The question I kept on asking myself before trying to decide between the INSANITY and P90X workout programs was, “oh my gosh, when did I get so fat?!” I knew it made my heart race to walk up a few flights of stairs, but when did I gain nearly thirty pounds?!
Yes, I was over 150 lbs when I made the decision to get back in shape again, so I wouldn’t be self-conscious about getting in a bathing suit. This is when I began comparing INSANITY vs P90X. I saw enough of the infomercials on TV, so I was intrigued.
As a woman, my goals were to lose weight and tone up without getting a professional bodybuilder look. Unfortunately, most of the real reviews I was able to find online about either program were written by men. My problem with that was men lose fat quicker than women, and men tend to like different types of workouts than women.
Anyways, below is my comparison of the top two at-home workout programs from a woman’s perspective.
And this is post is a comparison with the original P90X, I’d suggest reading my P90X Generation Next review which came out in 2026 befroe deciding whihc program is the best for you.
The Two Key Differences Between INSANITY and P90X
If I were to answer the questions, “What is P90X?” and “What is INSANITY?” in one sentence answers, this is what I would say this:
INSANITY is a 60-day intense workout program that is primarily a weight loss program where the workouts are performed 6 times a week and are 30-45 minute in length.
P90X is a 90-day total body workout program that consists of weight training workouts, cardiovascular exercise, and Yoga to help you not only lose weight, but also build lean muscle.

What Are the P90X and INSANITY Workouts Like?
The INSANITY workout program is based on something known as “Max Interval Training”, which is long-bursts of full blown cardiovascular exercise followed by shorter and lower intensity intervals of cardiovascular exercise. All of the INSANITY workouts will get your heart rate up and leave you pretty much drenched in sweat.
P90X bases its workouts around a training principle known as “muscle confusion”. The theory behind this principle is that, when you change up exercise order, workout order and even your diet, you don’t allow the body enough time to adapt to the training. This keeps you always moving forward with your health and fitness and not plateauing.
How the Workouts are Different
INSANITY workouts are high-intensity cardiovacular workouts that are not dance orienteted. You will be left in a puddle of sweat after these workouts from the plyometric moves that they incorporate with other physically demanding body weight only movements. Insanity workouts are done 6 times a week with no weights.
P90X workouts are also done six times a week. The program features three days of weight training, a plyometric workout, Kenpo(kickboxing) workout, and sweat inducing Yoga workout. The workouts are cycled in three week phases so you will not get bored with the workouts.
How the Diets Differ
The INSANITY diet plan is an easy-to-follow diet where you eat 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. This diet is well-balanced and easy to stick with. Everything is detailed in the INSANITY diet plan, which includes a step-by-step guide to calculating your calories and a bunch of easy-to-follow recipes that won’t keep you in the kitchen all day.
The P90X diet is more complicated than the INSANITY diet. The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase nutrition plan. In phase 1 of the P90X diet, which is called the Fat-Shredder phase, you eat a diet high in protein, low in fat, and low in carbohydrates. During the first phase of the P90X diet, people often notice significant loss of energy from the lower carbohydrates, but also significant weight loss. The second phase of the P90X diet is called the Energy Booster and is similar to the Insanity diet of 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. The third phase of the P90X diet is called the Endurance Maximizer and is nicknamed an athletic diet for this reason: unless you have extremely low body-fat levels, you should avoid this phase of the diet entirely and stick to the Energy Booster phase or you’ll likely add unwanted body fat.
What Equipment You Need for P90X or INSANITY

