to know which program is harder when comparing Insanity to P9oX. I can tell you this: both programs are extremely difficult, and both programs if followed properly are extremely rewarding. They will whip you into shape in 60 or 90 days and start you on track to a new and healthier lifestyle. However after trying both programs, I believe INSANITY is the harder of the two programs if you were to go all out with either.

Price Point – Where to Get p90X or INSANITY for the Lowest Prices

The good news is you do not have to let price be the deciding factor when choosing between INSANITY and P90X. Why? Because they both cost the same!

The lowest price for INSANITY and P90X is $119.88 plus shipping. But, if you order through a Team Beachbody store, you get free bonus workouts that are not available anywhere else.

If you order P90X through the link below, you get two free bonus workouts: Fountain of Youth Yoga and Mammoth UML, which is an upper body workout. And, as of writing this, you will also receive P90X Plus (4 DVDs – 5 workouts) for free, which is a $130 value alone.

Ordering INSANITY through the link below will also get you a free bonus workout called the Fast and Furious workout. I love this workout, and the fact it is only 20-minutes long makes an awesome addition to my workout line-up…especially on those days when I am short on time.

P90X vs INSANITY Results

INSANITY and P90X will undoubtedly get you real results. Both programs will help you lose weight, tone-up, and improve your cardiovascular health.

  • For weight loss, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.
  • For toning up, I would give P90X five stars and INSANITY four stars.
  • For cardiovascular health, I would give INSANITY five stars and P90X four stars.

The Simple Way to Decide

If I had to put it into simplest terms, if you like weight training, lots of pull-ups and push-ups then P90X is for you. If you do not like weight training and love high-intensity cardio INSANITY is your better option.

  1. Hello,
My name is Kayla. I am 19 years old, weigh about 150, and am 5’4. I have been involved in sports my entire life, playing soccer, basketball, fast pitch, baseball, volleyball, and currently rugby. I have never been the “skinny” or “toned” girl. I really want to get into shape and boost my self esteem, I have had body issues since I was in 5th grade. I want to work towards a flat stomach and slimming my legs down and lose weight. I have been wanting to get one of these programs for a few years now but now I’m struggling on which program I should try, P90X or Insanity. I live in a dorm, as I am a freshman, and would like to do the workouts in my room. Your recommendation would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! (:

    1. Hi Kayla, P90x would be very difficult to do effectively in a dorm room. Insanity is all bodyweight and you don’t need much space, maybe a six by six foot area, so that is what I would suggest.

  2. Hello!! I am 18 and i used to be a competitive gymnast for about 10 years. When I quit (which was about 3 years ago) I stopped working out completely. I have always wanted to get back into the shape I used to be in but I never really had the drive until now. I’ve tried the gym thing and working out in front of other people and machines aren’t really my thing. My main focus is gaining back my strength, but I also want to increase flexibility and endurance. I want something that I can continue using past the 60 or 90 day mark. Also, because I am in college, I don’t really have a lot of space to use…are both P90X and Insanity capable of being used in smaller spaces? (typical dorm room size) Thanks!!

    1. Hi Sam, P90X would be very difficult to do in a dorm. Isanity you need, I would say about a six by six space and some head room. Bethany

  3. Hi Bethany!

Firstly, thank you so much for providing this wonderful comparison!
I’m a ballet dancer and am hoping to lose some weight as I’m still carrying a few extra pounds. My main concern with either of the two is bulking up and getting unnecessarily tight muscles. As a student I don’t have a particularly large amount of time but am definitely ready to commit! In order to lose weigh and become leaner without bulking up which would be the better of the two for me? Thanks so much once again!

    1. Hi Natali, I would take a look at the PiYo program, it is to build long lean muscle, which it sounds like you want. In the category drop down on the sidebar of this site, you can find all of the articles I have written about it. Bethany

  4. First of all you are Awesome for help so many people! I am 28 years old, I am about 120 pounds. I want to become more tone as well as buff! I also want to lose weight. PX903 or Insanity?

  5. Hello.. im currently 16 years old and im 5’7 and 170lbs I used to be in athletics. I just recently quit because it was too time consuming. I just want to have a toned flat stomach.. Which program would you recommend for me?.. thank you for your time

  6. Hello! Happy to have found your extremely informative site. I am 47 and have lost almost 70 lbs since April 2014 through regular exercise and healthy eating. Now I am 5’4″ and weigh 185. I have 40 left to lose. I am quite motivated and get at least 30 mins cardio in 7 days a week and at least 2 days of some strength training. I have noticed it is getting harder to see results. I’ve looked at both P90X and Insanity, as well as the 21 day fix. I do not want to get bored! What program would you recommend for me? I am really wanting to see dramatic results by my next birthday in June. I enjoy both the strength training and the cardio-anything that makes me really sweat! I would like to lose fat, continue to build lean muscle, and gain more flexibility. Thanks in advance for your time!

