All Your PiYo Workout FAQs Answered

Have a question about the PiYo at home workout program? Find your answer below.

This FAQ post is geared towards the PiYo at-home workout program created by Chalene Johnson and brought to you by Beachbody.

Q: Is PiYo an at-home workout or an in-studio workout?

A: It’s both! PiYo workouts have been offered in fitness studios settings for years.  In June 2014, Chalene Johnson and Beachbody decided to take this found-only-in-studio workout and created an at-home workout series. The in-studio version of the PiYo workout is called PiYo Live.

Q: What is the difference between PiYo Basic and PiYo Strength?

A: Once you get your at-home workout program, you have two options to choose from: PiYo Base and PiYo Deluxe. PiYo Base is the basic PiYo workout program that you can do if you ordered the basic program without the yoga mat and sliders. The PiYo Deluxe package includes two advanced PiYo workouts, yoga mat and sliders. In these two extra workouts, you use the Beachbody Strength slides to increase the intensity – it’s like having a personal trainer in your own home to keep you in proper form. You can compare the two workout calendars here.

Q: How long are the PiYo workouts?

A: They vary, but here’s the breakdown:

Basic Workouts:

  • Align: The Fundamentals(40 min.)
  • Define: Lower Body (20 min.)
  • Define: Upper Body (20 min.)
  • Sweat (35 min.), Core (30 min.)
  • Strength Intervals (25 min.)
  • Drench (45 min.)
  • Sculpt (30 min.)
  • Buns (25 min.)

Bonus Workout: Hardcore on the Floor (30 min), which is FREE as long as you order it through a Team Beachbody coach.

The Strength workout calendar includes all the Basic calendar workouts plus the following:

  • Full Body Blast (30 min.)
  • Strong Legs (30 min.)

Q: What equipment do you need for PiYo?

A: For the basic program, all you need is a yoga mat and a towel to wipe the sweat out of your eyes. For PiYo Strength calendar, you will need the Beachbody Strength Slides that come with the deluxe package.

Q: What kind of shape do I need to be in do PiYO?

A: Injury-free is the only criteria to do this program, because PiYo is for the beginner through the advanced. There is always a modifier on screen for the beginner and if you can’t keep with her endurance-wise, simply go into child’s pose. It is also advanced enough for the exercise enthusiast, because it will pose new challenges for your body.

Q: What kind of results will I get with PiYo?

A: Four weeks in, I lost about 6 pounds ( and I really didn’t have much to lose), I see muscles in my core that I did not know existed. My boyfriend has lost over ten pounds and is at his lowest body weight in over ten years. He also made the comment how much easier yardwork has been, although I think he should be careful bragging about that one :) The results you will get with PiYo: weight loss, toning, increased flexibility, and a noticeable increase in cardiovascular endurance.

Q: Will I need to add extra cardio workouts to PiYo?

A: Not in my opinion. Chalene has added in a good mix of cardio to make sure the workouts get your heartrate up. Plus, the dynamic moves in PiYo feel like a cardio workout in their own.

Q: What is the PiYo GET LEAN eating plan like?

A: The GET LEAN eating plan is simple to follow first and foremost. It is a well-balanced diet with a focus on whole foods. It offers daily ratios of about 40% carbs, 35% protein, and 25% fat, which is what you really should be eating for good health. The diet guide provides a list of foods in different categories. You simply select your calorie range and then get a certain amount of blocks to eat from each category, like proteins, fruits, veggies, carbs, and healthy fats.

Q: What to wear during PiYo?

A: Whatever you are most comfortable in. Most workouts do not require sneakers, but it would be a good idea to wear them for Buns, Strength Intervals, and the Deluxe workouts.

Q: How many calories do PiYo workouts burn?

A: The amount of calories you burn in PiYo depends upon many factors. For most people, 250 to 400 calories would be about the average.

Q: Who created PiYo?

A: Chalene Johnson. In her words, she created PiYo because she wanted a workout that would create results for anyone regardless of their age or fitness level could do. She also wanted to increase her own flexibility.

Q: What are the benefits of PiYo workouts?

A: PiYo incorporates muscle sculpting bodyweight exercises and Pilates moves with the flexibility training of Yoga and low impact fluid movements to burn calories. In the end, you get a workout that will make you stronger, leaner, and more flexible.

Q: Where can I buy PiYo?

A: The PiYo at home workout program is not available in stores. It must be purchased through Beachbody or Team Beachbody. Ordering PiYo from a Team Beachbody link gets you the Hardcore on the Floor workout for FREE and as an added benefit if you order though this link, I will be made your PiYo coach! :)

  1. I am going to a conference and will miss a couple of days. What can I do in its place till I get home.

  2. Thank you Bethany……… always nice to hear a bit of advice.

I was looking at the other PiYo programmes on your website……. i don’t think i have seen these ?? Ops.. am i missing something ??? sorry to ask??

    Grace

  3. Hi Bethany

I have started doing piyo 4 days ago….. i am starting on the first dvd (so month 1), do you think i could go straight to month 2?? the reason for my packing is I’ve spent months doing insanity and i feel that the month 2 offers a better range?