What I like most about the INSANITY workout program is the fact that it requires no workout equipment. This means I can just move my coffee table to the side, throw in a DVD, and start working out it minutes. You may want to add a heart-rate monitor to your workouts to make sure you stay in your target heart range.
On the other end of the spectrum, P90X requires lots of equipment if you want to get the most out of the program. While it is recommended you have at least resistance bands and a yoga mat to do P90X, you will really need a few more pieces of equipment. Pull-ups and chin-up variations are major exercises in P90X, which means you’ll need a chin-up bar, plus likely a chair to help give you a boost until you’re strong enough. You’ll also want dumbbells up to thirty pounds, push-up bars, a yoga block, and a heart rate monitor is always very handy to have. The only good thing is that weights up to thirty pounds, yoga mat and heart rate monitor are something you will always be able to use down the road, so think of them as more of an investment in your health overall.
P90X vs INSANITY – Which Program is Harder?
For one reason or another, people always want to know which program is harder when comparing Insanity to P9oX. I can tell you this: both programs are extremely difficult, and both programs if followed properly are extremely rewarding. They will whip you into shape in 60 or 90 days and start you on track to a new and healthier lifestyle. However after trying both programs, I believe INSANITY is the harder of the two programs if you were to go all out with either.

I’m at the time in my life where I am really motivated to become as fit and healthy as possible. As someone who still struggles with BED I am ready to make some changes and nourish my body (and mind) in a healthy way. I am 34 years old and I weigh 285 pounds. I’m 5.4 and 3/4 tall. I have struggled with my weight since senior year in H.S. I really need to take charge of my health and adopt and live a healthier and active lifestyle. From your research and graph, I’m thinking that Insanity is my best bet for weight loss. Hello, Awesome that you have made the decision to change! Both of these programs are more geared towards the intermediates/advanced trainers. You might want to look at more of a beginner program like the 21 Day Fix. It is well rounded program that includes cardiovascular workouts and also uses weights for strength training too. I managed to get down to 173 about a year and a half ago and was seeing some great results toning as well until planter fasciitis took me away from running last August. HI Kim, It depends on the planter fasciitis. You may want to look at lower impact workout like PiYo just to get back into to it. These two programs are very difficult to begin and there are better options like T25 or Power 90. Bethany

Hey Bethany I used to workout before I loved spinning class but work schedule was hard to keep gym routine. I’ve gained few pounds need to lose 15 pounds!! Am also very active!! I’m currently on week 5 of P90x lean routine, and I’m seeing great toning, but still feel like I have a bit of extra weight to lose (probably 10 pounds). I’m planning to stricter with diet. I’m wondering if being stricter with the diet should help me lose the weight in the next 10 weeks, or if I should switch to T25. Before I started P90x I’d done boxing off and on for a year, and little exercise before that.
I’m getting married in 10 weeks, so my goal is to lose the weight by then. I’m 5’7, and about 130 pounds right now. I can email over a pic of myself if that’ll help you determine more about my body type!

Hi Sara, Just get strict with your diet. Creating a calorie deficit of 500 calories a day will get you down to 120 in 10 weeks. Bethany
Hi! Thankmyounfor this article! I have a question. I have been doing mostly Insanitynfor almost two years now. I have done an p90x/Insanity hybrid a couple of times, also. However, when I first started Insanity I went from 130 to 116 in about 4 months. I am 5’2″. I gained back up to 130 somewhere along the way. I have started Tae Kwon Do 3-4 nights a week, and feel like I still need to do Insaity to make it through those classes. However, I would like to lose back down to below 120. Is that possible with this schedule, and should I be doing more p90x instead of Insanity? My diet hasn’t been the best, but feel like if I don’t eat enough, I have no energy.

Hi I am 33 and mother of 4 with a post-baby body that needs toning. My weight/BMI/body fat is in the normal range for my age and height. I started doing HIIT and Tabata workouts about 2 months ago (at gym and fitnessblender.com) 30-60 mins daily 5-6 days per week. I usually do pilates/yoga once per week. 2 weeks ago I restarted weight training 2x per week at gym with my husband (who really pushes me.) I have noticed my quads and glutes become larger and more toned – I’ve always had more of the long/lean muscle tone – so that has been a body image adjustment. I was considering the Insanity series and continuing the weight training at the gym. Would love to know your thoughts?? Thanks
Hi Sarah, If you follow any of the Insanity programs as laid out you don’t need the weight training too. That would probably be to much intense exercise. I definitely put on muscle with MAC:30 and did not even touch a weight. Bethany