    1. Hello Desiree! Congratulations on your weight loss so far – that is really terrific! I think the 21 Day Fix would be a great program for you. It incorporates an easy-to-follow diet plan and has all the cardio, yoga, and strength training that you love and are looking for. And…it will make you sweat. If you’d like to read more about the 21 Day Fix, make sure to visit my review page here. Hope this helps, and keep up the good work! Bethany

  7. I’m glad I came across your article comparing these from a women’s point of view.
I’ve been looking into trying one of these workouts and I’m not sure if one (or either) would be a good fit. I would to drop about 10 lbs to be back to my pre-children weight.

I have a history of playing sport through my 20s where I did a lot of endurance and strength training (rugby). Then since having kids, I have been playing rec league soccer in summers and belly dancing year round.

I’m trying to find a workout that will help me tone around my middle without so much cardio that I reduce my chest size. I had already dropped from a C cup to B cup from having kids and then I trained twice for marathons (half and full) in the past few years and every time I increased my cardio to that level I lose so much fat that I’m down to an A cup. I’m trying to find a work out that will be enough cardio and toning work to lose my middle without losing all my fat everywhere.

Would either one of these workouts be a better fit for trying to target mostly losing/toning in the middle section? And overall toning besides.

  8. I am currently on day five of insanity let me just say I did not do anything before this I just sat on a couch watching tv I’m 5 ft 4 in tall and weigh 186 lbs I am absolutely loving the intensity of these workouts I love being drenched in sweat after each workout is great and the shaky feelings my muscles have after each workout is awesome lol I’m hoping to lose at least 30 pounds without changing my eating habits wish me luck

  9. Hi Bethany! I am 19 years old and 5’3″. I have never been an athletic person or have done any kind of exercise yet I have always been slim. But recently i have been noticing gain in weight (skinny fat), especially in my midsection and arms. I want to tone up my whole body and be in more shape also with losing fat in my midsection. i also want to have more muscles in my lower body or to get them bigger/thicker without. I’m debating on p90x and insanity. I just don’t know which program is better for me. please help.

    1. Hi Kiabeth, It depends on what type of exercise you like. There are a few reviews that you can take a look at on this site.

  10. Hi, I am 27 years old. I have a baby 7 month ago. I am 124 libs and 5,5. I do not want to lose weight want to gain muscle mass. Also have problems with cellulite.

Any recommendations based on this information?

    1. Hi Fabiane, Body Beast is the at home workout program that you will want to take a look at for building muscle mass. Cellulite is another problem in it’s own, I do have a couple articles on this site that discuss the problem, if you use the search bar, you should find some helpful information. Bethany

  11. Hi Bethany,

I’m 28, 5’7″ and 197 pounds. In high school and college I was extremely active. I ran, played sports, and did crew. I had always been solidly built, ranging from 135 – 145 until during my pregnancy I ballooned over 200. I still play sports, attempt to run, and have tried various diets but can’t lose much. I worked with a trainer once and got down to 171, but I couldn’t afford to keep that up, and have gone up, up, down, up, up, down ever since. Can you recommend a program? P90x, Insanity, or anything else? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Mindy, May I suggest taking a look at the 21 Day Fix program, there is a review on this site. Getting your diet down will help with the ups and downs, plus it will get you in the habit of daily exercise. Bethany

  12. Hi there,

I am 31, 5’3″ and about 120 pounds. I am pretty content with my weight- maybe wouldn’t mind losing a small amount of weight, but my main goal is to gain muscle and tone. I am thin but very out of shape both cardiovascular wise and very “flabby.” If something is extremely difficult or takes forever, I tend to lose motivation. I already eat very strict paleo with no added fruit except a handful of berries a day and will need to continue with this same diet due to health issues (autoimmune issues).

Any recommendations based on this information?

    1. Hi Kellie, I would not recommend either one these programs to you. Both programs are extremely intense and take a lot of effort. Plus, it sounds like you are looking to tone more than lose weight. I would suggest taking a look at Brazil Butt Lift or the PiYo workout, you can find revies of both on this site. Bethany

  13. Hi, Bethany. I am 18 years old and i’m 5’7. I started a culinary program at school this year and I noticed that I’m gaining weight i’m at 160 now and I would really like to go down about 20-30 pounds and start college later this coming year with a really healthy and fit lifestyle. I have p90x but I haven’t tried using the program yet. Would you recommend it? I’d love to just be toned, healthy, and hopefully stress free after this journey. P.S. I also want to look good in my dress for prom in early May! Please help!