I was just wondering if you had any advice..

    Grace

    1. Hi Grace, I would skip to week 3 of the PiYo program this is when it really picks up the intensity.

  4. I see that you said “injury free”. I have had back surgery in the past and don’t have many problems with my back now. But I do have a hard time doing things that require you to lean forward a little – such as bowling, etc. I can lean forward if I support myself – like if I bend forward to take something out of the oven I have to support myself with one hand or squat down so I’m not leaning. Do you think with the modified version I would be OK doing this workout?

    1. Hi Julie, Definitely best to be cleared by a doctor before beginning. It would be very hard for me to say and I don’t want to get you injured.

    1. Hi Gabby, One side(blue) is the basic schedule. The strength(pink) side is the schedule that incorporates the slider workouts.

      1. Hi Skie, I have a spreadsheets and pdfs, if you go to the PiYo category in the sidebar you should be able to find everything.

  5. Are there a lot of “on the floor movements with this program? I am 73 yr. old, very active, but have difficulty getting up after floor movements. I have cardiac endurance, and am reasonably flexible ( I do water exercises).

    1. Hi Irma, There are a lot positions that require your hands to be placed on the ground, down dogs and the such. There is always the modifier to fall back on, most moves she does not go to the floor on. Bethany

    1. Hi Suzi. You don’t need a lot of room for PiYo, maybe the length of a Yoga mat and the same width wise plus a couple feet to be comfortable. Bethany

  6. thanks for this review. i’m in my late 50’s and am in decent shape due to strength training 2 times a week and one fitness class a week but i want to lose about 10 lbs and get a bit leaner. I was looking for a low impact workout and ordered it yesterday. after reading your review, i’m really glad i did now.

  7. I am 4 months away from 66. I have always been an active person and have battled my weight since I was 40. I realize there are alternatives to some moves. Will I still get the same results if I am never able to progress to all of the moves as they should be. My body does not match up with my mind and goals I would like to reach.

    1. Hi Kathy, I would recommend just doing your best, if you can’t do all the moves 100% it’s not a big deal, I don’t think I could do all of the moves in the workouts wither. As long as you are improving you are getting better and will get great results no matter what.

    1. Hi Cathy, It depedns, one side is the PiYo strength calendar the other is the basic calendar. If you have the sliders those go with the strength calendar, but you could follow the basic workout too.

  8. Hi! I just did the define lower body and upper body workouts and my fitbit charge HR says I only burned 86 calories. A little discouraging.

    1. Hi Kristen, I’m sure those two are going to be the lowest. I just picked up a polar heart rate monitor and will be testing the PiYo workouts soon. BEthany

  9. If I were to order from you would I still get the extra workout? I saw that the post is really old so I better ask, otherwise I would just order this off the website!

    1. Hi Kristine, not sure exactly what you mean, but yes the links on this site bring you to the website to order with the added bonus workout. Bethany

  10. Hi Bethany! I’ve started the Piyo workout.. I was wondering did you stared the basic or the strength first or it doesn’t really matter. Will I get the same result with both? I’m trying to lose weigh and tone my body.

    1. Hi Fatima, I followed the strength schedule Results will vary by individual and their devotion to the program, so that is a very hard question for me to answer. Bethany

  11. I’m in week 4 of PiYo. I’m still not certain how to determine my calories burned. I use myfitness pal to track exercise and calories. What is the best way to be as close to accurate as possible? Do I enter it as yoga?

My current weight is 118 lbs.

    1. Hi Dawn, The best way would be a fitbit or similar. I’m going to be getting one soon and will record how many calories each workout burns. Bethany

      1. I am very interested in the fitbit counts as well. I have a fitbit Charge but the HR was sold out in my area also. I also heard the HR is way off from measurements given with chest straps. Please update us when you know something more about the calories. Thanks!

  12. The diet seems pretty similar to 21 Day Fix. If I decide to do Pito are they compatible? 21 Day Fix really works for me and my husband and I hate to fix what’s not broken

    1. Hi Olgao, Yes, you can use the 21 Day Fix portion control eating plan with PiYo. The diets are nearly identical. Gald to hear you and your husband are enjoying the fix. Bethany

  13. Hello! Do I really need the sliders? Can I get away with socks on the carpet? Or a towel on hardwood? when I did brazillian butt lift (specifically the secret weapon CD) there was some sliding lunge exercises and I did them on the carpet in my socks. (which was actually suggested.)

Anyways….It would be nice to save the additional $30.00 if I can get away with no sliders.

    Thoughts?!
    Thanks!
    -Sam

    1. Hi Samantha, The moves in the PiYo deluxe workouts are much different than BBL secret weapon. I don’t think socks would work either. With that said, you could try paper plates.

      1. Oh great! Okay, I’m going to try that. If worse comes to worse then I can just buy them after the fact.
        Thanks so much!

  14. Hi I just started doing the Piyo workouts and I know from yoga that you should not shower after doing yoga. Should I keep doing that?

    1. Hi Christina, I think showering after would be okay, you are not doing any real meditation in the PiYo workouts. Bethany