I have already tied insanity for 30 days but I wasn’t eating right. On the bright side, I started to see my first ever 2 pack abs, I could feel them and they were shaped, but not exactly visible yet. I was also able to complete my first ever 30 day workout goal (I am known to be pretty athletic around school and in my family, but I have a few kilos that are hiding and need to be shed. I also have tried insanity before and Jillian Michaels’ workout before and Brazil Butt Lift, and a bunch more workouts… but I never make it to 30 days. I can lose motivation 2 days before the 30th) Anyway, on the dark side I wasn’t eating to plan and so didn’t lose a single pound (just toning).
Now for my decision, I was wondering if I should try insanity again but follow the plans fully, or try P90X for a change. The thing is, I really want to be able to do a pull up (at least one!) and I also want the body toning, you are probably saying that I should try P90X. I would, but the program is too long and I don’t have that time on my hands… You know getting ready for summer and going on a vacation. So I was wondering if I tried Insanity again and followed correctly, would I be able to get the same results? Oh and I should also mention my weight, height, and age… I am 158 cm tall and 74-75 kilos (I should be 58-60). The best thing about my body is no one ever knows I weigh that much, I look like a 65 (my body managed to spread the fat all around my body, especially my arms and my thighs). So what do you recommend?

I had an ACL reconstructive surgery last July on my knee, but I guess insanity is fine when I do its workouts except for the power jumps, I take precaution. So I was wondering if P90X has moves that would greatly affect my knee.
Hi Khadija, P90X is easier on the knees in my opinion than Insanity. If you don’t have the time check out P90X3. Just be sure to get cleared by your doctor, so you knee your knee will be okay. Bethany

Hi. This is a great article. I am a 43 year old mom of four kids ranging from 15 years to 1 year old. I just finished week 3 of T 25 beta. I really like the t25 program and plan to continue with Gamma. I have lost 12.8 pounds. I am also doing weight watchers online to help with food accountability.
As you can imagine with four kids time is a big issue. I used to train with weights consistently and was most happy with my body at this point in my life. I did indoor cycling at the same time.
I am still confused as to whether I should move to P90x or go to insanity. I still have a little over 20 pounds I would like to lose. P90x concerns me because I have shoulder problems and cannot do military style push-ups or even do a full girly push up and a pull up is probably going to wreck my shoulders. Can I do something instead of pull ups when that is the focus in p90x?

Hi Cori, There are lots of pull-ups, I mean lots in P90X. There is the option to use the band for a similar movement. I don’t recommend P90X to many people, an hour and a half of working out daily is over the top. Have you checked out INSANITY MAX:30, the workouts are only thirty minutes and the modifier makes it to me a better option than the original Insanity. Bethany

I am training for a half-marathon and run 3-4 nights a week, usually about 8 miles at a time and sometimes a long weekend run. I just started Insanity…I lost about 30 pounds (5’4″ and went from 161 to 128). I’m fairly happy with my body now, but I’d like to add some definition.
How much should I cut back on my running so I’m not overdoing it?

I’m 32, about 5’9 and around 185. I stopped excercising about a year ago and when I tried going back to the gym on July I got an achilles tendon rupture at the end of a kickboxing class :(
The doctor just released me from therapy but recommended to stick with low impact and no contact excercises or sports. Which program(s) would you recommend for me?

Hi Nicole, The best program is one that you are going to find more enjoyable. As long as you lose 1-2 pounds a week, which is the optimal amount for everyone, you should minimize or not have any loose skin issues, that comes down to a lot to genetics and age. Bethany
I have been into heavy lifting for a very long time. I want to try something different though because I’ve never been much for the cardio side and I’ve hit a plateau where I’m not seeing any more results.