    1. Hi Quin! Congratulations on the decision to get fit. The good news is that you’ve decided to take the first step in trying to figure out how to live a healthier lifestyle. That is HUGE and farther than some people will ever make it, so good for you!

If you already have P90X and free weights or resistance bands to use for all the resistance training in P90X, I would definitely just follow that program. It’s a great workout that will get you lean and mean in time for May. The only thing about P90X I wouldn’t follow 100% is the diet plan. I would stick to phase I and phase II – you will never need to follow the super-high carb intake in phase III unless your body fat has gone down low enough that you’d be considered an athlete with how little body fat you have, which isn’t going to happen exercising for one hour every day.

Just remember to always be mindful and listen to your body, and do the workouts at your own pace. While you should push yourself each and every workout, don’t injure yourself by pushing beyond your limits. Good luck! P90X will definitely get you toned, healthy and feeling better overall. I hope this helps, but if you do have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Take care – Bethany

  14. Hi Bethany,
Thanks for writing this informative article. After reading both your article and reviewing YouTube videos, I’m leaning towards Insanity. However, my final decision will be based on how you answer this question: which program works best on carpeted floor?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Crystal, I would definitely go with Insanity – it works awesome on carpeted floors. The weights with P90X can be a litty iffy. Hope this helps! Bethany

  15. Hey. I am 27 years old I have been doing the gym thing for about 4 months now. I have lost 13 pounds and 4% body fat. I am trying to get in the military. I have around 20 pounds to go. I started at 180 and am now 167. I am trying to figure out how to lose the weight faster I am dieting and everything like I should. Any advice?

    1. Hi Stacey, for those going into the military, I think P90X is the better option. Congrats on the weight loss so far, you will get there. -Bethany

  16. So both my mom and I are looking to lose weight. Both of us are over weight and unhappy with the way our bodies are. I am 18 and she is 50. I used insanity as part of conditioning for high school basketball and was in love with it. We only did it for about a month 1 day a week. Both of us are looking to shred weight and build muscle and follow a diet plan. I am torn on which one we should be doing. We’ve been unhappy for too long and we are ready to change our lives. (:

  17. Hi Bethany! I’m 17 years old and I will be 18 in a little over a month. I’m 6’0 feet tall and currently 178.8 pounds. I play basketball and basically year round. The thing is I don’t look this weight at all. When I weighed myself the other day I got really discouraged and I want to lose 30 pounds or get to 140. The weight is mainly in my tummy. I don’t know if it’s some of the muscle I have or what but I don’t like me at this weight. I want to still have a butt tho lol( or bigger) Which do you prefer I should get? A friend said I should try t25 but I don’t know. I would like to lose this weight by February if possible. Thanks!

    1. Hi Ida, I know it sounds petty, but these programs are for those 18 years old and older. And, I cannot give advice to those under 18 years of age. Sorry. -Bethany

  18. Hi! I’m 25 yrs old 5’6 150lbs. I’m wanting to lose about 20 ponds. I have both Insanity and P90X. Even though I did get good results with insanity about a year ago I gained everything I lost back and some. I really enjoy lifting weights better then I do cardio. Would P90X be good for me to lose the weight I want and get lean muscle or should I just do Insanity to lose the weight I’m wanting to?

    1. Hi Jackie, If you like lifting weights do P90X, P90X will have a weight loss effect too. Plus you might build a little more muscle. Bethany

  19. Hey! I’m 15 and want to get in shape while I’m still young. I weigh 165-170 and am around 5’4″. I want to end up weighing around 120. I have the equipment to do p90x and own both of them. I’ve tried p90x before and always quit out of a lack of motivation. What do you think I should do?

  20. Hello Bethany thank you posting this article as I’m struggling on which one to get. I’m a 38 mother of 4 two grown babies and my 19 month old twins, I gained so much weight with my twins I was up to almost 160 after I had them I lost the baby weight and I was 135 but I got the baby blues and I shot right back up to about no less then 157, In June i decided to start taking care of my self and make a change, I started the Jillian Michaels body revolution workout videos 5 to 6 days a week I do watch what I eat something I had never done before, I’m now down to 128 oh yeah and I’m 5 feet tall lol, I want to still loose lots of fat but also want to build muscle I love to run I hopes in one day to do marathon.. which would be better? Or would both be good to switch from day to day? Thank you in advance… ;)

    1. Hi Ofelia, eihter program would help you reach your goals. It is not a good idea to switch day to day as the programs are designed to be followed alone. There are hybrid schedules of the two programs that you can look into, but these are more for advanced and not suited for beginners. Soundd like P90X might be the better program gour you at this point or have a look at the new P90 program, I;ll be writing a review in the future. Bethany
